Rating: Summary: Don't Bother ! Review: AOM is one of the worse games Ensemble Studios has put out to date. The game is nothing but a poor remake of the AOE series. If you like the RUSHING in the Age series then you'll feel right at home with this game for sure. The 3 civs you have a choice from are the "Egyptian" which are very weak, the "Greeks" which are the easiest to learn and play but still stink compared to the "Norse" civ which are to overpowering. The single game has 3 lvls of difficulty, Easy, Moderate and Hard. You will have very little trouble winning on the Easy lvl, but beware on the Moderate lvl. The difficulty makes a big jump from easy to moderate. And thats not even counting the AI cheating, just like it did in the Age series. ( Remember the double Resources the computer player got but U didn't on the Hardest lvl ) Record a game and check it out for yourself.. The Peons ( Laborers ) in AOM are really stupid. You have to take them by the hand and show & tell them what to do. At least in the AOE series the Peons seemed to get a little bit smarter with each expansion. Your melee army are also stupid. And forget about having control over them, cuz you don't. Even if you have them *stand ground* they don't listen well. I have to put my army on *stand ground* most of the time because as soon as their out of view they do as they please. And SLOW, slow isn't the word for it. They walk slow, build slow, work slow, and fight slow. Even the horses don't run fast enought to catch a Peon, unless its your Peon being chased by the enemy. And theres NO game speed control except for one which is called *Lightning Speed*, and that speed stinks... I gave this a 1 star rating because I feel the reviews were not telling the whole truth about the game. :( And I read just about all of the reviews I could find before the game went on the shelves. Save your money and spend it on Christmas gifts for your family. Disappointed ~*Marie~*
Rating: Summary: amazing Review: unique program which can cause windows 2000 halt. i have never seen such a program before. this is actually 2D game not real 3D what good it is if the only 3D effect is rotating maps. they spoiled the age of empire series totally
Rating: Summary: Great Game! Good Special Features! Dumb Minotaur Review: First of all I simply must start by saying that this game is the best RTS i've ever played. To sum up this review i'll put it into sections: - The first thing I always do when i first buy a game is play the sngle player missions. From these I go on to figure out if the game is good enough for online play. I played the first mission and was amazed at the detaild put into the cinematics and game. Even the story was impressive. The second mission only provided me with more excitement. The fact that the "Myth Units" are not only extremely mythologicly acurate is good enough. But the special attacks for each one is the coolest thing I've seen in a RTS game since Star Craft. An example of this is the cyclops picks up an enemy soldier and throws him. If you love a good storyline in single player missions (or just like killing Trojans) this is the game to get. - The next great thing about this game is the multiplayer. ESO has done a great job of providing gamers with an easy yet effective console. The only problem that I can see with it is that the ladder games take too long to search for a non 1 vs. 1 game. But I am sure that will be fixed in time. - The last thing is perhaps the best. The contents of the special edition box! One item is the DVD. The DVD contains making of features on Age of Myth. The 2nd item is the poster, signed by everyone at Ensamble Studios (the problem with this is that it's massive.) The 3rd item is a nice picture of the "non- evil gods" they're cool but they should have packed all the gods since the evil ones look the coolest. Another item is the Collectors book. This is very useful since it gives you more information than the normal book. The 2nd to last item is the Bulfinch's Mythology Book. I find it exteremely interesting. And finnaly, the worst item, a dumb plastic Minotaur figure. It's made of cheap plastic and is put in a plastic bag. So, basicly, if you want the Minotaur only don't buy the game. Otherwise it's well worth the money to buy the Special Edition.
Rating: Summary: I wrote a review, but it wasn;t shown. Review: As you can see from my star rating I didn't like it. I will not write another review.. Save your money, its AOE all over but worse.
Rating: Summary: The Best! Review: Its the king of all strategy games. Add superb graphics, great gameplay, awesome attacks, cool characters, and a whole bunch of fun together, and what do you get? Age of Mythology. Microsoft has made some great games in the past, but this by far is best. There are practically no errors in gameplay. The price is a little high, but its definitly worth it. It takes some space though as it uses 1.5 gigs on your hard drive. Besides that I see it as the perfect strategy game ever. Bottom line: If you want a superior strategy game, buy Age of Mythology.
Rating: Summary: Not Worth the Hype - At All! Review: This game, although somewhat more 3 dimensionally detailed, is highly disappointing. Beware you MUST meet the minimum system requirements and have a video card supported on their "list". Several people with that are even still suffering from numerous bugs and crashes. If you buy it wait until at least Christmas or later, maybe there will be patches out by then. The "mythology" is an interesting addition, but there is ultimately very limited variety. If more options, and beta testing had been put into this game it would be considerably better. However, the stringent hardware "requirements" make this game one of Microsoft's most blatant attempts to bolster a lagging technology sector with software that needlessly creates a planned obsolescence.
Rating: Summary: a disapointment Review: After waiting anxiously for a year for AOM, all I can say is that it doesn't come close to AOE. Most of the graphics aren't as good, the game doesn't have as many options and it's not very good all around. It's still an okay game, but nothing at all like I expected.
Rating: Summary: Good, but nothing new Review: I want to say right away that there is nothing wrong with this game. It has good graphics, intense gameplay, and enough diversity and strategy to last a while. My only problem with it is that there is very little that seems amazingly new to old fans of Age of Empires. Sure, there are mythological units, godly powers and there are more choices involved when advancing through ages. However, there's still a barracks, a stable, and an archery range. There is still a pikeman type unit, a champion unit, a skirmisher unit, an archer unit, a cavalry unit, the same "mangonel" stone thrower. There are still four ages. At least they have been renamed, but it's not much. Even the interface is the same. The buttons have new icons, but they are still in exactly the same layout. Frankly, half of the new features in AOM could have been in a new patch for AOE2. So, I still recommend this game to anyone who hasn't played the AOE series a lot, but if you have, and you are looking for something different in the RTS genre, I would suggest something like Medieval - Total War, or Battle Reals. Both games are more innovative. In the end, this whole genre is becoming old - there aren't that many ways to vary the "gather resources, build a base and army, and destroy your opponent" theme - while there are fewer and fewer new concepts, there are still some left, and I think that if you are an experienced RTS gamer, you should go for something different.
Rating: Summary: WHERE'S ALL THE DARNED STUFF??? Review: I find it hard to believe that the world's most powerful software company is putting out an RTS game in 2002 that is this thin. Don't get me wrong, I agree with the other reviewers who say that AOM delivers the best graphics of any strategy game to date. In addition to this, I'd like to add that AOM uses system resources very efficiently (after 10 hours of gaming I have experienced exactly zero crashes), and plays quickly (no more 12 hour marathons like we had with Age of Empires). And suprisingly for an MS product, the game also has pretty darn good instructions (although you really won't need these if you've ever played an RTS before). But, this is why I give it two stars... 1) Very limited selection of warriors and special creatures --only two types of horseman, two types of footman, and four types of mythic creatures on any one side (AOE has at least three times as many unit types) 2) Only four levels for Single User Random Map Play (and this from a game that advertises on the box: "Strategic Depth") 3) Steep limitations on use of god powers 4) God powers not really that powerful and are, at best, uninspired 5) The games AI that is used to run your opponents is more artificial than intelligent 6) Due to the above and unlike many of other RTS's, this game has very little replay value, and thus isn't worth the steep price MS is asking
Rating: Summary: Awesome is all I can say Review: Well this is the second computer game I have bought for my computer and after reading the reviews I figured I couldn't go wrong. Well this game lives up to everything great and wonderful you hear about. I mean the graphics are wonderful, the scenery is fantastic and the characters are unreal. I like the fact that you get to take as long as you want to build your village and army. I mean it is basically up to you when you finally decide to fight your opponent on the field. It's hours of fun and very very addictive, I had no idea it was 5am when I finally had to make myself go to bed haha! I mean you really get into the game it is awesome! I would highly recommend this game, the only flaw (which isn't really a flaw for some) it takes up a lot and I mean a lot of disc space so if you have a lot of disc space then ignore that but if you don't have that much then you may want to check out the details on this game before buying it because it does take up a lot. A friend of mine couldn't play on his computer because he didn't have enough. Other then that BUY THIS GAME it is awesome and I promise ... no regrets! Just give up your social life hahaha!!
