Summary: GREAT!!!
Review: Love this game, although if you are a teacher, you'll want to buy the collecters edition. The levels are lots of fun, and MS put a LOT of thought into them. Lots of replay value and I can't wait to try the multiplayer. You may want to upgrade the drivers for your graphics card before playing.

Summary: Fun campaign, but no replay value
Review: I enjoyed AOE and AOK (the predecessors to this game). AOK was really fun, with a variety of single player campaigns and some variation in how one-off games could be won.

AOM includes ONE campaign. It is fun and long and it increases in difficulty with each stage so there is mostly some challenge. It is a little too easy in the first several rounds, but even then it plays with mythological stories in an engaging way. The package would have been better if more campaigns had been included.

The real problem is the one-off ("random map") games available to single players. These are what make or break an RTS game like this one because they decide whether or not the game is replayable in the absence of campaigns. In AOM, random map games require no real strategic or tactical innovativeness. They are about one thing only: build more troops more quickly than your opponent can and rush his base ASAP. If you don't the AI will do it to you, so there's no choice. As a result, AOM ceases to be playable when you have finished the campaign.

Summary: disappointment
Review: The first thing I noticed was that the units, buildings, and interface were almost identical to AOE. Though Micrsoft claims that it is 3D for some unknown reason you can't rotate the camera. Nothing is 3D except for some of the units which are kinda 3D. Same boring tactics that are used in Aoe. Just more rushing. Not much when compared to Ground control or Earth 2150. It is better than Starcraft but not by much. Microsoft has donea very bad job at their first attempt to create a 3D game. Also the sides are very similar. Hardly any strategy involved. Por lighting and speciial effects.

Summary: Will Not Run on Non-Administrator Accounts
Review: Beware: This program, like many other recent games, will ONLY run on an account that has administrator privileges on Windows XP or 2000. That means that in most common home settings, school settings, or in public facilities with shared computers most users will not be able to play this game. If you have configured your home PC, for example, so that only you can perform potentially damaging administrative operations and have protected it from accidental damage by your kids by giving them "limited" accounts (a recommended "best practice" you should certainly be following), your kids will not be able to play this game. Similarly, if you have configured computers in a school in the obvious way, with only certain staff given administrative access and all others limited to "user-level" access, then only the administrators will be able to play the game.

Note that although I agree with the general consensus that Age of Mythology is a good game, my feeling is that it this limitation is a fatal one that should have been noted on the box (it is not) and thus I cannot give this product more than a single star, because it simply does not work in scenarios that it should be expected to work, and there are no warnings to this effect anywhere on the box or in the documentation...

Summary: A step backwards
Review: I've bought all of the "Age of..." games and have enjoyed them more and more with each new release. However, Age of Mythology has broken this trend and taken a step backwards in many ways. The only positive thing is the improved graphics. Everything else is worse. The number of possible opponents is fewer, the world (playing field) sizes are fewer and smaller, the number of levels of difficulty is fewer. In the last regard especially it suffers. The step in difficulty from easy to moderate is too large, from too passive to too aggresive opponents in one step. The game also lacks any feeling of strategy other than "build as fast as you can and then throw everything at your opponent". The small world sizes are a part of the reason for this as well and make anything other than 1 on 1 matches too crowded. Save your money and wait for the next one.

Summary: Fun game
Review: I generally avoid strategy games as they're generally mind-numbingly difficult, and I get frustrated easily.
This said, I find Age of Mythology fun, challenging and just eyecandyish in general. The graphics are beautiful, the background history (though generally glossy) is interesting, and the units are great and varied.
I disagree that this game is very much like Age of Empires, a game I found difficult and overly uniform. In AOM, the units and buildings vary significantly - both by function and looks. All 3 races are unique and interesting.
Overall, a great game.

Summary: Age of Mythology the best game!!
Review: I recently recieved AOM Collectors Edition for christmas and I was over the moon. The collectors edition is defintely worth the money (I think so) as you get six awesome mini-posters of the gods, a massive one of three of the gods, which is signed by all the people from Ensemble Studios, a DVD, Music CD, a Mythology Book, three cool tech trees and a Minotaur figurine. I suppose the only bad thing about this Collectors edition is that I can't put the game down and that the minotaur figurine isn't what I exactly expected. Though otherwise this is the best game out of the AGE OF- Series

Though a word of advice to those who want best performance, I tried it on my laptop and it is pretty good, though when I tried it on my Desktop computer it plays alot better.

This Game is AWESOME, well done Ensemble Studios

Summary: game is fun but hard to get working
Review: About the game: I've never played Age Of Empires, but this is a standard game in the real time strategy genre -- collect resources, build units, advance your civilization, etc. For those looking more at tactics than strategy, try the Myth: The Fallen Lords series.

As I have played it more (all in single player mode), I have actually started to enjoy it more. That's a good sign.

As for the game locking up -- Microsoft has a web page on this subject. I tried all their proposed fixes, and I think the one that worked was turning off the sound hardware acceleration. I still have little problems in the sound (like static), but the game has not locked up once since then.

[Update: I switched from a GeForce2 video card to a GeForce4 video card and the sound problems fixed themselves. Don't ask me what the video card has to do with the sound, but.... I'm running it under Win98.]

As others have commented, the music is annoying, and so are the "ready"/"yes, I'll do it" responses from the units. The latter are in whatever language the designers thought would be appropriate. I have no idea if they are even real words or just made up sounds. I think the idea was to emphisize the different cultures, but it is unnecessarily complicated.

Summary: Best RTS in Ages!
Review: Ensemble studios has really outdone itself. They took arguably the best Real Time Strategy ever (Age of Empires) and made an even better game. AOE veterans will feel right at home with the interface. They took the basic methods of AOE and totally improved upon them. The Mythological untis are spectacular. I have two words for you: God Powers. This is one of the best, if not the best, Real Time Strategies ever created.

The gameplay is flawless, the graphics are great, the array of units is wonderful, and for those of you who like single player Campaigns, you're in luck. If you are even moderatly intersted in RTS' BUY THIS GAME!!!

P.S. Don't worry, it's not just a AOE with different graphics.
