Rating: Summary: A review by someone who actually played the PC version Review: Let's be very frank: This game is NOT for children. It deserves the "M" rating, so no whining about its adult themes. If you are of proper age, then this is one of the greatest PC games ever. Graphics are much improved over the PS2 version, taking advantage of the high performance PC graphics boards. On the other hand, make sure you have a good video card and fast system to run it. I wouldn't try it without 256MB of memory and at least a GeForce 3 level videocard (but with those it runs just fine). The nonlinear nature of the game is what keeps you coming back. You can take missions from various people (just as in GTA3) when you want to do it. Some missions advance the storyline, some do not. Having completed the storyline missions for the game, I am still barely halfway through everything there is to do in the game. You can count on playing this game repeatedly for the next year without getting tired of it. For those who have played GTA3, Vice City is an evolutionary change. More vehicle types are available, and you can now go into some of the buildings you see (and create mayhem there). Vice City even allows ownership of property. All property you purchase gives you an extra save point (no more running all over the city just to save a game), and some open up side missions (once completed, that property then provides a side income- you just show up and pick it up). The voice acting for the game (Ray Liotta, Jenna Jameson, Tom Sizemore, and more) is top notch. The cutscenes are definitely worth watching, and adds quite a bit of enjoyment to the game. If you liked GTA3, then buy this game. If you tried GTA3 and didn't like it, then don't bother. If you never played GTA3, but you want to try out a game that is different from normal, linear games, you owe it to yourself to buy Vice City.
Rating: Summary: not as fun or amazing as i thought it might be Review: Grand theft auto vice city is, as you may know, one of the most lauded computer games of all time and you will find no shortage of enthusiasts singing its praises on amazon. While there has also been a great deal of negativity about this game, and moral condemnation, it has usually been from people who don't much actually play computer games and from many who did not take much time to see what this game is about or understand its context. That doesn't mean these people are entirely wrong, but it does mean they are mostly wrong, and, actually, one of the very clever things gta vice city does is actually lampoon the hypocrisy of its critics. This, along with some excellent music, is done on the game's brilliant radio stations that play randomly in any of the cars you steal. I was a little surprised that the in game radio was perhaps my favorite thing from the game.
Anyway, that's a pretty wordy preamble. You maybe just want to know what I thought of the game, so I wont go into an essay on morality in computer games. I'll tell you what I thought. I thought the game was all kind of a joke, which is fine, just, it was a mean joke. Its meant to be played as a mean joke. I didn't like that so much. From here I'll just rank it according to some categories I devised reflecting issues important to me.
Story: C- never very great in computer games, but, taking that into account it was pretty nicely done, ridiculous at times, the free roaming thing integrated well with it, you sort of intersect with different lines of the story as you like, still linear- don't know how you could have a story without that- but, like I said, it's all a bit of a mean joke and I got tired of it. I cant say how well it developed as I only managed to play about a quarter way through this game.
Characters: C- clever, very well voice acted, colorful types but completely lacking in any emotional connection whatsoever.
Gameplay: C here is where I really expected this game to be so great but was surprised it wasn't. The variety of things to do was good, driving, shooting, very different kinds of missions, etc, but mainly I never much liked the shooting stuff. I thought it had a stiff jerkiness to it, found it unnatural and not as good as an average shooter. The city was neat but I never felt like it was very satisfying, like, you could really only be a thug and that's it. I guess that's the point, you could do a lot within that, just, there wasn't any feeling of richness or depth, just breadth.
Graphics: C- again disappointing. I was expecting something terrific, but was surprised to find that, though the city was beautiful in its way, the character modeling was pretty unimpressive and seemed sort of out of date (even more so now). The stylish, cartoony characters of the box are not a fair representation of the more graceless figures in the game.
Dreariness factor: D+ personally mugging people and shooting and vandalizing and stealing my way to power kind of brought me down. It was nice to do it by the ocean though.
Technical issues: did not have problems. That's just me.
Learning factor: C+ the game helps you along pretty well with a while-you-play sort of tutorial. But quite a few things you're left on your own to figure out and controls for keyboard on certain missions (like an awful remote control helicopter) were very difficult to learn and handle.
Product materials: D+ a good example of stylish but sort of useless. Just tell me in detail about how things work and about controls and stuff. All too often in pc games I get either almost no info or, like this, a bunch of setting the stage. Cute, but useless.
Chore factor: F see below
Difficulty: F yes, I am all alone in this maybe, but most games are too hard! Difficulty levels are god's gift to a diverse population! Especially useful difficulty levels. This had none whatsoever. Some things you do are easier, some are hard and, SINCE THERE ARE NO IN GAME SAVES, you (I) have to do them over and over, from the start.
Game saves: F no. there are these save places you can go to or you can sort of lose a lot of stuff and just come out of the police station or hospital, but either way creates quite a bit of tediousness, often involving a bit of a drive just to get there.
Other: if the concept of this game sort of leaves you cold but you're curious because its such a well reviewed game I really say, don't bother. If it sounds hilarious to be a rising young tough driving around `miami' in cars you stole I do sincerely recommend it. It totally got the whole weird pulp fiction gangster movie amoral thing pretty well.
Rating: Summary: It's even fun for total dorks like me! Review: I'm not a big fan of shoot-em-up type games, but after reading some reviews for GTA:VC, I studied it a bit further. After hearing about the amazing graphics and open-ended play, I decided to take a chance and lay down my money. Only twenty bucks considering this game's been out for some time. It was well worth it.
Firstly, yes, the graphics are great. I wouldn't say spectacular, but very good. The scale of the world of Vice City, though, IS truly amazing. There's virtually no where you can't go, and the sheer size of the city itself is daunting. The open-endedness of the game is what really turned me on. I could clobber bums (...) for some extra pocket money, or steal myself a cab to raise some dough. I've tried a few of the missions and rampages, but will obviously need some more practice with weapons before completing them. I look forward to using my clout on the street to advance through the missions.
Coming from someone who's idea of a fun computer game is anything "Sim"-related or with the word "Tycoon" in the title, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is indeed refreshing, despite the bloody mess.
Rating: Summary: second best game ever Review: This game is the best game ever. It has great music, great graphics, and great physics.
The things i didn't like were the AI, the cops are way to stupid to seem real, i watch cops all the time and they are more smart in the game.
Some might say this game (or GTA3) makes kids do stupid things like drive cars when they are under the legal driving age. I'm under 17, and this game did not do that at all. In fact, because of this game and watching cops, I would not want to drive or even get my lisense because i don't trust myself, and it's to easy to crash.
If i ever get angry at school or homework or something, instead of doing something stupid, i just play this game and i'm usually happy after 20-30 minutes. It's like a stress-reliver.
This game is good for people 13 or 14 and up. It's rated M, not NC-R. The bestbuy i got it from had a sticker that read "Do not sell to anyone under 18." I was like WTF? M means recommended 17 and up, like the R rating for movies.
I can't wait until GTA:SA comes out in about a week. It will be the new best game ever.
Rating: Summary: It's sun-drenched 1980s Miami. What're you waiting for? Review: Ok, so Tommy can't swim. And sometimes cars will vanish if you turn your back on them for a second. So what? If you analyzed Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" you could probably find stuff to complain about there too. The point is that this game is possibly the crowning achievement of the relatively brief history of computer gaming, right up there with 1997's Total Annihilation.
Vice City has everything: a huge "fun factor," a great soundtrack, a wide variety of vehicles to carjack, planes, helicopters, boats, a great sense of humor, excellent voice acting, a beautifully imagined 1980's Miami "feel," and an almost unlimited number of things to do: you can undertake the missions you receive from various members of the underworld; you can participate in dirtbike races; you can grab a helicopter or sportbike and just ride around the city; you can be a vigilante, ambulance driver, fireman, or pizza delivery boy to earn cash; you can buy businesses and collect revenue; you can just mug people on the street for money; you can collect money by finding "insane stunt" opportunities around the city... this is the most open-ended game I've ever seen.
The genius of the game is in the details. The more you play Vice City, the more you realize how lovingly crafted it is. It's the synergy between the various gameplay elements that makes this game far more than the sum of its parts. You're a Liberty City (aka New York) thug named Tommy Vercetti, perfectly voiced by Ray Liotta, who ends up in Vice City (Miami) and slowly builds his criminal empire. But the plot here isn't central; it's just an excuse for some of the most fun-filled gameplay ever conceived. Not every mission is brilliant (the remote-controlled helicopter mission, for example, doesn't fit the "feel" of the game and becomes tedious quickly), but why quibble? You probably don't want your kids playing this, but otherwise you have no excuse not to get this game if you haven't yet, especially at this price.
The most fun you'll have legally for twenty bucks.
Rating: Summary: None Stop Addictive fun!!!! Review: I first Played this game on PS2 on vacation with a friend of mine and loved and after a while it came out on PC i finally got it and realized it is even better on PC then it was on PS2 which suprised me. I cannot wait til San Andreas comes out on PC and Maybe this time it will come out on Game Cube then i'll buy it on PC and on the cube that would be sweet. If this game was real life which yes i realize it is not, VCPD (Vice City Police Department) would beg me to be a cop because i can drive and shoot and niether the bad nor the good can catch me ahahahahah. Plus i can do this in a game an there is no consequenses like is i was to go kill a cop in real i know that and that is the fun in it it lets you know the truth in things. you steal a cars your gonna get hurt you mess with a gang you may get killed you jump out of a helicopter and land on a tank yea you won't get up it educational.....in on way or another. Have fun And go Rock Star Games!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Beautifully executed game destroyed by its save system Review: Everything others have said about the brilliance of this game and the attention to detail is true. I won't repeat it.
This is another game where you have to unlock possibilities by completing missions, so claims about how freeform or nonlinear it is are exaggerated. This becomes a problem, given what I describe below.
Why, then, am I giving this game such a low rating?
Simply put, this game manages to squander all of its assets by a typically frustrating console save game structure.
Many of you will be familiar with the problem I describe, but I'm going to do so, in some detail, to make clear what a tedious chore this game can become.
I can't emphasize enough how this will leave everyone, but the die hard game fanatic, wanting to put their fist through the monitor and throw the keyboard across the room(and I am generally an easygoing person, not inclined to violence).
You can save, outside a mission, by entering a particular hotel or buying other buildings for save points throughout the city. So far, so good.
You can't save during a mission, however.
Typical scenario. You go to location A to get a cut scene describing the mission. This sends you to location B in preparation for the mission(to meet someone or change clothes for the mission). Then you head to C where you might have to protect someone by gunning down baddies. After a series of shootouts, and 20 minutes into the mission, you get a cut scene which prepares you for a chase. You jump a bike and prepare to give chase but mistype a key and hit an obstacle being thrown from the bike. Before you can get back on the bike the mission ends in failure, since you lost the chase. At this point you get to go back to location A and retrigger the mission.
Here's another, though this is a sub-mission and thankfully doesn't have to be completed to advance the story. You steal an ambulance and try to complete a series of 12 levels. Each level requires that you race around picking up the number of wounded corresponding to the level number and deliver them to the hospital within the time limit provided. Sound like fun?
You can't save between levels; the timer countdown continues. You could play perfectly to level 11 and accidentally hit the f key(which causes you to exit your vehicle) or you could accidentally hit one of the victims and kill them. You know what happens. Forty minutes of your time wasted and you get to start over at level ONE.
By this time you will probably be wondering if this is a game or a sadistic experiment in psychological torture. One thing it isn't, is FUN.
In short, if you are the type of person who loves the typical console save system and playing missions over and over until you get the execution down perfectly, you will likely love this game. If you are not, I have to warn you strongly to avoid this game. I regret my purchase and I regret giving money to a company that would put me through the frustration I endured. I doubt I will ever bother completing this game. My time is worth too much to me.
What a bitter disappointment. Another brilliant game turned from joy to mind numbing frustration by the supremely idiotic choice of save game system coupled with sadistic mission completion requirements.
Rating: Summary: This is a fun game Review: This is probably one of the best games on the market. I would reccomend it for anyone.
Rating: Summary: Great way to live out one's EVIL Miami Vice Fantasies!!! Review: Be Forewarned: This game is NOT recommended for younger gamers due to the excessive violence, sex (R-rated), and crime related storyline. I recently got this game via online auction for $10; just curious what all the hype was about. Let's get straight to the point: The GOOD: Entertaining voice acting by Ray Liotta (Tommy Vercetti the main character), Dennis Hopper (Steve Scott, the porn king), Burt Reynolds (Avery Carrington, real estate mobster), Philip Michael Thomas (Lance Vance, Tommy's buddy), Deborah Harry (Taxi controller), Jenna Jameson (porn star), etc. Facinating storyline with funny plot twists. Open game format allows playing missions in any order you want, do what you want. LOTS of cars, motorcycles, planes, trucks, ambulances, helos, speedboats, RC airplanes, etc. to commandeer and wreak havoc. LOTS of weapons ranging from butcher knife to RPGs. LOTS of 80s music (Blondie, Rick James, A Flock of Seagulls, Wang Chung, Michael Jackson, etc) and chat parody on radio stations whenever inside a vehicle. Well plotted out city streets and ability to buy real estate and business properties as the game progresses. Some missions are tough and need careful planning and weapons selection. Add your own MP3s to listen to! You can even pick up hookers if you're driving a nice car. Just too much goodies!!! The BAD: Awkward 3rd person view of main character (views can only be changed in vehicles) which means sometimes a structure or the back of Tommy's head can be blocking your view of the enemies. Background graphics can become ungainly and bulky close up (Kind of reminds me of old Tomb Raider games). Vehicle dynamics are purely video game style/not realistic simulations. Games can't be saved during missions and can only be done at "save" houses/properties. Vehicles always exploded when turned over even when there's minimal damage. The UGLY: Game sometimes lock up (at the car dealership) even with video setting at my desktop 1280x1024x32 native resolution. The newest patch didn't help. Last but NOT least: TOMMY CAN'T SWIM!!! Bottom Line: FUN and entertaining game at parties. NOT for younger kids or the politically correct. The 80's music collection ALONE is worth getting this game!
