Rating: Summary: Great Game Review: While I have not played all of the first person shooters out there with a war theme, I have played a number of first person shooters that were classics. All of the games seemed to miss something special, a combination that I was looking for which was well packaged and slick. Call of Duty is a no nonsense first person shooter presented from the view point of WWII. Without writing a book, I will agree with the previous reviews on the technical points and simply recommend this astounding game on it's own merits. If you want to feel what war is like, look no further. This is truly an amazing experience. It's a great piece of software that deserves the top reviews it is getting.
Rating: Summary: War Games Review: I've played many war and military games through the years and I have to say I am very impressed with Call of Duty. It is a World War 2 FPS (First Person Shooter) that places you on the battlefields of three different nations. A United States Private, A British Seargent, and a Russian foot soldier. The first two campaigns, American and British, take place just hours before Operation Overlord commences. On both of these you are part of Airborne units dropping behind the enemy line. On the Russian Campaign you wade across a river to the ruined city of Stalingrad. This is the widest section of the campaign, as you get to fight in the city streets as an infantryman, then help a squad as a sniper in the city, and even later become a tank commander. The battlefield action is simply amazing. The sounds of bullets, tanks, and teammates and enemies scream orders and take cover. The background music that will play, as in the charge into red square in Stalingrad, truly adds to the amazing cinematic effect of the experience. I believe the game is run on the Quake 3 engine, which while slightly outdated, it holds very smoothly and will not dissapoint but the pickiest of players. But of course there are a few bugs and problems that appear here and there. While you are in and act as a squad you often times find yourself taking out most of the enemies if you want to keep the game rolling. Also after a few days of playing and when you find yourself looking for a difficult challenge the ai takes cover half exposed at times. I also found the damage system quite annoying. While it takes near 20 bullets to kill an allied soldier, the enemy can take 4 or 5 bullets and get right back up and fight you off if given proper time. There are few actual glitches and bugs that I've seen as of yet, just an occasional foot or gun through solid objects like doors and windows. The only other problem I have with this game is the allmost horrificly short campaign. I beat the game well within 15-20 hours of playing time on the medium difficulty. The answer to this length is the great replayability, trying different tactics and difficulties is you can take the experience online with others on the maps copying missions from the single player mode. (small tweaks here and there). There are 5 different modes of player including deathmatch, team deathmatch, behind enemy lines, retrieval, and search and destroy. This can test your skills to the max (Unless your our, or are fighting "Rambos". They are the players who follow much of any tactics and run into every room blasting away ammo.) But overall this game is definately the best WW2 FPS I have played and I can say allmost anyone who plays this game will fall in love with it for a long time to come.
Rating: Summary: It's just Medal Of Honor with a different title Review: It is an EXACT copy of Medal of Honor Allied Assault and the expansion packs that followed. Don't waste your money. They didn't even try to make it orginial. It is just the same old, scripted mission action repackaged. I enjoyed the game. I liked it...but I did not think it was worth my money. There are some new things that are nice...but that list is so short, it is still not worth $40 or $50!!! DON"T BELIEVE THE HYPE>>>>>>>> Download the demo or borrow a copy from a friend and TEST DRIVE it first people. If you like it...then buy it but don't rush out because of the overhyped 5 star votes in here!!!
Rating: Summary: A New Look at an Old War Review: With all of the WWII games afoot, I was hesitant to buy yet another WWII game. I was fully expecting a Medal of Honor clone and was pleasantly proven wrong. Call of Duty allows the player to dive into three different roles - US, British, and Soviet soldiers. Each country's segment has its own style, look, and rules of engagement (for example, Soviet soldiers who retreat are shot on sight!). What is great for hardened gamers like myself is that I could kick up the game to a more difficult and more appropriate level for my gaming ability. The accuracy of the settings and battles is amazing. The first Soviet mission environment looks like the computer graphic version of the film Enemy at the Gates. All the missions are varied and innovative. You'll never find yourself on a tedious mission, rushing through to get it over with. I experienced no bugs or crashes in the game, which is rare these days! Having other soldiers with you who actually contribute to the gameplay and watch your back was great! The only annoying thing was when my fellow soldiers would stand too close and I'd get killed because I couldn't duck out of the way. Move it, Elder! The only flaw I found with the game was that there wasn't an opportunity to really explore the environment. Also, I never came across any civilians. I suppose only a WWII historian would know how accurate that is. All in all, Call of Duty was amazing, refreshing, and fun.
Rating: Summary: Now THIS is a war! Review: This game got me to realize how truly important sound is to a game. Really, there isn't too many "oooh, look at that eye candy" moments in the game. The graphics are nice, but nothing spectacular. But with all the noise and commotion going on, you forget all about it. From that moment in the first mission when your allies drop in all around you in parachutes and enemy MG's starts to fire up...you are immersed! I was, at first, a bit confused when the game switched over to the SAS side. I was getting used to being called Private Martin, and all the sudden, people are calling me Sgt. Evans! The game switches again to a Russian campaign, then finally, you get final missions as Sgt. Evans and Pvt. Martin to finish the game off. The single player game isn't a long one, but a very satisfying one. It's worth playing over in the 'veteran' mode (I think that's what the highest difficulty is). Although you'll have to save pretty much every time you kill an enemy, it's quite a fun challenge! It helps you learn the higher reflex tactics needed if you want to succesfully transition to online play. Or you can just belly flop into it. Multiplayer is fun, and as of now the online players are helpful sorts and try to work as a team. Speaking of multiplayer, one great aspect of FPS these days are the mod community. Already there are mods in the works, and with the games popularity steadily rising, I only see good things for the future of CoD and its mod. This game will stay in my HD (which is now down to 3 GB) for quite some time.
Rating: Summary: Game of the Year 2003 ? Review: With the news of Half Life 2 and Doom 3 pushed back to 04, it just might be entirely possible. This is the war game you have been waiting for. This game captures as close as possible on a video game of what it is really like ( I know I am a war vet of Afghanastan and Iraq ) Graphics are excellent, and this is not a game that will run sluggish with all graphic detail up, quite impressed. Sound is the best I have heard in awhile, you CANNOT play this game at night with a roomate sleeping in the next room, you must play this LOUD, and you WILL get the full effect. One last note about the sound, a surround sound system is a must for this game, if there are voices, bullets, bombs, etc. that are behind you, you will hear them behind you, also a subwoofer is supreme for the dropping bombs, mortars, grenades and such. Any & every accolade you have heard about this game is true....believe the hype! Only downside is length of 1P game, which I think is reversed by the fact that after you beat it, you will play it again, for the fact that there are very few scripts in the game.............translation, the same things dont keep happening, i.e. the same guy doesnt get shot in the same place everytime you play a mission, which to me for that one fact sets this game far away from others. This game will have you literally ducking your head in front of your computer screen from the buzzing bullets going past your head.......it is that real. This game has single handedly taken my attention away from my consoles back to my PC. Finally.
Rating: Summary: Move Over MOHAA! Review: Run, don't walk and buy this game! If you loved MOHAA you will like this one even more. Better graphics/sound and ability to lay prone and crawl. Plus you get to shoot down dive bombers with anti-aircraft, and engage enemy tanks in a running field tank battle. Re-enactments of scenes from "Enemy at the Gates," is very cool. Best FPS in town!!
Rating: Summary: WWII Arcade at its Best! Review: This is probably the best WWII shooter made to date. Don't fool yourself, it's not a simulation--you can shoot one of the Krauts three times with a Garand and he'll still struggle to his feet and grab his weapon. That being said, it is one of the most intense, most immersive, and most fun shooters ever made. In one of the first scenarios you are dropped into Normandy as one of the pathfinders for the 101st AB in the wee hours of D-day, and the atmosphere is just unreal. You can hear the crickets chirping and other ambient sounds. This game is still far from Operation Flashpoint (probably the most realistic FPS/simulation ever) in terms of realism, but it's several notches up the ladder from the old Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (there's actual blood this time). Don't think about getting this game for another second--run out and buy it now!! You'll not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: GREAT game but short Review: This game is simply amazing but it's too short. I beat it in like 3 days :P Its worth the buy though... all together a beautiful game... Has some problems with the ati 9xxx video cards so be careful, you will need to download a patch from ati to make ur game work better.
