Rating: Summary: Instability and weird error messages Review: Windows ME came with my computer and I've had lots of problems with it...it crashes much more frequently than it should and every time I turn on my PC, Norton Anti-Virus pops up with an error message about "suspicious script" which I think is actually a glitch in Windows. The worst was when I installed a scanner and the windows explorer program stopped working altogether...I had to use system recovery and lost all my files and programs. Ouch. The guy who works at the computer help center at my university advised me to switch to Windows 2000 as soon as possible because ME is notoriously bad.
Rating: Summary: M.E. vs. XP Review: I have both Windows Millennium Edition and XP on my computer. However, I use M.E. more. It has most of the options XP has, like Media Player 7, Internet Explorer 5.1, and many others. I play LOTS of games, and some games are not compatible with XP. M.E. is based on Windows 98, witch most games are desigend for. Not into games? Think about this, most cameras, CD drives, and other hardware need an updated driver to work with XP. What kind of ... is that! :( If you're looking for an Operating System that won't have you spending hours searching for downloads, go with Millennium Edition:)
Rating: Summary: Could be better, but it's come a long way since WIN 95/3.1 Review: I have WIN ME on a Compaq 5WV280 system and while I have had a few problems with it in the beginning, after downloading some updated drivers and dat file, I found the crashes pretty much stopped. The only real problem that I've had with WIN ME is that it won't let me play my older DOS based games (Unearthed Aranca - D&D/AD&D games) Other than that, it's worked just fine for me, especially since more and more software and hardware manufacturers are starting to support it.
Rating: Summary: Not a bad Windows Operating System Review: Ok, first I'd like to start off saying I have been using Windows ME for about two years. And I have to say I'm quite pleased with it. The Internet Explorer, Media Player 7.0, the system restore feature, and the other enhancements have worked well for me. Those of you who experience crashes should try updating your drivers for your hardware. Secondly to those users who say they have trouble doing scandisk and defrag, do it in safe mode! Also ME does have does, it's just hidden. You can access dos programs including the dos scandisk by useing a Windows ME startup disk which you can create in the add/remove programs section in the control panel on the startup disk tab. The only thing I'd recommend is that you have at least 128mb of RAM, and a RAM optimizer program to help clear out RAm when it gets too low. Also visit the Windows update site, there are fixes for some of the problems you people are describing, and with the updates in place you will find ME more stable. Personally I love it much better than Windows 98, it crashes less often. If you get a ram optimizer program, your computer wont slow down as quickly and you wont have to reboot as often. But of course at this point I'd just recommend getting Windows XP or 2k, because they are more stable than the 9x core. However, for a 9x code, Windows ME is a decent!
Rating: Summary: Inspired me to buy a Mac....... Review: There are too many problems with this OS to count. Not to mention the other Microsoft programs that come with it, like WinDVD and Win Media player, which both stopped functioning 6 months after I bought my pc. There are problems with restarts and shut downs, as well as the occasional freeze-up. Although there are some handy new features, they definitely don't outweigh the many and frequently occuring problems. Microsoft, like usual, fails miserably. Go buy a Mac.
Rating: Summary: Love it! Review: Years ago, I bought a computer(s) that already had WindowsMe installed. I will be buying a new computer and will purchase WindowsMe to install... instead of using WindowsXP. I haven't had any problems with WindowsMe. I love the system restore...especially when someone in the household makes changes to the computers! I can just go back to a previous restore point and all works. To the person that said they have a difficult time running Scan Disk and Defrag.......I have always run those programs in Safe Mode. Safe Mode runs with a limited amount of drivers (not a bunch of stuff running in the background)so the scanning and defrag goes MUCH faster. I also have older printers, scanners, etc....and they all work with WindowsMe. For example, prices are cheaper if you wait until a printer isn't top of the line at the moment. That means buying an older printer will be compatible. If every time I wanted to buy a new computer and could afford to replace EVERYTHING...printer, scanner, monitor, etc., then I would probably upgrade to WindowsXP. Since I don't replace everything at one time...WindowME works for me!
Rating: Summary: TRASH!!! Review: I bought a comp with windows me on it and tried to use nortons anit-virus 2002 without realizing it has an in compatability problem, now my whole hard drive is fried!! THANK YOU MICROSOFT!!!if you can avoid it, do it.
Rating: Summary: do not buy Review: Windows me is so unstable when I was in setup I would get errors. When finally got in windows I was getting errors like it was a joke. I personaly think windows me should have stayed beta because it could have been better than the one out now. It is so unstable and unreliable. When I first installed it I went to windows update there must have been over 20 critical updates already regarding windows me. So I recomend everyone to get on the nt kernel becuase 95-me was a JOKE! nt kernel is so stable. I recomend windows 2000 or xp they are serious when it comes to computing.
Rating: Summary: continued Review: I want to add a few things. Again, I don't know if this is a fault of Windows ME, or what, but at some point, my CD burner stopped fuctioning. It always said some conflict occured. It's hard to say if the OS is bad, if the disc is defective, or if you don't know how to configure things. I had a problem with the video card, and DVD ROM, but it was configuration, not the OS. Windows ME is a very nice software, and it beats Windows 95, and perhaps even 98. I don't know anything about Win 98 SE, or 2000, XP. I've heard horrible reviews about XP. Try out Windows ME.
Rating: Summary: How did Microsoft dare... Review: ...to release such a bad operating system. When I ordered my brand new computer with Windows Millennium Edition, I actually thought that is was a good idea. Oh boy, I was so wrong. The thing that persuaded me to buy it was the multimedia home-oriented goodies that after all proved to be totally useless. Believe me, you don't want to spend 200 dollars in this OS only for Windows Media Player and the Movie Maker and stuff, the latter is awfully horrible. This OS is, as I'm sure you've read, the worst Windows ever released (and that will ever be released!). I'm going to tell you about some of my problems with WinME. For some reason, it just has an EXTREMELY serious unstability problem. And I really mean that. And even though boot time is fast, I admit that (like 20 seconds or so), I'd rather wait 2 minutes in boot time but not have my PC crash about once every 30 minutes. For real. I find myself stuck hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del way much more than I should, and sometimes, the reset button as well. The networking code in ME is horrible. I've had lots of problems with my cable connection because of the operating system. Another serious problem is the system's extreme ability to get corrupted. And I am not talking about viruses here. Just install some hardware and see how ME becomes your worst nightmare. Just to show you the size of the problem, I've been forced to reformat my hard drive 4 times in the last six months. That is an awful lot. Windows Me also seems to have a big problem with managing memory, and I find my computer freezing a lot with few applications open with a 256 MB RAM memory. I've had problems with applications like Macromedia's Flash and Shockwave players, Norton AntiVirus and Norton Utilities and I couldn't install DirectX 8 the first time I tried (I had to reformat my hard drive later). The System Restore program, which indeed seems like a nice idea and has been improved lots in XP, is totally useless. It won't return your PC to an actual working status, and when you are able to revert your computer to a previous moment, the saved copy is just way too corrupted to solve the problem. So... a nice idea, but idea anyways. This OS was targeted for home use. But it's the other way around. Forget about flawless gaming, downloading stuff from the internet and using your MP3 player or your digital camera. This OS is the maximum expression of unstability and unreliability. It's plain crap. Simple as that. I really really recommend you to save yourself the headaches, the rants, and to prevent losing years of life by NOT buying Windows Millennium Edition. Don't get fooled by the pretty packaging and the "fancy" multimedia apps. Don't pay attention to those that say that Windows ME works great. If it does... they have been extremely lucky. Just read most of the reviews and see for yourself. On the other hand, I do recommend you to buy Windows XP if you can get the extra bucks. Or get Windows 2000. If you can't, then just stay with your Windows 98 SE or downgrade to it. But, stay 30 feet away from Windows ME. It's not worth it. Believe me. I've read several reviews and it seems that all Dell PCs won't be saved from WinME's evil wrath. That is my case, too. Pretty odd. I read in one of the reviews that you're making Dell pay for the WinXP upgrade. Seems like a good idea. SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Windows Millennium Edition poses a serious threat to your mental health, and should be avoided at all times.
