Summary: Great for new Players!
Review: City of heroes is a MMOPG game--that is a massively multi player online game. This is the second version with the original game and hero creator along with the first two updates. It features special powers/effects that are not available to players who purchased the original.

In city of heroes, you get to create your own hero--choosing its archtype (blaster, defender, scrapper, tank, controller) and its powers. You then create a hero (which is very fun)--choosing its sex (male/female/huge male) and picking out its costume. This is one of the best parts of the game!

After that, you get to enter the world of paragon city. You start off weak but progress or level as you kill bad guys, save citizens, finish missions. The great thing is that you get to team up with other heroes to do this or you can solo. As you level you get access to more powers/capes and enhancements which can strengthen the powers you have already.

City of heroes was the first online game that i played and it was simple to learn and to master. I have played for about 3 months and i am never bored. There are many opportunities for grouping and joining larger super groups that ensure you always have someone to team with. The tech support is very good as well...the few times i had trouble, there was always a GM around to help me out.

This version has several new features:
--A VIP badge- which would be essential for those who are badge collectors, but has no new power.
--The invisible cape of 4 winds
--new powerslide power: which moves like superspeed but looks like you are surfing down the street, very cool.

For those already having the original game, i don't think that there is much newer content in this version to warrent the extra money..unless you are like me and have to have every badge! (still working on that illusionist one if there are any interested heroes!!!)

But for new players- get this version!

Destiny Morna
level 48 defender

Summary: Great game, graphics, but not many options :/
Review: City of Heroes is the first MMORPG I've ever fallen in love with. I fall outside the usual demographic for this type (or most types) of video games, being female, married, and over 30. The game keeps expanding, both in playability and in backstory.

This new version is really aimed at new players, although if you are a seriously addicted hero, and you have the $50 to spare, powerslide is superhero skateboarding (try it around a tram station) and the transparent Cape of the Four Winds works nicely with almost any costume. The little non-game extras on the DVD are available online, and unless there are hidden extras that will appear as you rise in level (and I don't think there are), there isn't a LOT of reason to buy this disc -- unless you just HAVE to have the Statesman Heroclix toy.

Again, a lot of fun, but not necessary to playing and enjoying the game. But you will see me powersliding around tram stations!

Summary: Absolutely disgusting
Review: I have been playing this game for 2-3 months now. In issue 3, which is the latest patch for this game, NCSoft has drastically reduced the powers of certain player types making them worthless. NCSoft should have done this at the beginning of the game not at the middle of the game. I played 2 months to develop to the level I am in & now I realized that my archetype has become less powerful & more or less useless. I am a regeneration scrapper & they have taken down my shield in issue 3. I contacted NCSoft but they said they cannot do anything about it. Now If I had known in the begining that such changes will be done for this archetype, I would not have chosen this archetype. This is not ethical game development where one day NCSoft wakes up & drastically reduces the power of one archetype. They have absolutely no consideration for player who play a particular archetype & how their decision will affect these players. I spent so much time in developing this character and now I find my powers reduced making my character partially useless.& the response which I got from NCSoft is that I should not complain to them about this but should post it in the forum so that various members can discuss. What jerks?? This company does not know how to develop games, & one fine day they may wake up & cut other features, reduce features of an archetype etc., without even considering the players who are playing it. So there is absolutely no point in playing this game.

Further more in this game, there is only one thing to do kill..kill...kill -> get xp at a very very... slow rate -> level up. & this becomes very frustrating when a player is between 37-49. I am also playing World of Warcraft right now & tp tell you very frankly World of Warcraft is WOW. Players have got thousands of things to do & explore besides killing.Well, I will be switching over to World of Wwarcraft permanently.

Summary: A good game gets even better!
Review: I love this game. New in this version is Powersliding, which is a real fun travel power your character starts with, which is somewhat faster than Sprint.

The graphics are phenomenal, and I even enjoy the game music. It's become my addiction as I try out different characters and work on building them up and fighting crime in Paragon City.

The one down side to the game is that it's a pay subscription to play ($15.00/month), but the moderators and tech support are so great that it's worth it in my opinion. Servers are maintained on a regular basis as well.

Summary: Fun game, especially for playing 1-2 hours at a time
Review: I've tried out several online multi-player games since I got dsl and I've never felt like playing them for more than few months due to the massive time investment and studying they seem to require. City of Heroes breaks away from that routine. I've been playing since April and I'm still having a great time. They've stripped away all the resource gathering and economy simulation stuff and just left the player to concentrate on foiling the schemes of villains. I went ahead an d bought 6 months of subscription time up front and got the price break on the monthly fee. The game adds new places, new bad guys, and new interesting things every 2-3 months, so the game keeps on getting better.

There have been some wild stuff that the company has been testing on the "Test Server" that a prior reviewer referred to. Those experimental changes have already been tweaked back and aren't going to be transferred to the Live servers where it counts. Every online multi-player game does tweaks on character abilities from time to time as the game evolves, and the designers for this game have been doing a good job of communicating with the players before changes are implemented. I feel like a buddy is running this game for me. There is another major update to the game in January coming and the testing reports from players have been intriguing to say the least.

Anyway, give the game a try if you're interested in playing your own superhero. I wound up shelving my Playstation for this puppy. The first month's subscription comes with the game.

Summary: Fantastic game!
Review: While my husband and I both enjoy computer and video games, it is very rare that we find one that BOTH of us enjoy, much less will play together. City of Heroes (CoH)is definitely the game for us! There are many cities to explore and the range is virtually endless. (...) there are substories to help make gameplay more enjoyable. Along with that, there are humorous and fun emotes to make chatting a great time...especially in the dance club.

While it's true that at certain levels gaining XP becomes extremely difficult, this does not detract from the game, in my opinion, since gaining Experience Points (XP) is not the only point of the game. Give it a try and enjoy it for what it is.
