Summary: Big improvement over 95, if you need it.
Review: If you have Win95 and you are happy, you can probably skip this upgrade. But if you are running low in disk space, or want better driver support, USB support, more stability, 98 is a good choice. 2000 isn't here yet and should be considered a replacement for Win 9x not an upgrade. As for the 'experts', the statement that 98 is just 95 with Internet Explorer is plain wrong. If your system clock falls behind, you have a hardware problem.

Summary: A HUGE MISTAKE - NOT EVEN WORTH 1 STAR
Review: This was the worst thing I could have installed. Once installed, my DVD player no longer worked. I can play CDs but not DVDs. I tried uninstalling SE, but it leaves residual files that CANNOT be removed. If you do attempt the uninstall, then the DVD worked, but other programs don't. Microsoft and Gateway refuse to help with the issue. Gateway claims I purchased it 3rd party from Mircosoft (! ) and Microsoft says it's Gateway's responsibility. So now I have a $3000 machine with a useless DVD. Take my advice: DO NOT use this software. The testing was poor, and the changes that do work are not worth the effort. Unless you want to FTP from Explorer, you don't need IE5. And at least your equipment will continue to work.

Summary: Another Example of Microsoft Bungling!
Review: I would not recommend this product to anyone. It does nothing but cause my system to crash and other problems to numerous to mention. I am having to convert to another OS in order to resolve this!

Summary: Don't waste your money!
Review: If you must go with Windows, wait for Windows 2000. I bought this Win 98 2nd Edition to fix the bugs in Win 98 1st addition, and I still have some of the same bugs. I leave my computer on all the time and my system clock always falls behind. IT'S NOT WORTH IT!

Summary: The worst OS on the market.
Review: Microsoft Windows undoubtedly is the worst popular OS on the market. It is unstable, unreliable, not secure, and contains the worlds most bugs.

Summary: Long way to go.....
Review: Windows 98 is just Windows 95 bundled with Internet Explorer.

Windows 2000 is Windows NT with Internet Explorer.

Who do they think they're fooling? And they keep whining about innovation....

You are better off with Caldera OpenLinux or picking up an Apple PC running the MacOS. That way you can use Netscape Communicator and see everything the Internet has to offer.....not just the things Microsoft will allow you to see.

If you're stuck on Microsoft products, you're better off just waiting for Windows 2000.

Summary: Wait for Windows 2000
Review: It is a complete waste of money.

Wait for Windows 2000 instead of buying this one.

It seems to be an attempt on the part of Microsoft to fill the gap between now and the launch of Windows2000 which has been delayed.

Summary: You don't need this.
Review: If you have Windows '98 R1, simply go to the MS website and upgrade all your components including IE. There's nothing new in this "upgrade" you can't get for free, legally off the MS website.

Microsoft seems to believe they are "innovators." Perhaps, but it seems to me they've spent a great deal of time (5 years and counting)recycling the same buggy, slow and cumbersome interface they introduced with windows '95. I would say wait and just upgrade to Windows 2000 "consumer", only it'll be the same interface recycled yet again (and mostly 16-bit at that).

Microsoft clearly has the resources to pump out a nuclear aircraft carrier once a week. The only reason they are making YOU suffer through the same bugs and counter-intuitive interface is becuase you have no place else to go and they know it. Don't fail to buy the "upgrade" for windows '98 becuase you don't like Microsoft, refuse to buy it because there's NO VALUE to what you're buying.

Summary: The best thing since sliced bread.
Review: I have started to seriously use Windows with version 3.1, then I used Windows 95 which was a quantum leap of improvement. Windows 98 is more elegant, more stable, fun to use. It is a Godsent whenever you try to add new hardware. When I had to reinstall it, because I had bought a new drive and motherboard, the support service was excellent.

Summary: Expensive bug fix.
Review: For a company that has enough revenue to run a small country, I expect a lot more for an Operating System. Win98 should have been released as free bug fixes to Win95. The products are extremely similar and contain alot of the same core features. If you can get away with using Win95, it is not worth the upgrade.

If you feel pretty confident in your computer skills, buy ReHat Linux!
