Rating: Summary: Get it, PLEASE! Review: This game is AMAZING. I would say that I don't really like Myst, just because its worlds are soooo desolate, and there is no interaction. And the graphics in Myst were [junky] (dont have realmyst yet, soon i will...). If you were going to use a walkthrough, there was no point. I confess, I used a lot of hints in Riven... So I had to use it some. But with the intriguing story line and awesome graphics, I didn't really mind. Also, the ages aren't like 34 square yards, like in Myst. Some non-spoiler hints to those thinking about buying Riven. 1) Write everything down. Stuff you see on Survey Island, for example, will help you enourmously on Temple Island 2) Look in every direction at every node. Otherwise, you'll miss clues, and worse yet, scenes. 3) You can only die if you are REALLY dumb, or [CENSORED BECAUSE OF SPOILERS], so dont be afraid to try anything, or click on stuff. I CAN'T WAIT ANOTHER WEEK UNTIL MYST 3!!!! PS.[I wish they would] make an updated version of this one like [they] did with realMyst. I want 360 degree panning in the most amazing world I've ever been to! PPS. Also, if you do, I want access to more parts of the Moiety Age and Age 233! And I want that grove to be put back in Survey Island!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Sequel to Myst Review: Hold on to your seatbelt! Atrus wants your help to rescue Catheryn and capture Gehn. In this excellent sequel to the most popular CD game, Myst, you're back to save the day. Between the fascinating puzzles and live people videos (not graphic animations), get ready to be immersed in a whole new set of ages. Riven offered several key items that kept me spellbound. The rides on various vehicles in the game, including a mine car, a Tram-like device called a Maglev, and the beautiful scenery in the sub ride kept me spellbound. Two puzzles were super tricky, but I enjoyed working with them and thought they added some spice to Riven. Notably, the animals of Riven and their figures will keep you on the edge of your seat (possibly pulling out your hair, too). The beauty of Map Island and the devices of Crater Island kept me coming back for more, even after solving the game. After the let down of Myst's ending, great game that it is, Riven ends with a bang. This game will prepare you to anticipate Exile, coming out soon! Get Riven: Find Catheryn: Capture Gehn: Lose yourself on a continent that was riven by an unstable man!
Rating: Summary: This is the greatest game ever -- for the thinking man. Review: I'm a fairly hardcore gamer and have played my share of Q3A and Unreal variants, but I'm also the owner of relatively high IQ and an appreciation for beauty. Riven is the hardest game I've ever played, but I loved every minute of it. If you're the sort of gamer who can't stand a slow pace, steer way clear of Riven, because to finish it without a walk-through, you'll need hours and hours of spare time and lots of notes. And as far as I'm concerned, there's no point in playing a game like Riven in the first place if you're just going to use a walk-through; it eliminates the joy of challenge that one plays for in the first place. Riven has what no other game I've ever played so far has: unparalleled realism of design. In most adventure games, each puzzle is a location and isolated incident all its own. Riven works like the real world; distant objects and items may be related, not all things that can be moved are machines or parts of some mechanism -- some just move or make noise or whatever because they do, and machines with complex or extensive functions have equally complex and extensive workings and a commensurate number of parts. And in Riven, as in the real world, context and environment are very important. Every little detail matters; it's not the sort of "adventure" game where every five steps some idiotic "control panel" full of buttons pops up and occupies the entire screen while asking you to think of a combination. As adventure games go, Riven is different, even from Myst -- Riven is in a class all alone and far, far above others, even classics like Grim Fandango or Obsidian. AND (and this is my favorite part) Riven is the only truly NON-LINEAR game I've ever played. Ever. Playing Riven is truly like becoming an archaeologist for a month and learning all about another culture -- which, in my opinion, makes it the best game ever. If, however, this description sounds borrrring to you -- after all, it is basically the polar opposite of games Deus Ex or MDK2 -- steer clear. You won't be amused.
Rating: Summary: Good Game Review: A fun, but slighly confusing game that may leave you doing plenty of bac-tracking. Play only if you love being challenged and have lots of time to devote to it. Buying the strategy guide will save you headaches.
Rating: Summary: Riven was my first computer game...I'm hooked Review: I purchased Riven when I read an ad for it. The pictures alone intrigued me to the point of wanting to see what it was all about. From the very beginning I wandered what would happen next, and the tram coming across from the another island almost knocked me out of my chair. I remember turning from each scene to see more and more, and experience all the sounds and all the scenery. Of course, never having played a PC game before caused me to have no idea how to even understand what I was up against. Today, four years later I have about 27 adventure games on my shelf and haven't really seen much to compare with Riven. Even when I saw my first 360 degree game I didn't feel as though Riven had let me down for not having that technology. I just enjoy the experience of hunting and visualising that comes with a game like this. There is no-one to kill and no one is trying to kill me so gameplay is much more to my speed. I was such a newby to gaming that when I told someone how difficult play was she said," try the walkthru". I didn't know what that was and of course now the first thing I do with a new game is download one for the more frustrating moments that I know are coming. Thanks to all those who provide them for us. I'm not game savvy enough to figure out a lot of them. Myst was the next game I played when I found out it had a connection to Riven. I have just ordered Myst 3 Exile and will find if it really connects the two worlds.
Rating: Summary: I loved it! Review: I loved it! buy it, you will like it also, the graphics are great, music great, great sequal to Myst.
Rating: Summary: A great sequel! Review: Though I didn't think it would be possible without adding real pictures, the graphics on Riven exceed those of Myst. Every scene is elaboratly detailed and very pleasing to the eye. The sounds and music are much better and sound even more realistic. They also have added more animation. You see more things moving around that makes it seem like you are more involved in the game. They have also added some very cool features such as a roller coaster type vehicle that lets you travel from island to island and a submarine used to travel underwater. The game play is much the same as Myst, but sometimes you have to go to one area and do some things to complete a puzzle in another area. You also have to learn the Riven math system to solve other puzzles which I thought was a cool idea. Ultimately, all these things add up to tougher game play, but this game is well worth it.
Rating: Summary: You'll be Livin' in Riven! Review: Beautiful computer game that you can waste mindless hours on when you should be out saving the world. Pretty difficult. You may find yourself wondering aimlessly around the amazing landscapes, not having a clue what to do. But that's like real life, and this game tries to be like real life. So if you enjoy real life, you might like this game. If you hate life, go play Pac-Man. Gotta love those roller coaster-type rides!
Rating: Summary: The best adventure game ever! Review: Okay, I'll admit it but I am not much of a myst fan. Because the graphics were bad and rather boring, I really didn't enjoy the hit myst game. But Riven is different. It boasts beautiful graphics and sound and very hard gameplay. I never would have won the game if it hadn't been for the strategy guide to help me. There are many D'ni numbers symbols which you have to recognise. Recognising how islands represent grid patterns is another puzzle. The many Ages you must explore are beautifully rendered and feature real graphics and interesting worlds with a dark secret behind them. I've heard that Myst3 is coming out soon. I hope that it will be as fun and exciting as Riven:the Sequel to Myst.
Rating: Summary: 2 Thumbs up, and a 5 star. Review: Pure Genius. What else would you rather be doing than exploring a whole new world? This is a beautiful game that has a smart storyline.
