Rating: Summary: Another MOHAA sequel while we're waiting for "Call of Duty" Review: MOHAA Breakthrough is the second ad-on (after Spearhead) of the acclaimed MOHAA. This 3rd episode also ranked 3rd in terms of game play and overall fun. This episode contains 11 single-player levels and 9 new multiplayer maps. Obviously you will be taken in new locations like the battle of Kassemire Pass (North Africa), Messina (Sicily) or Monte Battaglia (Italy). The game also displays new weapons (who really care as they are not that new) and new soldiers (who really care as they are not that intelligent). The single-player mode is quite frankly disappointing as it is pretty much run and shoot all the way. The only good thing (not redeeming thing) is that the programmers alternate within the same mission FPS on foot and FPS in a vehicle (and that's great)...The multiplayer mode is the reason why (if any) you want MOHAA Breakthrough, the maps are very well done and new plus you get an additional mode, the "liberation" mode, where player can be captured and liberated (and that is a big plus). Overall you still have the MOHAA feel but let's face it EA is cashing on sequels that are very much minimalist...It's your call if you want them to do so...
Rating: Summary: intolerable Review: The mappers ABUSE spawning waves of germans that rush you 'technique' a lot. the A.I. has not been changed. a few levels are incredibly fun, with a lot of frustrating repetition in between the enjoyable moments. also, (get this) apparently less interactivity is a good thing. in the first PC version of MOH, Allied Assault, ammunition and health dropped by enemies would disappear over time, which is not realistic at all. dropped items stay on the ground. In Breakthrough, your enemies often drop nothing at all. also, enemies spawn in increidbly unlikely places, at extremely predictable intervals. how predictable? turn your back, and they spawn. clear an area, and enemies spawn everywhere after you trigger an event later.the touted leaving vehicles at will is nothing of the sort. you don't get to jump in any vehicle you see, only when the mappers think you should. and medal of honor should never be described by other means. you still spend your time running between fighting units. therefore, you never really see any plausible historically based action, just a lot of events related to the war strung together with a lot of unneringly accurate germans in front of you, no backup behind you, and little ammo. i don't want to listen to the stupid O.S.S. or run errands for some colonel. i want to see some historically based missions! and i mean that. i want to go into a town with a lot of infantry and tanks and fight street by street. i do not want to take a jeep and go roaming around the countryside taking out tanks with a light machinegun or something else implausible like that. the fogging/pop off has seemingly been shortened. on my nVidia chipset based computers the fogging is on by default. i have to change it via command line to be able to see past 40 feet. the sky flashes black. things are grey. not very visually impressive. i am very dissapointed with this purchase. i did purchase it. i should have waited for Call of Duty.
Rating: Summary: Yea, it is Medal of Honor Review: There is no doubt that it is an expansion to Allied Assault. But, what exactly is everybody expecting? It's not a new game, it is the same game with more levels and some new ad ons. I knew this when I bought it. Medal of Honor games haven't changed very much since the beginning so I wouldn't expect this to be any different. Breakthrough I thought was better then Spearhead. I also haven't had any performance problems with it like I did with Spearhead. If you like Allied Assault, then you will like this. I thought the first mission was excellent, the new weapons mix things up a little, and the combat at times was pretty intense. Yes, MOH has its imperfections, and at times can be slightly unrealistic, but its always been like that. I don't really understand how anyone can complain it is just the same old game, no kidding.
Rating: Summary: save your money Review: This game has its moments, but most of the time its more Rambo-style kill everything that moves action. Also, there is very little ammo to be picked up. The game throws a LOT of enemies at you, and several times I've run out of ammo. There may be a pile of corpses at your feet, but you can't get their ammo or weapons. Very frustrating. I am wondering if this is a bug or intentional. At one point I found a cheat code on the net and gave myself ammo that way. The gameplay and graphics are ok if you have enough ammo to survive. There's nothing here however that you can't get out of CALL OF DUTY or the other Allied Assault games. The ammo problem takes away at least one star for me. It literally makes it impossible to play on certain levels.
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING, SOLDIER!! Review: This game is great! One of the best games I have ever played, and I've played a lot of computer games. Will be purchasing MOH: BREAKTHROUGH tomorrow 09/23/03.. and PACIFIC ASSAULT in January. If you like this game, I would also recommend you picking up CALL OF DUTY (from the makers of Medal of Honor) in November 2003. Don't miss any of these games. Medal of Honor is a pure thoroughbred winner! Go download the demo of CALL OF DUTY at www.callofduty.com
Rating: Summary: boring Review: this game would be fun if it didn't have to compete with games like UT2003 and BF1942. I find that the WW2 scenery is dull looking and overall the gameplay is dense. But if you don't like colorful games where there is alot of jumping and flying about maybe this game if for you. Also I find anykind of expansion distasteful because it spreads viable players very thin so there are less games with players to choose from for any given game.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable, but short experience Review: This is an enjoyable expansion, but no more. It plays a lot like the original Medal of Honor, which is a very good thing. For some reason, MoH always has been the first person shooter I enjoyed more than all the others. I am not sure why, but things just seem right. One just has this feeling of "being there" (which is often pretty scary!), rather than the feeling that you are playing a game. Within limits of course. So I am happy about the gameplay. Of course one has to realize that MoH now is a pretty old game, and as with all expansions, one should not expect a massive technology upgrade. I am sure, this will happen with the next MoH, but it certainly hasn't happened here. Also, this game seems to be lacking some of those big, impressive moments that the original game and also (to some extent) spearhead had. This expansion tries to create these great, scripted events and it succeeds better than most other games, but certainly not as well as the previous MoH games. The AI could be smarter, but I haven't noticed any real bad issues like some of the other reviewers seem to have encountered. Once again, things seem to be at the level they were at the original game, which was impressive then, and isn't quite as impressive now. Time-wise, it is a bit short. I played through it in a (long) evening. That doesn't bother me too much though. It was an evening of fun, I lived through some tense moments, and I do not have to spend the whole weekend on this... ;-) I don't really share the opinion of fellow reviewers that this is overly hard. I didn't have too much of a problem playing through this, which may in part be due to the great save-everywhere system. Sometimes there are a lot of enemies, but don't freak out and just go after them one by one. I do agree that the supply of ammo is a bit short. The same is true for first-aid packs. Tip: Try to open doors and check out basements, even if they are not along your main route. Every now and then, it pays of. I did encounter a crash-bug in the very last mission, that crashed the game to the desktop 3 or 4 times at a similar spot. At that mission, I also encountered some frame-rate issues. Hmmm... that's a bit disappointing. Luckily, this wasn't too much of a problem, once again, thanks to the save-game system. I also noticed that the collision detection is not all that great. Sometimes you shoot into an obstacle that should really not be in the way as far as one can tell visually. I also once or twice saw a machine gun stick through the wall, giving away the position of an enemy. And once a soldier just walked through the wall, although I think he actually came through the door and was just clipped out incorrectly. Anyway: None of these issues were too much of a problem, but one would have expected a bit more polish from EA.
Rating: Summary: nice, especially multiplayer Review: This is the best multiplayer FPS game I have ever played. It is so much better than Jedi Knight II or Battlefield 1942. Download the demo from EA games to try it out yourself. This expansion includes more single player missions than Spearhead did. In multiplayer, you get the same maps from Spearhead plus some new ones. So you don't need to buy the Deluxe package or the Spearhead expansion unless you specifically want the (very short) Spearhead single player missions.
Rating: Summary: Not worth the $30 bucks Review: This is the buggiest game I've ever purchased, and it does not stand up to EA Games shining (but rapidly fading) history. For example: I've been stuck on a rooftop early in the game covering some guy name Klaus while he picks the lock on a door. Meanwhile, Nazis are coming out of the woodwork. After about the 10th try, he finally opens the door and we go to the bottom of the stairs where . . . nothing happens. The game is stuck. I cannot walk past him, and he just stands there. I go back outside and nothing happens for several minutes. Eventually the Nazis show back up and I run out of ammo. This makes no sense because we supposedly on a covert mission, and we should be running away once through the door. In addition, the graphics engine is severely showing its age, and overall the gameplay, AI, etc. is way behind.
Rating: Summary: save your money Review: Well just like the rest of the MOHAA games, I can really get into the games. Breakthrough doesn't out do the original MOHAA by any means, but its certainally more enjoyable than Spearhead. I also think Spearhead was a lot tougher than Breakthrough. The first mission meets the standards of the original, however each of the last two missions are significantly shorter. In fact the last mission if I remember correctly was only one or two levels. One factor that made it tougher than the rest of the games in the series is that you can't pick up a killed enemies ammo. I don't know if this is a glitch or not but in the first mission you can pick up the ammo, but only the first mission. In the rest of the missions, when I killed an enemy soldier, their weapon disappeared. This made the game extremely difficult in the Anzio and Monte Cassino when you really need full magazines. So ammo conservation and better marksmanship are required for this part. My favorite part of the game was the additions made that were new. In a game where you are primarily by yourself, there were several times when I found myself fighting within a small squad, which they did a good job with. I also like the addition of the Italian troops. They introduced several new italian weapons ranging from side arms to machine guns. Overall though, if you like FPS games, especially MOH games. This is a good game to have. I'm already counting down until Pacific Assault comes outs.
