Summary: Microsoft "The Next Enron!"
Review: Red Hat 7.3 is great! I've used Red Hat since 7.1 and it always improves from the version before. Imagine that, an operating system which progresses. It has everything you need: wordprocessing, audio/mp3 players, dvd players, Netscape, and AOL instant messenger. Linux is infinitely more reliable than windows and faster. If you still need windows, it's no problem duel booting your machine.

Summary: Better edition is out.
Review: Red Hat 8 is out, and it is muuuuch better! If you want phone support you need to buy the professional edition; otherwise, you just get email help - which isn't much help. If you are a newbee Windows type of person I would seriously consider Red Hat Professional. Why spend all evening cussing your computer? The only other Linux edition I would consider is Xandros. I haven't tried it yet, but Xandros is the follow on to the old Corel Second Edition of Linux which was a great piece of work.

Summary: Good, decent distro
Review: Red Hat has the advantage of top-of-mind awareness in Linux circles--especially in the enterprise. For home users, Red Hat's offerings are good, decent, and worth the price of admission.

RH 7.3 comes with the latest versions of KDE and Gnome and offer the desktop user all of the basic apps they need. For this, it is to be recommended.

Keep in mind though that Mandrake and Suse both offer more packages and applications with their distributions than RH does. Red Hat, although committed to the desktop to some extent, puts more of their efforts into their professional product and into the enterprise as that is where the bulk of their revenue comes from--at least from what I've read.

Suse and Mandrake make their distros with the home desktop user in mind. Therefore, you will get more for your money, in my opinion, if you invest in these products than you would get from RH.

Don't get me wrong, Red Hat is a great distro. But for the money, the other products give you more than RH 7.3
