Summary: I'm a non-gamer and I LOVE IT!!
Review: I had a co-worker back in 97 that had this game. I almost had to threaten his life to get him to do any work for playing this game. Now almost 8 years later, I finally picked it up just to see what the big deal was.

This game is like software crack. I haven't had it two weeks yet and I've spent some crazy hours playing this game. I started with a rogue and got up to the 10th level of the dungeon with her before I hit a dead-end. Go down the steps to the next level and DIE! She was surrounded immediately and suffered a severe beat-down EVERY time.

I then started a second game with a warrior. I got him all the way to Archbishop Lazarus where I had a similar situation. Death at every turn and no way out to fix it. Then I found the beauty of Diablo. Just click New Game. You flush the old game but NOT the character. Yes, you're starting back at the first level of the dungeon but you've still got your 23rd level warrior who now laughs at the pithy little creatures of those lower levels.

The Butcher, who made both my rogue and warrior suffer mightily on the first trip down, died after only three hits from my warrior and 10 arrows from my rogue downed him without her suffering even a broken nail.

Diablo II and the Lord of Destruction expansion set are waiting in the wings, but this game still has a few miles left in it before I move on. I still have to bring a wizard up - which stands to be much more challenging. I am looking forward to it.

This game is incredible - I probably won't be able to handle the sequal.

Summary: My drug of choice for about six months
Review: When I discovered this game, I lost six months of my life. I went to work, came home, and played this game. Loser? I guess. In my defense, I did maintain contact with the outside world during this period of darkness (I always played the game with the lights out), although perhaps to them I seemed somewhat pale and inarticulate. (I'm kidding.)

For me, this game was hard to master at first. I'd never played a PC game of any kind, for the simple reason that I was afraid I'd become addicted. And, of course, it happened. I struggled with every character through the first few levels of the church, and it must have been two or three weeks of serious playing - well past 3am even on a work night - before I finally made my way down to Diablo's lair.

Maybe it was the lateness of the hour, the darkness of the room, or perhaps more likely both, but when Diablo finally came out he literally scared the tar out of me. What an incredibly well rendered "monster". The rendering of Diablo in Diablo II did not evoke similar fear, even if it was somewhat more impressive.

One of the things I liked about this game was that I never played with any cheats, unlike Diablo II (maphack, etc.). So the game was always dark, and it was always scary. In some ways, it was better than its successor - but not in enough ways. Diablo II (expansion) is the superior of the two, but this isn't a game to overlook.

Summary: Great
Review: Are you looking for a challenging game? Are you looking for a game that has a good storyline? Then this game is the one for you! This game gets harder and harder for every level you go to. At first its a small change but once you get to the final levels of the game the difficulty becomes apparent. A must play!

Summary: JUST KEEP PLAYING!!!!!
Review: I just read a review that said that they had just gotten to level 5, and said that everything looks the same as it did in level one.... and there absouletly right. But, had they played one more level... he would have entered the catacombs!, a whole new enviroment with different, and harder mosters, better weapons, new spells, and more expierience to gain! And its not those are the only two areas either... ( even I would have thioght it would have been crappy then), theres also the caves, and hell. So please to you diablo naysayers, or any body planing on getting the game, just beet it up to the caves.... I would be very certain you would change your mind about it. Also ive played diablo 2 and must say i was impressed, but I only got to level 3 so... im dont really know enogh to give my two cents about it. And especially for anyone considering buying diablo, consider the following... I own the following games: Age of Empires 2, The Sims Deluxe Edition, Medal of Honor:Allied Assault(and the breakthrough expansion), Age of Mytholigy, Grand Theft Auto 3, just to name a few. I only listed those because there some of my best games. And listen to this, DIABLO BEATS EM' ALL! Battle.net isnt bad either. In fact, thats how I came about my copy... see, a friend of mine gave me a burnt copy hoping to play multiplayer with me. And we did.... FOR 12 HOURS!!!

Summary: An addictive classic!!!
Review: I haven't played this game in several years and picked it up a couple of weeks ago. The reason I picked up this game over everything else is that it is soooo cheap. What other game offers so much for ten bucks??!?!?

The best thing about Blizzard is Battle.Net, which is free after you purchase the game. This adds so much value to this game and really makes it a lot of fun to play. It doesn't take long to find some companions and go into the dungeons killin' uglies. Sometimes you need to look out for the player killers, but there is always somebody there willing to help somebody out.

Another good thing is that it doesn't require much knowledge to play. Just play it for a few minutes and then it all makes sense. It's ease of use of the features is a very strong plus.

Finally, the replay value is enormous. The dungeons are never the same and there are many quests you can go on to keep on challenging you.

A great game. It has an 'M' for its violence and gore, but this rating really surprises me as there is no blood and the graphics are not that detailed.

Summary: A good game (even in 2004)
Review: I just played Diablo for the first time (Aug. 2004). I wish I had played it much earlier before playing great games like Morrowind and the Baldur's Gate series. Then I would be able to appreciate it as the classic that many have claimed it to be. Anyhow, I found this game very entertaining from start to finish. It was easy to learn to play, suspenseful, and I didn't notice any bugs (which is a real surprise for games nowadays).

I liked a lot of things about this game. First, it has a great soundtrack, especially once you're in the dungeon. The voice acting is pretty good and the other sound effects help build atmosphere. For an eight-year-old game, I think the graphics look pretty good. There are a lot of really creepy areas and monsters in the game, and they are animated well. The map overlay was a good idea, since it allows you to play while seeing exactly where you are on the map.

Regarding gameplay, most of the time you'll be clicking the mouse to move, attack, pick up things, and open menus. There is really nothing difficult to learn. I personally was not bothered by all of the clicking as long as the fights were challenging. During the first few levels, my figher had no problems even when faced by a mob of enemies. However, by the 7 or 8 level, I had to fight more strategically since the monsters had become much more difficult to beat. By the 12th level, you'll have to draw enemies away from their groups and fight them one at a time. The end fight was appropriately difficult, but not as insanely challenging as the final fights in Baldur's Gate 2. One really great thing about this game is that each time you start a new game the dungeon levels are redrawn and new monsters, treasure, traps, and other things are generated. I really can't see playing this game again since there are so many better games out there right now. However, I like this formula which allows for a tremendous degree of replayability.

There were a few things I didn't care for, but they are all together minor. First, this is not primarily a role-playing game, so it is unfair to criticize it for not being more like Baldur's Gate and other RPGs. Diablo is mainly an arcade-style action adventure with some limited role-playing possibilities. You can only choose between 3 classes (fighter, sorceror, or rogue); your stats are preset, although you can control how points are allocated between abilities during the game; and NPC interaction is very limited and more or less restricted to trading and quest-giving. Also, the town itself is small and static, and your character cannot carry much in his/her inventory (which will ensure many visits to town for supplies). However, in the dungeon itself, you do get the sense that you are surrounded by evil, and there is a good amount of suspense as you get closer to the end.

I am glad that I finally got around to playing this and will definitely be playing Diablo 2 (plus LoD) next. For anyone who hasn't played Diablo yet, it's definitely worth a look. However, don't expect it to rival games like Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights in complexity, options, gameplay, or anything else. Again, it's good old hack-and-slay arcade action with a pinch of role-playing thrown in.
