Review: You couldn't pay me to keep Windows ME on my machine. I was unfortunate enough to have it rammed down me throat as pre-installed software on my new Dell Inspiron 5000e, and have been going nuts ever since. In the three weeks that I have owned the machine, I have spent more of my time on the phone getting help trying to solve compatablity problems than I have spent actually using my computer.

I estimate that I have wasted over fifteen hours in a failed attempt to make this OS do that which it cannot: run the software that I wish to run, on the hardware which I have installed. Twenty percent of my existing software will not run with Windows ME. I will NOT purchase a new library of software each time there is a new "upgrade" for my OS, and you shouldn't have to either.

I have found something positive in my whole experience with Windows ME. The wonderful people at Dell have understood my pain and are sending me a replacement hard drive; Windows 2000 installed. My sympathy goes out to those of you who have spent their hard earned money on the Windows ME Virus.

Summary: Powerful, yet simple.
Review: This is by far my favorite Windows. Once you get the hang of navigating the user interface (which won't take long) you'll notice that this is easily the most powerful Windows. Despite an almost cutesy appearance, no prior Windows matches it in features, speed, reliability, or ease of use. After going through the nightmare that is Windows 98 (the most crash-prone software I have ever used) I got this OS as a last resort. I was more than pleased. While the extra features probably don't justify the price as an upgrade (unless you just have the money to spend), I would recommend looking for it pre-loaded in a new computer.

Summary: extremely poor compatibility
Review: I bought the computer from Dell, so I don't have to bother to install it. However, the installation of other hardwares was like being grilled in Hell. My PC camera, my scanner, my printer, and lots of other drives are not compatible with WinME. The worse is most of manufactures do not have WinME compatible drivers; or they just claim their drivers are compatible, and they "should" work...

Since my computer is still within 30 days after purchase, I am considering to change it to Win98 SE, I feel that's the most stable edition.

Summary: Windows Me? Try Windows 98 SP2.
Review: Okay, I have to admit, it really looks like Microsoft took Windows 98 SE, and added a few upgrades, like Movie Maker, WMP7, a few new drivers, and slapped a new name on it. It crashes even more than the disappointing 98 versions.

You really need to consider if it's worth buying Me. I would reccomend sticking with your current operating system, upgrading to Windows 2000 (MUCH better), or waiting for the final release of Windows Whister (A.K.A Windows 2001, Windows NT 5.1 and Windows.NET 1.0), which will be Microsoft's first consumer-targeted NT version.

Forget about me.

Summary: A Noticeable Improvement
Review: After a hitch free install, Windows ME has yet to give me any major headaches after around 2 months of use now (got a copy from Tech Data before the official release date). My system is a Duron 700, 128 MB RAM, Asus A7V, Geforce2 MX, SB Live!, and IBM 75GXP 30 GB ATA-100 Drive. Aside from some minor DUN problems (most of which were likely caused by an ISP upgrade and a flaky winmodem), Windows ME has yet to be the nightmare it has been for other users. I did nothing special, just simply did a clean install on an empty drive, and have had no problems. I admit I haven't stressed it out much, but I would consider my computer use that of the average net/game junkie, so I've been somewhat surprised reading the other reviews. Maybe I just got lucky with a configuration that WinME can handle with no hassle. From my experience I can say for me it is more stable than Win98B (I have yet to experience a B.S.O.D., and only a couple of random lockups...pretty good for Windows, IMO)

Summary: More bells and whistles
Review: A little over priced for what you get. It has alot more bells and whistles, like active start menu, easier digital camera and scanner option, and system restore and it's more stable then '98. Cosmetically, it looks better than 98, and has an improved support feature. It runs a little slower, but you can easily tweak it for speed. It can be kind of tricky setting up for the first time, but once you get it set up, it's a good OS for a new computer, but alot of money for what the upgrade offers.

Summary: Windows DE (Disappointing Edition)
Review: During the installation process for Windows ME (I was upgrading my laptop from 98) I was presented with a myriad of screens telling me how great Windows ME was and how much change was influenced by "customer requests" and issues from their support department.

Ironically, after the install completed and machine rebooted, Windows ME greeted with the infamous "blue screen of death".

After spending a couple of hours using the diagnostic tools packaged with ME and troubleshooting the problem, I was finally able to get my system up and running.

After using ME for a couple days, here are the cold hard facts as I see them. This is a patch to 98, this is not an upgrade. It contains a lot of multimedia extras that are available from Microsoft's download site. The OS performance was not noticeably improved to me in any area. The startup process seemed faster by maybe 5 seconds tops on my 400mhz Pentium.

The price of ME hardly justifies the added functionality that a previous Win98 user gains.

Summary: Highly Recommend for Eveyone
Review: I just built the computer and I wanted to start out fresh, so I went for Windows ME full version. I've had bad experiences with upgrades, putting the new software over top the old. All I can say about this is "bad idea" I had that problem upgrading from 95 to 98. Once I formatted the hard drive and started fresh the problems went away. Ok lets get back to Windows ME. If you're going from 98 Second addition, you're not going to see much difference. But for those who are starting out new it's great. The drivers supplied with the software took care of everything. Following the directions made everything a snap. The networking wizard feature made hooking up with the other computer a breeze. If you're not afraid to tackle a fresh install I would say this is the operating system you want. All the information you need is in the box.
