Rating: Summary: One of the better ghost stories ever told Review: The title grabbed my attention. Everything about Amber:Journeys Beyond is haunting. The game starts out with a lonely drive to a secluded mansion. This sets the mood perfectly for the rest of the game. Your job is to 'exorcise' three restless spirits that haunt the deserted mansion. You are given many unique tools to help you in your quest. The game manages to scare the player without using blood or gore. Amber successfully captivated my imagination and used that to frighten me. This game is not for the weak at heart. The only negative about the game is its brevity. I found myself wanting more stories at the end. The puzzles are well integrated and not too difficult. If you are looking for a good scare, try Amber: Journeys Beyond.
Rating: Summary: customer Review: Amber was a tidy little adventure. Not an epic on the scale of Riven or Myst, but definitely entertaining, and a great bargain. Consistently encountered problems in the 3rd story: alwyas extremely slow running and occasionally the program would freeze. Not the kind of game to keep you thinking about it when away from the computer, but nice graphics and occasionally pretty creepy (even scary). At 10 bucks you can't go wrong if you are looking for some light entertainment.
Rating: Summary: Please do a sequel Review: I've played a variety of games over the last few years and Amber left me wanting more. There are not too many games in the offering such as Amber but there certainly is a market hungry for more like them. Amber was suspenseful and fairly challenging. Also a "Best Buy" for the money. The plot's concerning the home's different owners over the years was creative.
Rating: Summary: This is a real sleeper! Review: Best buy for gamers! Puzzles are fairly easy, but the content and story line are wonderful. Left me wanting more. When I replayed the game some time later, it was just as enjoyable. In fact, just thinking about it, I'm going to play the game again! This game was off the market for awhile and brought back only because so many gamers requested it.
Rating: Summary: great ghost story Review: I love adventure/puzzle games and wouldn't mind seeing other games like this. It is 4-year old technology (which shows)and I found this to be a problem. I could only get the game to be visible in about half of my screem (even in 640X480 mode)but other than that had no problems. I wish the game play was a bit longer as well. But I did find the ghost story line pretty frightening. I only played this game when my husband was in the room. I gave the game only four stars for the problems I mentioned above and the simplicity of a few of the puzzles. If you haven't played that many games, I would add a half star.
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully scary and entertaining! Needs a Sequel! Review: I love adventure puzzle games and this did not disappoint! It really is more scary than you would think and all without a lot of the gore that frankly sickens me that you see in many computer games and movies. Reminiscent of the older scary ghost story movies that can create a chill up your spine and many looks over your shoulder. Really engrossing and like many of the other reviewers I found it a lot shorter than I'd like. Please game creators, give us a sequel and make it much longer! I, for one, would be willing to pay the extra money!
Rating: Summary: Great idea, mostly good execution Review: I'm not into the puzzle games as a rule -- myst and such are nice to look at but I don't have the patience for them. It was close to Halloween when I picked up this game, looking for ambience and mood-setting. I got that in abundance, and really enjoyed the settings and effects. Unfortunately, I found many of the puzzles rather contrived (as they seem to be in most of these games) and didn't fit in with the story. Still, it did pretty much what I needed it to do. No over-the-top slasher/evil beastie/summoned demon bad guys here -- just low-key trapped spirits and bits of paranormal phenomena. It was worth the money.
Rating: Summary: If you are easily scared, don't play this game. Review: Amber sets a wonderfully scary mood that may just give you a few chills while you play (and, maybe a few after). The plot is fairly good, but the puzzles are only mildly challenging for an experienced adventure gamer and the game is rather short. All in all, the game left me satisfied with what I had done, but wishing there was a few hours left of play. So, if you are a hard core adventure gamer with only limited interest in the paranormal, I would not recommend Amber. But, if you love a good ghost story, get the game, dim the lights, and enjoy the experience.
Rating: Summary: Great Price for cool game Review: This is a cool sort of supernatural type game with good graphics and interface. Love to play it and the price is unbeatable.
Rating: Summary: A good value! Review: There's a ton of first-person adventure games out there thanks to Myst, but there's nothing wrong with that! What matters is if the game is enjoyable to play, and in the case of Amber I'd most definately say yes. Amber: Journeys Beyond is a first person adventure game with somewhat simple graphics and animation... but at the same time the plot and story hold your interest. The premise is that you are 'checking up as a favor to a friend' on a woman who bought a haunted house so she could study the paranormal. She uses a headset called the Amber device so she can observe the ghosts and actually travel in the spirit realm. When you find her she's in a catatonic state, trapped outside of her body with no way of geting back. Your job is to help your friend by guiding the other spirits in the house to their final rewards by either helping them realize that they're dead, finding an item that they lost, or helping them finish something they never completed in life. There's three people you need to aid before you can help your friend, and no particular order in which to do it. Although the game is only on one CD, and the graphics are simplistic Amber is still an impressive game for the value. It has enough ambiance to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up more than once (imagine walking into the bathroom and seeing words write themselves on the mirror). Amber can scare you, but it does it in a subtle way instead of shoving a bucketload of gore in your face. The gameplay is a bit short, but still much more than you'd normally expect in a single CD game. If you want an inexpensive yet interesting adventure this is the game for you.
