Summary: Display Drivers stop working after Upgrade
Review: After upgrading to XP pro, my display drivers stop working. Have spending "chatting" with Miscrosoft Support, but without success. Microsoft blames it on the hardware (OEM issue ). But Miscrosoft support were unable to explain how upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro can cause so much pain !!!

Summary: WARNING!
Review: If computer literacy IQ > 50, do not "upgrade" to XP. It is bad. Nothing is back-compatible and it has no useful features that 98 on up didn't already have. I can think of about a hundred better options, and one of them would be for the whole world to convert to macs. And I'm an 11 year Windows user.

Summary: More MS junk
Review: The majority of computer users can go on using this insecure, unstable, and bloated product. Also, why pay ~$300 for an OS when you can download one for free? I have been using Redhat linux for years, now, with no complaints.
I tried installing XP on another partition on my 1Ghz, 500M RAM Sony Vaio only to take it off again. It was dog slow and, quite frankly, insulting. Another review called it a Fischer-Price toy. How true! The gang in Redmond, WA get to tell you how you are going to use their OS, dumb it down, and you get to pay for the privilege as well. And if you want a feature they don't offer? Too bad; you can't have it unless thousands of other consumers want it as well. So much for innovation and flexibility.
The most troubling thing about Windows is its lack of security. No wonder there is a class action lawsuit against MS for the lack of it. With such a vast majority of PCs running Winows, and its porous security, huge portions of the internet and connected computers are vulnerable to cyber-terrorism. Let's get real: Windows started out as a single-user/single-pc system. It has been hacked to allow networking and multiple users with little thought about securing the system. It was only after 9-11 that Bill Gates decided to make security a priority. Even their security updates are an advertisement of the vulnerabilities that exist within Windows.
Having said all that, I think that MS should be paying me to keep Windows on my computer. This is not a real OS, it is a toy that is better used to run the Game Cube (another inferior product). If I have any real work to do, I will do it in a safer environment that is truly multitasking and multiuser. I will let the other Windows users deal with the headache of another virus attack and subsequent security patch.

Summary: Why do Microsoft bother?
Review: Sorry to gripe, but I have been using XP for a few months on and off now and I am glad I don't own a PC, it kind of reminds me of "Fisherprice My First Computer" - Having struggled with this operating system, with it's freezes and crashes and bad interface I really realised why I did purchase a Macintosh - Oh thank you Apple for OSX - an operating system that works.

Better luck next time Microsoft.

Summary: Best OS I've used to date
Review: XP Pro, with Service Pack 1 (should be included with the copy Amazon sells) is the best OS I've used to date.

Recommendations:
1) XP Pro isn't really worth it with a computer older than 2 years; features like quick boot (boot in 20 seconds not 2 minutes) require newer technology to work, and XP isn't optimized for slower, older machines. It will run, but it won't be pleasant.

2) If you're not the type to call Microsoft for help, look online for the OEM version of this product. You'll pay half price ($125), and receive a full version - but without phone support. You can still call Microsoft to "Activate" XP, though.

3) Turn on the Auto-Update feature (just wait for it to ask you about it). You can protect yourself from 99% of viruses by just letting it run, and rebooting now and then when it asks you to.

4) If you're buying this for the pretty factor, consider XP Home (just as pretty and less money). There's an OEM version of this as well for half ($100). Also, consider buying one of the Theme add-ons; you can't customize XP's colors like you could 2000 or 98. You'll need to buy an add-on like XP Plus or StyleXP for that. XP Plus gets you Microsoft's added Themes, and StyleXP gets you user-built themes and lets you customize them yourself.

Summary: Not My Favorite...
Review: While I respect the opinions of people who have gone to XP and liked it, I am not one of them. My machine is in good shape, its a P4 2ghz, 1 gig RAM, GeForce 8X video card with 128 megs, and 80 gig E/IDE hard drive. My games still run better on Win98SE. My digital camera never did work quite right either. After messing with it for several months I just bagged it and went back to Win98SE. I didn't have to worry about the latest mountain of security flaws either.

Summary: Excellent Operating System
Review: I have just purchased Windows XP Home Edition upgrade. My score is actually 4.5 (they just didn't give me an option for that). I had a major problem with installation, but I don't think that it was XP, my old OS Windows 98 kept saying it was performing and illegal operation and giving me that horrible blue screen.

***OWNERS OF WINDOWS 2000 PRO READ THIS*** Since my upgrade would not work with Win98, I just formatted my hard drive and installed WINDOWS 2000 PRO, and I tried running it and it wouldn't work (just as the box says) but I put in the Windows XP disc and restarted my computer. I then booted the disc instead of windows (an option just popped up). It scanned my system for a current windows (saying that without it, it could not intstall XP) and it found WINDOWS 2000 PRO and installed XP. You cannot upgrade, but you can install a new version of XP from the Upgrade disc as I did.

The installation takes can take 40-90 minutes. After that, XP runs extremely well, even on my old system (378mhz amd processor, 192mb of ram, and only 6.3gb hard drive) XP boosted my systems speed very much, AOL now opens in half the time it took before!
The design of XP is stunning, much better than the plain design of 95,98,98se,Me, and 2000, although if you want you can change your theme to make it look very much like those versions. The control panel can be listed in categories or classic view and the Icons are much more detailed. The start menu is setup to be more user friendly with a section for your most recently used programs.
There is also a very nifty feature called "Remote Assistance" , you can give someone access (over windows messenger) to see your desktop and help you fix something you need. So, for all those people who need tech help from one of their friends, that person can remotely fix it from their computer. When you first install, you will need to activate it through microsoft.com to be able to use it after 30 days (anti-piracy measure), so it is best to buy it.

Summary: Excellent...for even the computer ignorant!!
Review: Regarding loading, installing, and using, this has to be one of the easiset ever, in terms of a Microsoft product. Very stable and reliable. Highly recommend, and I'm not even a computer geek...or so I like to think...

I'm only giving it 4 stars because though this is a good system, I have hopes even this operating system will improve at some time.

Summary: XP = needs Xtra Power
Review: While Windows XP is viewd by many as a great operating system, there are several flaws, but the average consumer will probably never notice. If you're planning on upgrading to XP, you should really make sure you have at least 256mb of RAM, 512mb is even better. XP is resourse hungry and really needs more RAM than Microsoft states in order for it to run smoothly and eliminate crashes. It does require more processing power too, but this should not be a problem for most newer systems. I would however not recommend running it on anything less than a 1.0 gig machine.

Summary: Downward problems big time
Review: In and of itself, and for multimedia use, it's absolutely terrific. Best example: burn CDs while running other operations, even with files from network drives, unlike every other CD utility I've ever used or heard of. What's BAD? Very poor compatibility with older games and programs, that predate XP compatible hardware. If I still want to play DOOM or use some older business software that I still like I need to keep a 98 station running. And DON'T install it as an upgrade! Mouse/keyboard drivers are a mess. If you want to upgrade an existing station, verify all your peripheral drivers, then format your hard drive and install it as a new OS. Then kiss any software more than three years old bye-bye, and have a blast with Media Player and Quake 3. Oh, and File Searching is frustratingly slow, no idea why.
