Rating: Summary: I wish I could give it ZERO or NEGATIVE stars! Review: I recently bought a new Dell computer (P4, 1.8GHz, 256MB RAM, 80 Gig HD) with Windows ME installed on it. Yes, I spent a fortune on this computer. NO, it was not worth it!First of all, I have to stare at the blue Windows ME screen for 5 MINUTES waiting for it to boot up. I have 98 on my old computers (from 1995, and one from 1999) they both boot in less than 30 seconds. (And YES, I do have all of that extra stuff in start up menu - msconfig - turned off). I am running at 90% free resourses. I have a Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart P1000 printer and a HP 5200C Scanner. I have not been able to successfully load the software from either one into Windows ME. NOTHING WORKS. I can get both items to do the BASICS, but I did not spend lots of extra money on the printer and scanner to just do the basics. I have even downloaded drivers from HP's site for each product for ME, still no success. I get at least 5 runtime errors a day with this OS. And, I am only on the computer a max of 2 hours a day. I just can't use a computer if my hardware will not work. I have called Dell tech support multiple times over these issues. Each tech invariable states Windows ME incapatibility issues with hardware and software not made exculsively for Windows ME. Basically, this product is terrible - and, since I have to wait up to 2 hours to get support from Dell on every single issue, I have decided to return my entire Dell system - ME and ALL!!
Rating: Summary: Terrible Experience -- Shame on Microsoft Review: My experience with Windows ME has been horrible -- and I see no improvement on the horizon, short of going back to Windows 98 or paying Microsoft more money for yet another Windows release. In four months of use (ME came with a new Dell PC), I've suffered two major crashes that service technicians attributed to ME. There seems to be some glitch between ME and Word 2000, which also came with the computer. Further, as an AOL subscriber, there is some kind of incompatabilty betwen ME and AOL. Get used to waiting to get quick access to AOL and don't be surprised when you're given the news that AOL has disconnected you. A problem with AOL? No, when I revert to Windows 98, using the same AOL access telephone numbers, no problem. I'm profoundly disappointed with Microsoft for apparently rushing to dump a flawed operating system on an unsuspecting public. Equally disappointed with Dell for distributing this horrible software. Where are the lemon laws for software?
Rating: Summary: After nearly a year of using this Review: After nearly a year of using ME, I am sick and tired of it. At least six times, I have had to uninstall it and reinstall it after the system restore calendar and main help section have vanished from view. The last time I had to do this was this week and within a minute or two of establishing that the missing parts were there, they disappeared after opening MusicMatch to hear a cd. Whenever these two sections vanish, the send page function of the email program sends dat attachments instead of viewable pages. I am not alone in experiences these problems. I have talked to, at least, a dozen others who have had the same problems with thes turkey. When I first install it, it caused my computer to stop shutting down properly and I had to take it to the store where I bought it and have them put it in. This is a very poor product. It doesn't start up any faster than Windows 98 and really doesn't seem worth the trouble I have experience in the past year. The System Restore is one of the "vaunted" new features, but if it isn't available what so good about it? Complains to Microsoft are no good because they won't take responsible for an OEM. Complains to the computer company that put the OS in the computer are no good because they say Microsoft is responsible. I think I'll hire a lawyer and sue Microsoft for false advertising.
Rating: Summary: No wailing and gnashing of teeth here Review: My wife and I recently acquired a new PC laptop to replace our aged and decrepit tower. The decision to be made beforehand was what operating system to have the vendor install - Windows 2000 or ME. About the latter, my computer savvy brother said, "It's a cruel hoax by Microsoft". Moreover, a friend working in my employer's Information Services Department cautioned, "Don't get ME under any circumstances." So, exercising the good sense that's guided me for half a century, I got the laptop with ME anyway. Now, I gotta tell ya. I'm a not computer nerd by inclination or training. I don't set up networks like my brother does, or do software beta testing like my ISD bud. I need my wife to explain to me terms like "USB", "SCSI", "firewall", and the difference between "CD-RW" and "CD-ROM". Hey, I just want to be able to turn on the productivity tool and complete the task at hand, whether it's in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook. So, from that eminently pragmatic vantage point, I can say that ME works JUST DANDY, thank you very much. And, wow, does it ever load fast without all that DOS gibberish! After reading the other opinionated reviews concerning ME, it's evident one either loves or loathes the software. I sense, however, that those in the latter group likely upgraded to ME from a previous version, while those in the former camp started from a fresh install. Perhaps it's because my shiny new toy was born with ME that I can give the OS a "thumbs up." God bless Bill Gates, ME and Microsoft.
Rating: Summary: not without problems Review: I've had my share of problems with this operating system. Obviously the best attribute of this software is the price, but it's incompatible with many professional applications. I would've bought windows 2000 if it had been available on the store shelves, but it was sold out.
Rating: Summary: Should be renamed Microsoft CRASH Review: If you want a more stable OS, go with NT or 2000. Maybe even Linux or Unix if you really want great stability. Let's start a bit earlier.... CRASH '98 was a lot better than CRASH '95, but only when it was up and running. '98 had a lot of startup AND shutdown problems. I downloaded a few patches from Microsoft's site, but nothing helped. When it was up and running, it did stay up most of the time, even with some serious multi-tasking going on. It only crashed on me a few times during the year or so I had it. But the dreaded reboots would get me just about every time, and just about destroy my whole system. So I upgraded to CRASH Me. Now I have no more startup problems, but still have stutdown issues. And I get visited by the friendly blue screen of death again! It is a multi-tasking nightmare, even with 512 megs of RAM, and even using Microsoft stuff (Access, Excel, etc). Stick with NT for now, then maybe if Linux gets better go with that platform. Because it's ovious Microsoft isn't.
Rating: Summary: One star for many of these reviews! Review: I've just signed for a new computer with ME installed and your reviews have scared me! They wouldn't be so scary if they were more specific: what processor speed do you have? how many megs of RAM? what size is your hard drive? which digital camera did you try to plug in? which scanner? All of these factors could influence your experience with ME. I can understand the sputtering indignation, so One Star goes to bloody old Gates-soft for continuing to make arrogant and user friendless products and then leaning on manufacturers to sell them. But One Star also goes to any number of reviewers here who are furious (of course!) but unhelpful to the rest of us...
Rating: Summary: How does Microsoft do it? Review: Wow. Those guys with the angry 0/5 reviews aren't hotheads who don't know how to use their computers, they're right! It's amazing how a company that produces such buggy products already has me waiting for their next one... how DO they do it? To give a few more details, I experience one or two crashes a day, 90% of which are from microsoft programs (Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, Word, PowerPoint) Oh, and the 5/5 rating was just to stand out from the crowd -- I hope I didn't raise the overall rating too much.
Rating: Summary: Not bad if you learn how to use Review: I think alot of the people writing these really bad reveiws on Me , have not taken the time to learn the solutions to there problems within ME. Using your MSCONFIG to adjust your startup and eliminate programs you dont need running at startup , is a good start. Increasing your RAM , makes ME much more stable , a inexpensive upgrade thats good if your a gamer or use alot of graphic editing software. When I frist recieved ME preloaoded on a new system I purchased I was about to switch to 98 . However after the RAM upgrade , adjusting the system config utility I have yet to have a problem with Windows Me since !
Rating: Summary: horrible upgrade, only if you have too Review: many problems with this slow,os. either stay with windows 98 or upgrade to windows 2000 professional, much more stable, then all of them
