Summary: More stability to win ME users
Review: Though there aren't a ton of new feautes that make this the best windows ever. When comparing to windows ME there is. I have had this product since the first day it came out and have never seen a blue screen, something that always plagued me before. I haven't had any big problems, and that is what I call stability, when considering previous windows.

Summary: Wait until drivers are available
Review: As many reviews have stated, Windows XP is a significant step forward in features and ease of use. BUT, there are real problems becasue not all the hardware drivers needed to effectively install Windows XP are available yet. Specifically, drivers are not yet available for my 15 month old HP 8250i CD-RW and my brand new Creative Modem Blaster V.92. The general IDE CD driver that Microsoft provides allows me to read standard software and audio CD's; but without the correct HP specific driver for my CD drive, I cannot read my data back-up CD's nor use the CD drive to burn new CD's. The Microsoft generic V.90 modem driver seems to work OK, but I suspect that once a specific driver for my modem is released; hopefully, I will get a little better performance.

One other problem I discovered is that my Norton 2001 Anti-Virus and Utilities is not compatable with Windows XP--forcing me to buy Norton 2002 Anti-Virus and Utilities. So the (money) that I planned to spend to upgrade to Windows XP grew to (much more).

In spite of these problems, I like Windows XP. My recommedation is to upgrade to XP, but wait 90 days or so until
XP compatible drivers become available.

Summary: Wonderful product but beware !
Review: Windows XP Professional is a wonderful product but beware.
I have a two year old Dell Dimension XPS. I ran out and bought XP Pro thr first day it was available. I checked Dell's site to see if XP was compatable with my system. Dell reccomends that you NOT install XP unless your system is built for it.

Okay, I was stupid. I charged ahead anyway thinking that I could handle all the fixes and upgrades. I began to install by having XP check my compatabilities for me. It gave me a long list of "may not or will not work" items. I still charged ahead.
What a nightmare ! I had many problems finding driver upgrades.
My CDRW wouldn't work. I called Microsoft. They told me to remove the driver for the cdrw and install the upgrade. I paid for the driver upgrade and tried to install it. It would not load because I did not have a qualified product in the system to upgrade from. I tried to install the old driver again so that I could upgrade. XP would not allow me to install it because it would cause instability in my system. This was just one problem.

I uninstalled XP which reinstated my old 98SE. I still had problems because I had changed or removed drivers. I spent hours fixing everything that I screwed up.

I like XP. Even though a lot of my system didn't function. It seemed much more stable than 98. I liked the way it looked and worked. I think it's the best operating system that Microsoft has come up with.

My advice, don't upgrade unless you're willing to do a lot of work and have a lot of skill to make your system function with it. I'm going to buy a newer, faster and more advanced system in a few months and look forward to working in XP.

By the way, Microsoft has agreed to refund my purchase price.

Summary: Dont Be Fooled!
Review: XP Pro is just Win2k with a pretty GUI! Thats it! My school got it the other day. It's not worth the money. Just look at the version number. its 5.1. win2k is 5.0! Plus, (opinion) I find the "Did you buy a pirated product" notice annoying.

Summary: Ignore Uneducated Complaints. Windows XP is GREAT!!!
Review: First, let's define what Windows XP is and is not.

It is NOT an upgrade to Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, nor even Windows Millennium Edition. It IS an updated and enhanced version of Windows 2000 (which is why it is referred to as Windows NT 5.1 since Windows 2000 was Windows NT 5.0)

It is a better operating system. Those of you that have been using the home-user version of Windows (that'd be 95, 98, etc.) have no idea of the performance increase. Windows 2000 was a GREAT platform and Windows XP is simply an improved Windows 2000 with a contemporary and colorful interface thrown on top. If you don't like the new look of Windows XP, well, like most Microsoft products you can choose to view it in Classic Mode.

I have heard the complaints of it being an expensive software package. Before jumping to this conclusion and deciding to stick to Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, or Me please bear in mind: This is an OPERATING SYSTEM. It runs your entire computer from the hardware layer all the way up to the application layer. Did you think it was only going to cost a few dollars? Common sense people. Microsoft had to develop this and has to support this. 95% of the home PCs in the world run Microsoft Operating Systems, that's a LOT of liability to assume and they do it with a REASONABLE cost to the consumers.

If you're worried about your hardware not being compatible. I wouldn't lose sleep over that. ALL my hardware was detected and installed upon initial installation of Windows XP with NO problems or glitches. We've upgraded 20 workstations at work to it and they too experienced NO hardware problems. Yes, some of your hardware (especially the hardware from non-mainstream manufacturers) will not have drivers built into Windows XP nor will the manufacturer have updated drivers. This is NOT Microsoft's fault. They beta tested this platform for MONTHS and MONTHS and some manufacturers simply didn't take the initiative to write new drivers for their hardware. Please note, Windows XP is here, it is being shipped with new PCs, and those hardware manufacturers WILL write new drivers or they will no longer be selling hardware to the home user.

It comes down to Market saturation. Sooner or later you'll have to buy it and upgrade anyway simply because the games and programs you love to use will only work on XP one of these days.

I would most definitely recommend this product to both home users and professionals. It is a well performing operating systems with numerous advantages over previous Microsoft operating systems.

Summary: Windows XP for Hp Pavilion
Review: If you have a Hp Pavilion DO NOT UPGRADE to Windows XP will not work. I started the upgrade from 98 to xp and it gets half the way done and says setup cannot continue because of controller restarting. So I put windows 98se works fine

Summary: Windows XP Home Upgrade
Review: Not only did this product not recognize my modem (after it auto-downloaded from Microsoft using this same modem)it couldn't install it later (even after two hours of phone assist from Microsoft) Nor would this product read either my DVD drive or my CD drive. These three items were all purchased and installed (on Millennium) in the past 12 months. I had to uninstall XP to get back my internet accessabiltity. Don't believe the hype on this product(like I did) - contact Microsoft BEFORE YOU BUY to determine if it is compatable with your current hardware or if you will be forced to replace it to meet the limitations of this product.

Summary: Bad News
Review: I purchased XP as an upgrade to Windows 98 SE and had nothing but trouble in trying to get the bulk of my hardware to work with it. Either the drivers or the software for my Lexmark 5770 printer, Acer flatbed scanner, Viking Components USB Flash Memory Reader, Race Leader Force Feedback Game Controller and Satellite USB Modem all were incompatible with XP. These are all relatively new pieces of hardware, the oldest purchased new about 18 months ago. I was able to get a few of these devices to work with XP (after a considerable amount of effort), but others would not operate at all. My guess is that when all the drivers are made to be compatible with XP that the operating system will work smoothly, but I'm back to using my previous operating system for now. I wish that Microsoft was more forthcoming with information about the difficulty one may have with hardware and software compatibility before I purchased this operating system. I might not have wasted my money.

Summary: By far, Microsoft's best offering of the Windows Platform.
Review: I won't get into a technical review of the actual product, what I will tell you is this:

I'm running on a P3 600Mhz system with 128MB of RAM and I run multiple operating systems off this system; Win 2K Pro and 98 SE. This was by far, the easiest upgrade of a Windows Operating System that I've done to date. The Upgrade Report, an app that examines your system and tells you what applicaitons and drivers are not compatible with XP was invaluable. The second most valuable tool was the Migration Wizard to move all my mail, desktop and app settings over to the new O/S.

Much better than 98 (any flavor) the Network and legacy support is VERY solid and my system was back up on my home network pulling down the latest updates from MS in less than 45 minutes.

Summary: The Best OS yet
Review: I'm not a Microsoft fan, yet I believe that this is the best OS yet. First, let's take a look at some of the problems:
1) Price
2) Compatibility - this should improve over time

But it's advantages:
1) It does everyting Microsoft claims it does
2) Faster load up times
3) Improved stability
4) Those little things which make your computer smarter.

I had to uninstall XP as my CDRW drive was not supported. I now suffer withdrawal symptoms, and I can't wait for the driver to come out.
