Rating: Summary: Good, but not as good as The Longest Journey Review: I bought this because it has been compared to The Longest Journey. I can see the similarities in the storyline (woman trying to save the world) and the setup. The character in this story, like April in TLJ, walks around talking to people in order to get information for her mission. Where it lost me a little was in the simplicity of the game. In TLJ, once you discovered something new, you had to track down everyone to see if they had more info for you. In Syberia, there were several characters who never added anything to the game. There were also many places that I would've liked to explore a bit. The graphics were good and the puzzles are decent (even I got most of them, which isn't saying much), but there aren't many to play around with. I finished the game quickly, which was disappointing. Overall, Syberia is an average game, but the closest you'll get to another TLJ. If you can get it on sale, go for it!
Rating: Summary: Benoit Sokal is a GOD!!! Review: Benoit Sokal is indeed a hero of a storyteller. The game is packed with passion and emotion. The scenes are beautifully woven together and the views are breathtaking. The soundtrack is excellent. It's as if you're watching a movie and you play a part of it. Gameplay will keep you glued to your PC 'till the wee hours as you solve the logical puzzles. One of the most beautiful games ever created since the Myst Trilogy. Buy it by all means, Syberia 2 will be released October 2003.
Rating: Summary: Syberia Review: I have played many adventure games and this one is by far one of the most beautiful! The graphics are very well done and the game play is smooth. The puzzles were a little more easy than I am used to,but at least I didn't get frustrated .If something gets missed the game doesn't progress-so at least you know that you have done everything that you can do in a particular area. The story line is good and you get to know your characters well. My only complaints are: I wish that it hadn't ended when it did-I had expected to do more exploring! The number of people to interact with was limited making the game easier than it could have been. I hope that another game like this comes out soon as I was impressed with how well it was done. Well worth the money!
Rating: Summary: They're NOT dead afterall! Review: All this talk about the death of traditional graphic adventures, and then this gem pops up! Syberia is about as traditional a third-person graphic adventure as you're going to find these days (well, along with The Longest Journey, of course) and I definitely recommend it to fans of the genre. The game is played with a third-person perspective. You control the protagonist, Kate Walker, by clicking on parts of the screen to make her walk there. If you can use and item, pick something up, or talk to someone, the cursor changes accordingly. Anyone who's played Circle of Blood, Broken Sword or The Longest Journey knows exactly what to expect. To anyone else, you'll figure it out very quickly. The interface is elegant and intuitive. I won't go too deeply into the plot, as I imagine other reviewers have already done that. Suffice to say, Kate Walker is a New York lawyer who finds herself in some remote parts of Europe trying to settle a bit of a legal problem. Sounds drab, right? Well, it's not. By not basing the game in real-world locations, the designers were free to take liberties and design a fascinating world filled with interesting characters and some of the most inventive creations to come around in a long time. All of this is shown beautifully with some of the best graphics I've ever seen in a computer game. Almost everything looks photo-realistic. Just watching the water move is breathtaking. Adding to the atmosphere is a subtle yet hauntingly effective musical score that comes and goes as you progress. Most importantly though, is that the designers managed to create a protagonist that you will care about. You keep playing because you like her and want to see how things work out in the end. That's a rare quality in a game. Are there downsides? Of course. Having played this after "The Longest Journey," I was a little disappointed by the size of the game. It's a lot smaller (though I didn't complete it as quickly as some of the other reviewers here.) I also missed the immersiveness. In other games of this ilk, you can click on all sorts of things and hear the protagonist make some sort of comment about them. Kate never does this. Perhaps she's the only mentally sane protagonist in computer game history, since she never talks to herself, but I still missed hearing little descriptions of things. This also makes the game a bit too easy-- if something isn't part of a puzzle, you can't interact with it at all, thus limiting the possibilities. The game ran without a hitch on my system (Windows XP, P4 1.8gigahertz, 128 megs RAM, 64 meg GEForce 2 graphics, SoundBlaster Live.) I was never dumped out to the desktop, and that alone is worth something, particularly since quite a few games seem to have problems with XP. Bottom line: Compared to The Longest Journey (really its only competition right now), this one falls a little short. Still, it's an excellent game and well worth playing. So if you haven't yet played Longest Journey, go buy that game immediately, then buy this one. If you already played TLJ then this is your best bet until TLJ2 comes out (if ever.)
Rating: Summary: The answer to an adventure game player's wishes! Review: I had just about given up hope that anyone would ever produce another decent adventure game -- and then along came Syberia. Gorgeous, yes, but with thought and intelligence behind it. Topnotch writing (and translations), acting, plot, puzzles, humor, and ... well, I can't say enough good things. More, more, more! Publishers, are you listening? Make them like this!!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Beautifull !! Review: If you love adventure games (just plane point and click adventure games), you must absolutely get your hands in this one. Be aware though, there are no messy or irrational puzzles!! Everything here makes perfect sense and your only weapons will be your wits, accute observation and care to details. But Syberia is not about puzzles, it is about telling a nice, dense and beautifull story about self grow and discovery. Along "The Longest Journey" these is which I, humbly, beleive are the adventure games all about: telling a story. And it has to be bright, beautifull, original and, for GOD sake, MAKE SENSE!.... I hope every old and young fashion adventure gamer would support this game. You will never regret it!!
Rating: Summary: Pleasantly Surprised Review: I have had some experience with Dreamcatcher games a few years ago; and to be honest, I was a bit leery whether this one would live up to its packaging. I was very impressed with the box graphics and the storyline, so I decided to give it a try. Imagine my amazement when I finally got to the game! The pre-rendered graphics were breath-taking and the sound superb. The integration of realtime 3d graphics with pre-rendered backgrounds in the interface was handled quite well. The storyline was engaging right from the start, and advancing through the game was not as difficult as I was expecting. I became so engrossed with the game, that my first evening playing it - I ended up in front of the screen for 3 hours! The next evening: another 3! This game pulls you in from the opening movie and keeps you there for quite a while. I was hard pressed to turn it off for the night! The only minor glitch that bothered me was from an artists point of view. As the main character was walking on or near any steps, her interaction with them was a little jerky, and the shadow underneath her was not handled very smoothly. But after an hour or so, I really didn't mind it too much... ;) This is one puzzle/adventure game that I would definately recommend to anyone!
Rating: Summary: Totally Rocks! Review: I love these types of games - in fact, I prefer them to all others. Dreamcatcher has done a great job of improving game play (if you've played the Dracula series you know exactly what I mean). The puzzles are just the right difficulty level - although it only took me about 12 hours to complete the game. The graphics were totally awesome (Dreamcathcer has ALWAYS had excellent graphics). The controls were very intuitive, and the game play was smooth - no erratic movements. My only complaint is that it only took 12 hours to complete - I want more......
Rating: Summary: Great... Review: It had been a while since I'd played a quality adventure game, and finally I came across Syberia. This game is stunning in almost all areas; the graphics are phenomenal, the art direction is nothing short of beautiful. The story, while wonderful in concept, is hindered by several aspects. First of all, the melodrama which takes place in the U.S., outside of the game setting, gets utterly tedious to listen to. What makes this fact even more frusterating is that the drama is completely unnecessary. Kate Walker's fiancee and devious friend have nothing to do with the object of the game in and of itself. What they do have to do with is an annoying little side plot which does nothing to enhance the game experience. You can get past this, however. What I recommend for all players new to the game, is that whenever you get a call from Dan or Olivia, skip all the text immeadiatly. Believe me, it's nothing important, plus you get the luxury of withholding a large amount of sap that may or may not keep you up at night.
Rating: Summary: Not as great as all the hype... Review: Syberia is a cool game to be honest and the graphics have no comparison. This game reminded me a lot of The Longest Journey but it lacked the TLJ's wonderful and expanding plot. The main idea in Syberia is to go trapising all around pseudo-Europe in search of the Heir to a toy factory, you being a lawyer are trying to get the signature to sign over the toy company to an even bigger toy company. The puzzles were a plus, they did require some time and thinking. But overall the game lacked a lot of action *yes, I know it is an Adventure game* I wasn't looking for 'let's blow everyone away action' but I wanted a little, 'ooh that was interesting, what does that mean?' or 'uh-oh looks like some trouble, time for some quick thinking!'. Syberia, in my opinion lacked a lot of of things that TLJ had and eventually became very dull and tedious. Often you ended up doing misc. quests that seemed to have very little bearing on what happened in the game. Not to mention the ending at the end! I expected a better ending but I figure now that they're setting it up for a sequel. All I have to say is if there is a sequel in the works, please make it interesting!!!
