Summary: A Wonderful Journey
Review: First of all, I would like to say that I had no trouble getting this game to run, at all. I have a 900 MHz machine using an Nvidia geforce 5200 pci with 128MB of ram. It does help to have the latest drivers, though, no matter what you are using. I am now playing the live "prologue" on-line game and have had very little trouble with it either, despite the fact that it is still in the beta testing phase. I am using a cable modem connection for that, and I doubt it would fly at all without a fast connection like that, but that doesn't surprise me.

And now, to the game itself:

I have been a devoted fan of the Myst games for years, and I have played and enjoyed all three of the previous installments. Uru is a great addition to the Myst series and mythology, and I found it satisfying in every way.
However, the game is a little different from its predecessors, and it takes some getting used to. The puzzles are quite difficult, and because this game is the first in the myst series to utilize full real-time 3d graphics, the look and the interface are a little different too. It takes some getting used to, but its well worth the effort. Cyan has done a great job here, in my opinion.

As for the on-line game, it isn't really in a state to say one way or the other yet, but I have great confidence that when it is officially opened, it too will be amazing.

Summary: Do NOT Waste Your Money
Review: I am a computer geek - I own a VERY NEW computer - I can't play this game

Amazon.com does not take back opened software

I have downloaded TONSA stuff trying to play this game simply because I LOVED Myst and Riven

Didn't work.....:(

Summary: Don't bother
Review: I've played all the other Myst games and loved them. This game however, gave me nothing but technical headaches. Reading the system requirements gave me heartburn and I have a degree in computer science! The game crashes on my Window XP Professional system, 512MB RAM, 1.6 GB processor *and* a (supposedly) supported NVidia card. The error message it left in the application log was entirely useless, demonstrating just how terrible the programming must be on this thing. Ubisoft's technical support is non-existent.

Summary: Unstable and Boring
Review: After just recently finishing Myst III Exile, I was so dissapointed
in Uru. The system requirements are too specific. Very few video cards will even work with the game, and if you do get it to work,
it's boring. Running across the desert is amusing for about 10 strides, not a whole game. Amazon will not leave this post here
because it will hurt their sales, but I whole heartedly recommend NOT spending money on this dismal failure.

Summary: Works Now - In No Rush - Confident Future Patch Will Rescue
Review: Upgraded my PIII from 550 to 1.4 GHZ CPU ($135), bought a 128MB GEForce FX5200 8X AGP (backward compatible to the 2X AGP slot I have on my PC) but still a relatively low-end card compared to others available today ~ $70), a Soundblaster Live card using analog sound ($30).

I'm in no hurry to play/finish the game. I can play (maybe) 1-2 hours a week. I don't buy many other games so I'm going to savor this one. The graphics are beautiful and the sound is awesome. For $230 I "rescued" my aging PC (faster on all other applications, so not a waste of money). And, I can enjoy the sequel to Exile (my favorite Myst game to date). I fully expect this game to exceed Exile in effects. I'm glad to hear URU has some tough puzzles too. I don't buy cheater books and don't accept any "hints" from others (Riven took me over 2 years to solve - but I'm not in any rush as I don't play any other games ~ well, I've got one other favorite ~ Prince of Persia and I have bought the latest but haven't taken it out of the box yet). The thrill of discovery and the challenge of solving puzzles adds to the enjoyment this game offers.

Yes, even with my "upgrade" I still have to "baby" the game and reboot my machine after playing for 30-60 minutes (the game can still freeze my Windows 2000 OS). But, it's playable and enjoyable and I'm confident a future patch will be released that deals with the freezing of the video (from time-to-time).

So - why did I give this 4 stars? The question asks: "How much fun is this game?" The game is tremendous in sound and graphics and normally would get a 5-star rating from me. It is a visual and audio adventure that is amazing and enjoyable. I can't wait to explore more in the months to come. Even the "testing" I had to do to fine-tune the game (have it play at it's best without crashing the machine) was fun for a computer tech like me. But for that same reason, I had to lower the rating to 4 stars until a (hopefully) future patch resolves some of the technical issues that still interrupt the game play from time to time.

Summary: Beautiful but a snooze..
Review: Great looking but not for everyone. You'll need a LOT of time, patience and a fast computer. In fact, unless you're using at least a 2GHz processor, 512 MB of ram, and a graphics card like the ATI 9600 Pro or NVidia 5700 Ultra, don't bother.

Summary: So tedious that I can't continue it
Review: I've not had any of the technical problems that others seem to be complaining about. Yes, the scenery is beautiful but the gameplay is TEDIOUS. No thrill or awe here. I was well over the breathtaking scenery by the time I solved the first puzzle. Frustrated and bored is the best way I can describe how I felt. My 2 other family members agree and don't want to continue with it either. The positive 5 star reviews that I've read here sound pretty fake. Someone please shoot me if I have to suffer through any more of this game.

Summary: bad game play
Review: This game has very poor controll and nominal graphics. I had posted a review along with several other people about the many problems with this game, but amazon keeps purging the reviews. At one time this game had over a dozen reviews with many complaints, but they all have been removed from the page.

Summary: Creme de la Creme
Review: Those people on Macs should not give URU a one star rating out of disgruntlement. The writers and manufacturer have to do what is financially expedient: PCs greatly outnumber Macs and Cyan is not currently able to issue a Mac edition because they don't have the money to do so, as one reviewer pointed out. URU is beautiful, intelligent and very classy. You get so immersed in it you practically expect to see huge mushrooms sptouting up in your backyard when you return to reality. URU is way above the ordinary video game experience, don't miss it!
