Summary: The Best OS out there.
Review: Anyone who tells you all Microsoft software is junk and is full of bugs is full of hot air. They obviously haven't tried this OS. I'll be the first to admit that all of the Windows 9x varieties have problems, which is why I upgraded. As for Windows 2000, I've been running it for quite a while and it's rock solid. I've got a small peer-to-peer network running in my house, all running Windows 2000. System hangups are few and far between (no more than any other OS). Every piece of hardware and software I've thrown its way has been fully compatible. USB support is terrific. Many of the devices I've installed didn't even require a manufacturer driver disc; Windows installed them by itself.

If you're shopping around for an OS and you're looking for something Windows based, I think 2000 is the best way to go. '95 and '98 are too buggy, and as for Windows Me, I've never used it so I can't recommend it. For now, I will not be upgrading to Windows XP. I don't like the control Microsoft will have over how many times you install it. Until they change that or until they come out with another OS that doesn't do that, I will be using 2000.

Summary: Probably The Best Os Than The Millenium Edition!
Review: First of all, I'm not paid by Microsoft to say good things about this particular product. Secondly, after some rigorous testing product, I'd like to highlight the following. Windows 2000 Professional is the best OS since NT 4.0, for the time being that is. If you are thinking about going to the ME version, you'll find that this OS won't crash that often(or at all!) and doesn't take much resources of your PC. To properly run Windows 2000 Professional, you just need at least 64MB of RAM. But, if you have 196MB of RAM and above, then this OS will perform just nice! Also, this OS, in my opinion, runs best alongside with Windows 98SE, which I'm doing it on my PC(just in case Windows 98SE crashes, I still have the highly reliable Windows 2000)! And...oh yes, this OS is optimized for the internet. That means, if you have an internet connection, Windows 2000 makes your surfing much faster than your average Windows 98SE/ME version. Pretty cool, huh?! Not forgotting to mention that this OS is also highly recommend for home use.

Calling all PC-savvy users! This is one "bloody-marvellous" operating system that you can't afford to miss! Two thumbs up for Windows 2000 Professional! And lastly, if you all are wondering, my PC is a 500MHz AMD K-6 2, 196MB PC100 SDRAM and 10GB Seagate HDD and running both OSs. What else can I say? Windows 2000 Professional: Simply the best!

Summary: On a Compaq Presario 1900T
Review: I am extremely pleased with this product! The upgrade was easy, the OS handles multitasking more smoothly than anything I've previously experienced.

Quite surprisingly, my laptop does not heat up like it did with every other Windows OS. The Power Management features are outstanding.

The only downside seems to be with associated third party software and drivers. My Lexmark Z11 (lowgrade printer) does not print worth a...well, you know...under Windows 2000 Pro. My BackPack external CD-RW ocassionally disappears and the printer interface is useless but I had the same trouble with other Windows OS's and I don't attribute these problems to Windows- simply poor compatability on the part of the product manufacturers.

Windows 2000 Professional is a Must have for the Home/Office user. Dual boot and partition your drive and use Windows ME or XP OS's for multimedia applications because W2KP is NOT designed to function optimally in this area. Windows XP will be designed SPECIFICALLY for the multimedia experience.

Summary: The Server solution but not the client
Review: I have been using Windows 2000 at work for about 8 months now and warn anyone installing it on their desktop PC. This is an excellant Server solution (although there are still bugs) but I have the following points for antone thinking it will solve their problems for NT4/98 desktop users.

1) It hogs more resources. Even on a P450 my P200 with 95 runs faster! Its the great debate - Upgrade your hardware to make the sofwater quicker and the newer software runs slower! You need AT LEAST 64 meg RAM. I have 128 and it still runs low on virtual memory every now and again.

2) There are compatablilty problems with other software. Teamlinks 4 has problems with notification, Lotus Notes and parts of IE5 go wrong too.

3) Lack of game support, Direct X dosen't work properly, yet. Version 6 and 7 wont install.

4)It still crashes as often as my machine used to. Infact probably a bit more.

5) It takes longer to boot and shut down

6)Oh yes one ther thing - my install takes up 800Meg

True it has got more user friendly but you will have to upgrade your hardware. Dont even try running it on less than a PII with 128RAM. And if you want to play Half Life - forget it!

Home users stick with 98 if you have experience and Work users, its not worth the hassle upgrading from NT4.

WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT RELEASE WHEN HOPEFULLY SOME OF THE BUGS ARE IRONED OUT!

Summary: the best OS from Microsoft
Review: I have used all operating systems Microsoft has released since Windows 3.1 (except Win ME), and this is my favorite. Windows 3.1, 95 and NT are way too obsolete, so W2K's real "competitors" are Win98, 98SE and XP. Win98 and Win98SE start up much faster than W2K, but the former are infinitely less stable, causing the computer to crash all the time. WinXP and W2K seem to be quite similar, but W2K takes up less space and appears to be a tad more stable.

Summary: Windows 2000 A LEAP ahead of the rest....
Review: I was simply astonished when I reformatted my harddrive and installed a "clean" install of windows 2k. All of my hardware was fully supported and I did not experience any software problems that required anything more than a simple driver update from the products respective website. The features and stability of this OS continue to amaze me. I do a great deal graphical development, as well as programming, with programs like 3d studio max R4, Poser 4, and a few other RAY-tracing programs that can be very taxing on a systems resources and, often times, crash inferior OS's like - all but win2k and linux, and other UNIX based systems. Also an avid gamer I find this OS runs my games with great fluidity and I have never had incompatibility problems or crashing-due-to-error problems (aside from games that are almost outdated on even win98). This OS is a must get for any of you out there who wish to compute in a hassel-free, crash free environment. Pick it up today!

Summary: Only bad if you are anti-Microsoft
Review: I'm an OS freak and I've tried and tested everything from Linux (Red Hat, Suse...), BeOs, to all Windows flavors... Linux is fun for geeks (like me) but not for normal people--did someone say Windows 2000 takes up 800 meg (which is nonsense)? Well, the "free" Red Hat took up more than 1 gig and was ridiculous compared to Win2000 considering user-friendliness, look, power, and simply getting things done. Compared to Win95/98: Win2000 is recommended for home users (goodbye hangs and crashes), unless you play a lot of games designed for Win95/98. Stable, secure, and a lot faster (same Internet connection performs slower in Win98). User-friendiless: I'm not a MS shareholder, but you have to give them one thing: they know how to design things so you get them done easy and fast. Geeks, hear this: compared to WinNT, a much better command-line here! Finally able to copy ACL's with xcopy /o. A lot of the "Unixy" power here. Stability: tried to crash it and Win2000 didn't give in.

Minus: for writing CD's, I use Win98. No crashes, but the occasional hang with RW-CD's (using Adaptec software). Setup is easy; installing Service Pack 1 gave no trouble at all. Crashes during Internet browsing (common in Win 9x): totally disappeared. Win2000 recognized all my hardware first time around. Conclusion: not cheap, but worth the price compared to the geeky open-source stuff.

Summary: Worth replacing peripherals for
Review: I've been using W2K since 1999 (MSDN Beta 3) and bought the whole OS in early 2000. I've been working with it since and has been one of the best decisions I've ever made when it comes to stable OSs. It's a great upgrade since it makes things way easier the way they were on NT 4, but it also has its downsides. It's not easy to learn for the average computer user, meaning that you've got to be more aware the way your computer works, although no special training is required (you can learn just by reading thoroughly the help files or finding advice on the net). Sometimes programs crash (although Windows does not), but can leave a fairly unstable environment to work with, and if that happens, well, Windows becomes stupid, and maybe, you'll have to reboot. UNIX based systems are a better choice, but in a growing Windows world, this one is a good headstart into the corporate computing environment.

Oh, BTW, take your eyes off Windows XP (either Home or Pro). It'll only slow you down. Better get this one.

Summary: I only have one fault with this OS...
Review: If you're a gamer, you will be disappointed with this OS, because it is not designed to support many popular Win9x games. Happily, this is the ONLY drawback to Windows 2000. In every other respect, this operating system is excellent! For the first time ever, Microsoft brought a product to market that was solid and reliable from the moment you install it.

A compatibility checker program is included on the installation disk to warn you if you have hardware that lacks Windows 2000 support. If you have a popular computer platform, such as a Dell or Compaq, most (if not all) of the necessary drivers will be setup during the installation.

My computer consulting business depends on a solid and reliable operating system. My laptop came with Windows Me and crashed DAILY! Why Bill Gates pushed Windows Me into production without the same care as Windows 2000 is a mystery and a shame.

Here's the deal...

-If you have Windows 98 and use your machine specifically for business, GET WINDOWS 2000! Don't wait for XP. You will pay a lot for multimedia features that require more memory and processor power.

-If you're into gadgets, music and video games don't bother with Windows 2000. Windows 9x/Me will play your titles much better than Windows 2000. You can also wait for Windows XP Home or Professional editions, which Microsoft claims has twice the software compatibility of Windows 2000 and is backward compatible all the way back to DOS. In addition, you will get the stability of Windows NT with your gaming and office work. Bear in mind that XP is for computers less than three years old. Make sure you meet the hardware requirements!

-If your machine is on the older side, (Pentium II 200Mhz or slower) you will not be happy with the XP upgrade. To play games on these systems, I recommend staying with Windows 95/98. Windows 2000 will run on these computers provided the system has at least a Pentium 166 and 64MB of RAM.

Think of Windows 2000 as an all business, no nonsense OS. You get limited multimedia support and a rock solid platform to run your programs. Windows XP will be a combination of the multimedia and plug and play ease of Windows 98 and the stability of the Windows NT architecture. I've read nothing but glowing reviews of XP and intend to experiment with it on my next PC.

Another benefit...
In addition to running on older systems, Windows 2000 Professional was designed specifically for laptops. Those of you running Windows NT4 on a laptop are familiar with the headaches of data corruption and driver installations. Win2000 was designed for laptops. Advanced power management is built in and the hibernation mode is an excellent convenience. I save my work, close the screen and pack the machine in my bag. The computer stores RAM on disk and shuts off. Wake up time is less than one minute on my Dell Inspiron.
