Summary: Bleh!
Review: The first warning I got that perhaps Rhem was not going to set any records for standards was on installation. "You will need QuickTime 4!" it informed me. "Here is the website to get it!" A quick search confirmed it: they require QuickTime (an older version at that) but don't supply it. You have to go to the Apple website and download it yourself. Is that impossibly hard, does it mean the game is useless and mean? No, but it's a flashing red light all the same: the game is not going to be helpful. You want a shortcut, something on the Start menu, access to the game in any fashion? Go get it yourself.

Rhem feels and plays like a 1992 attempt to be Myst, with the bad graphics, cheap memory-stingy movement, and dull storyline that we've come to associate with the era. The scenery is machines, machines, machines. I lost patience with it in record time and hope I never get bored enough to go back to it.

If you played the original Myst and haven't used your computer for anything but spreadsheets since then, you might find Rhem mildly diverting. Otherwise don't bother.

Summary: Sort of a Plain-looking Myst
Review: The only real problem with installing Rhem wasn't so much the CD-ROM, but the Mac OS X patch you can get from Got Game. It turns out that there are a lot of little .bins you have to open as well.

If you're looking for the kind of fantastic architecture and breath-taking scenery you might find in Myst or the Riddle of the Sphinx series, you probably won't like Rhem. It's basically an abandoned pumping station you have to escape. (Unfortunately, it's never explained just WHY you would steal a railcar to come to Rhem.) The buildings are designed purely for function. Apparently, this is more of a set-up for Rhem 2 (which, from what I've seen at the Got Game website, has much better graphics), as it raises more questions than it answers.

Some of the clues don't make sense within what little of a story it has. You'll find a lot of clues at the beginning that won't be useful until much later in the game, and you have to solve one puzzle before you can even GET to the others. I've always felt that a game should be both challenging AND logical. Some of the logic is lacking here.

If nothing else, it's a good diversion on a rainy afternoon, but it won't blow your mind.

Summary: Let me cut through the chase for you.
Review: This game is simply great! Non-linear thinking. Tough puzzles which are simply brilliant and no need for cheats if you pay close attention. I can't wait for Rhem 2 to come out! That of course is just my opinion.

Now there does seem to be a good deal of controversey surrounding this game. I will simply cut through the discussion and sum up this whole Rhem situation once and for all.

The simple truth is:

1. The graphics are not bad. I've seen better but they aint bad.

2.If you got a good system then installation and play are easy.

3.Puzzles are the best i've ever seen. Yes, as good as the Myst series {which I also loved}.

4.Story is almost non-existent. You are simply in Rhem and need to get out. That's not to say there is no story, there is, it's just not much of one. But the good news is it doesn't really matter.

So to put a nail in this, the bottom line is- If you love a game similar to the Myst series and love a good story, then don't buy this game.

However if you crave mind bending puzzles and sometimes feel a little dissconnected from a story anyway {as I do}, then this game is for you!

That's it in a nutshell- Like story? Don't buy this game.

Love puzzles and don't really care much about story? Then buy this game. You WILL NOT be dissappointed!

Review: This game, the minute i put it in, was horrible...i wish that i hadnt paid 29.99 for this! Myst, Riven, Exile, Riddle of the Sphynx and Omega Stone are so much better!

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!

Review: This is one of the worst of the Myst wannabes.

I am a long time adventure gamer. I have been beating puzzles for a long time and I love the first person genre.

The puzzles in this game were not especially difficult. They were not especially interesting either, because this game's biggest problem is that it completely fails to give one a feeling of being immersed in another place (in the manner of myst, riven, yaddayadda). After an hour of running around in "Rhem" and solving puzzles right and left, I had no sense of connection to a larger plot or intriguing characters. We are not walking through a city which feels like it was ever occupied. As far as I can tell, Rhem is just a city designed to be a puzzle. Period. We walk through the streets of this maze-like place figuring out symbols and writing down numbers. YAWN. Even the puzzles are so simple that my child could have this one solved in no time.

I can go on playing this game, solving puzzles and eventually I might even discover a point to all of it, but so far it is just tedious and boring like the worst of the Dreamcatcher fiascos.

I don't want to.

Summary: Blah.
Review: This was fairly lousy. My fiance and I have been playing games like this for years, so we have plenty of practice and basis for comparison. The puzzles in Rhem tended to make very little (if any) sense in the context of the game, so they weren't logical. As for the graphics, it looks like someone went bonkers applying the same two or three textures to every possible surface. I think the people who designed this game need to go back and play some good quality games themselves so they can get an idea of what a puzzle game should be like. The end has no interest or closure...just basically, congratulations, you made it through.
Blah. Don't waste money on this.
