Rating: Summary: Great for OS X Review: If you've read my Unreal Tournament review, you know that I REALLY love UT. However, I finally got a reason to buy Quake III Arena, it runs on OS X. BEAUTIFULLY. It is still more cartoony than UT, and is harder to control (It goes WAY too fast to be believed) but it runs on OS X. even on my little iMac. You just have to download the newest version after you install the CD. And BANG your gamin'. I originally would only give this game 3 stars, but with the OS X compatibility came an extra.Necris

Rating: Summary: It works, it REALLY works ... Review: Obviously, the question of whether Q3 or UT is the better game is one of personal taste ... that Q3 looks terrific is beyond question, and as to the old familiar weapons, well, why tamper with success? Sure, it's not too original, but then if you've been around for a couple of years of ID games, at least you know how to use these honeys. And they all have that viscerally satisfying delivery system! But what I've come to love most about ID's games, and Quake III is no exception, is stability. Even on a fast beefy Mac, the original Unreal was a royal pain to get to work crash free, let alone in online games. Quake III doesn't ask for much (a certain tech baseline taken for granted, but then most new games require that these days), and it really delivers speed, looks, and stability, without fussing with your system configuration and extensions one bit. Oh yeah, and it's extremely violent, brutal and graphic ... a true Quaker's delight!
Rating: Summary: Send in the clones Review: Out of the box Q3A is terrible. It's like a Q2 clone, with all the same old weapons. Q3A is like a Friday the 13th movie nothing new and the format is just plain lame. I originally bashed UT but compared to Q3A, UT is a godsend. Maybe some of the Mods for Q3A will help but they better be some damn good Mods. Hopefully TF2 will save the First Person Shooter, cause Q3A sure doesn't.
Rating: Summary: Pretty Fun, I Prefer UT Review: Quake 3 Arena has fun deathmatch-style gameplay, but the Quake 3 engine is really quite terrible. The graphics quality is far from stunning (older games like the original Unreal look far better, even when Quake 3 has the settings all the way up). Quake 3 also has a slow engine. Even with the settings turned all the way down to help performance, framerates (specifically with smoke, but also in general) are dismal on lower-end computers, and not really all that high on the high-end ones. I should also mention that Quake 3 has netcode that can be unplayable even on broadband (bullets hitting a few seconds after firing, etc). Fun gameplay is about all that this game has going for it, but if you really want a good deathmatch and graphics aren't the main concern, go get Quake1 and QuakeWorld -- even a modem user can generally play that online without too much lag. EDIT: I've seen some amazing graphics in recent games using the Quake3 engine. It must have just been poorly implemented in the original game.
Rating: Summary: No Unreal Tournament, but still good Review: Quake 3 is a beautiful, addicting 3D shooter, with its true strength lying of course in multiplayer. The graphics are stunning, and the weapons unique. I would say however, having played both, that it doesn't hold a candle to Unreal Tournament. UT's graphics are slightly better, the bots are more intelligent, and all in all, the overall gameplay is slicker and more creative. Plus the UT single-player games, while not its strength either, have longer replay value. If you buy both games, you can't go wrong, they both are a lot of fun and in their own ways very well-done and addicting. If you're debating which 1 of the 2 to get, without hesitation I recommend going with Unreal Tournament.

Rating: Summary: Quake 3 Arena Mac, Linux and IBM Review: There is a mistake with the information. It says that there isa flamethrower and that there are types of classes, light, medium, andheavy. But infact there are no classes and no flamethrower in the game. This is a great game for any operating system and I gave it a five, it holds up to the greatness of the Quake series. It is, in my opinion better than half life and Unreal/Unreal Tovurnement
