Rating: Summary: Well worth the cost Review: I too saw in various Mac forums that there did seem to be some issues with this new OS. Once 10.3.2 fix was released and the Unsanity Haxies were compatible, I figured I'd go ahead with it one free afternoon. I chose the upgrade option instead of archive & install (due to limited HD space - only 2 GB free on my 10 GB dual USB iBook) and just let it cook for awhile. It took longer than I thought it would but once it finished and restarted - no problems at all! Very attractive interface and it does feel a little faster.Exposé is extremely cool - I found it by accident hitting F9 while exploring the new setup. It's nice having labels back too. New version of Mail now allows attachments to be deleted from saved messages which is a real space saver. Safari continues to improve and I rarely encounter sites it can't handle. I have been very happy with the Panther experience. Sure it would be nice if it were a little cheaper but afterall we have to keep Apple in business!
Rating: Summary: Panther Purrs Review: I finally took the plunge and installed Panther yesterday morning on a G4 Powerbook. Originally I was going to wait until my week off of school for the upcoming Chinese New Year because I thought I may need the time to fix any problems if the installation was not successful. Previous reading through many Mac forums had led me to believe that I would more than likely have a myriad of problems. After carefully reviewing many forum posts, I decided that I would do an "archive and install." Having done some simple disk maintenance (ran repair disk permissions on the disk utility) and backed up all important files the night before, I awoke at 5:30 this morning ready to install. Trembling with both anticipation and fear, I turned on the computer and inserted the first installation disc. Following all directions onscreen, I was amazed and delighted with the ease of installation. Still not convinced of my success, I held off jumping for joy until the computer had been restarted and I had the chance to check everything out. Because of the archive and install, all my preferences were saved, I lost nothing, and didn't even have to reconfigure my comuter for the wireless connection at home. Internet Explorer, which I rarely use, loaded more quickly, and Safari, which I use 99% of the time, was even faster than before. I had a look at a WebQuest page I had made, and all the animated graphics were working very well, whereas before in Safari, only one was animated. I did have to re-install Norton Anti-Virus, but the installer was still on the computer, so that was very simple as well. I've downloaded all available updates, and the OS is very stable thus far. To print, I didn't have to do any reinstalls, rather I just plugged the printer cable into the USB port, and voila, successful printing! Panther appears to be a great operating system, so much better than Windows XP, which I use (and regularly curse) on the machines at school. If you are thinking of making the switch, by all means go for it!
Rating: Summary: Waited for 10.3.2 update Review: I am very happy with this upgrade. I do think it is a little spendy, but I do notice a speed bump on my iMac G4 800 mhtz, and like the new features. I havn't had one app that hasn't worked. All my periphials work great too. A didn't like spending the money but in the end I am glad I did.
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: Everyone should experience what a well-designed operating system is like. OS X is amazing.
Rating: Summary: Great Software....check requirements on website Review: Before purchasing, check the minimum system requirements on Apple's website. An earlier review stating that you need 512mb memory and a 40 gig hard drive doesn't match the website information (at least 128mb memory and around 2-4 gig available hard drive space, depending on what you do). The website further states that if you are already running OS X, this is a fairly easy upgrade to Panther 10.3
Rating: Summary: Best system ever Review: More stable, more reliable. Faster than the previuos system jaguar (10.2.x). I recomend it!
Rating: Summary: Awesome performance, solid technology Review: The new Mac operating system is truly an awesome product. As a long time Windows XP (Pro) user, I quickly made the transition to Mac OS X and will never go back. OS X Panther is intuitive and extremely powerful. There is no registry to get screwed up like in Windows. Applications are "installed" just by copying them to the Applications directory. I could reinstall the operating system, and all applications run just fine; try that with Windows. Automatic updates are nice and the features such as Expose' and fast user (environment) switching blows Windows away. The Unix (Berkley Software Distrobution/BSD) underpinning makes this a professional grade and highly stable operating system for high end and professionals using it for everything from business applications, to graphics design and professional video editing.
Rating: Summary: Not for every user - Difficult Install Review: Personally, I found that this was a trying experience from the beginning. First off, few stores even carry Mac software, so that even locating the package is difficult. Thankfully there are on-line opportunities like Amazon to fulfill the dream. Physically installing this product was an even greater difficulty. I could not find this in a 3.5" format and had to upgrade my PC in order to be able to run the CD. After re-booting, I found that the CD was not mounted and that the software could not be recognized. I spent numerous hours on the phone with Apple Tech support, only to determine that the system requirements were not fully explained in the promotional literature. This upgrade requires an extremely fast processor, at least 512 Mb memory, minimum 40 Gb hard drive. In fact, the system architecture and operating system are completely different! Who knew? I can tell you it is not recommended for the typical Win 98 or Win 2000 customer. This is probably much better suited to the owner of a new XP machine with the latest in video & IO features.
Rating: Summary: No review answers my questions! Please help Review: I have been using an Apple computer for 22 years. I now have Jaguar, which is worse than the prior update. I worked by leaving significant folders on the desktop and like to arrange their order. I am highly visual. I loved scrapbook, notes, and the windowshade feature to stack various parts of a project on my desk.. I have none of these in the unix based system. I keep the dock small after trying various locations and sizes.. With vitreous floaters I don't like things that swoosh, or grow, or pop up and make using this system more visually tiring than earlier options. Not to be persnickity, but if one is a home user and does only email and letters, memos, training materials to hand out--why all the bells and whistles without a general opt in for "simple". Stickies don't replace notes; there is no ability to stack a series of "windowshades" on the full desk top No one has given me a reason to upgrade. I understand it is impossible to go back to the system 9, which I preferred. System 7 something was my all time favorite. I do have a G-4 with 128 mg of memory and graphite airport. Can people suggest why Panther would do anything for mac fans who don't do games, music, complex graphs, charts, etc. thanks
Rating: Summary: Went from Windows to Mac. OS X Review: To compare the two well ...... Windows (IBM Formatted Operating system) loses hands down I would suggest everyone to invest into a Mac. G4 or higher. What are the reasons why I would say this? I don't spend all my time working on bugs in Os X Panther. Windows Xp Home & Pro. I had this problem. Plus, Windows XP no matter what crashed my programs a lot (shut them down). OS X Panther is incredibly user friendly. I like the changes they added. They added short cuts on the left side of every window. This makes it easier for not only me but my wife to browse with ease. My wife is one of the most computer ignorant people I have ever met. She about killed me when I got rid of the IBM desktop to get a Mac. G4 (traded a Athlon Duron for the G4). The Jaguar and 9.2 operating systems she hated because it wasn't as user friendly to the point she didn't have to bug me (the computer geek) every five seconds to ask where the programs she needed was. With Panther she doesn't bug me but maybe once in a blue moon. This also ,much like Jaguar, is a very stable operating system. I don't have programs shut down on me nearly as much as Windows XP does. I like the fact it comes with Safari browser for the internet. It beats downloading from the Mac. site. Safari is a good browser and seems a lot more stable then Internet Explorer. Well in short it is user friendly , very stable and my wife actually enjoys using the Mac. now (and those are the important things). I would highly suggest buying even if you use Jaguar.
