Rating: Summary: I've lost more Hours... Review: I tried demo versions of both Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament when they first came out. I had to make a choice, couldn't justify buying both. I chose UT. I am planning on buying the GOTY edition soon also. This GAME steals more time from me than anything I have ever done. It is smoother than Quake III Arena, better looking, and easier to control. I can only say that I will never doubt GT Interactive titles (I guess it is Infogrames now). If you are looking for the BEST FPS you can get for Classic Mac OS, this is it.
Rating: Summary: And it begins... Review: I wanted to see what the hype was about. I bought the game hoping to see why every game out there uses the Unreal Engine. And then I found out why. And I really liked it. It's fast, it's amazingly addictive, no wonder it's so popular! Also, it's fun to blow stuff up in a video game.

Rating: Summary: Not what I expected Review: I was very disappointed with this game. Maybe this is because I had already played Half-life before I played this game. I'm always skeptical when a game is without a singleplayer mode and I doubted that it could beat the multi-player of Team Fortress classic for Half-life. While it is an ok multiplayer game it had already been far surrpassed by Half-life in single-player, multi-player, graphics, realism, as well as lasting appeal. I could not in good conscience rate this game any higher when it is obviously lacking in so many categories.
Rating: Summary: Not a dull moment! Review: I've had few enjoyable online gaming experiences - until now. UT is simple to connect with, and the six types of games keep things interesting. Plus, just when you get tired of the same maps, you autodownload a new map you've never seen before and keep going. The online game tracking service provides both your statistics and detailed stats of particular games. If, for some reason, you don't have a quick Internet connection, the standalone Tournament is a blast, for a little while.
Rating: Summary: addictive, awesome online gaming Review: I've had this game for my Mac for about one year now, and I am still very happy and play often. The game itself is very big, there are deathmatch, capture the flag, assault etc... and yeah there are alot of MOD's out there for this game still around, the number of servers are getting smaller for the more specialized games, as of Feb 2003, probly because people are switching over to the newly released UT 2003, but if you havent bought and played this game yet, don't worry, there are around 1500-2000 servers up and running still for this version of the game. (capture the flag and deathmatch servers being the most popular. -Deathmatch, usually online around 8-12 players in one map, and just kill and see who gets the most kills, usually ones the best connection. -Capture the Flag, simple enough, two flags, two teams 8-12, players per team, and you bring the enemy flag over to your flag, for a score. -(havent really played the other game modes, these two alone will keep you busy) Besides the MODs there are specific servers which run only certain weapons, Sniper Rifle, Insta-gib (one shot kills) Assault Rifle) and of course most run all weapons. Most servers run a different assortment of Maps or Levels so try different servers for more variety. I have an Indigo Imac, 400mhg with the 8mg video ram, yeah I know :-( but I have found a few servers that are always up and running with players and I get good frame rates on, (with DSL connection) for the price this purchase is really a no brainer, its an old game, but there are plenty of people who will be playing it for awhile longer.... have fun...
Rating: Summary: Excellent Engine Review: I've used both Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena extensively, and Unreal Tournament definitely comes out on top. In my experience, Unreal Tournament gets much higher framerates, yet has far more beautiful graphics than Quake 3 Arena could ever hope to achieve, even on the highest settings (I've tried). With an extensive array of 3rd party addons available online ..., Unreal Tournament's gameplay is endless.

Rating: Summary: Excellent level design Review: If you are comparing this to Quake 3, then take note that the level design in UT is much better, and this keeps the game very interesting. Q3 levels seem cramped in comparison. This game totally surprised me at how addictive it is.
Rating: Summary: The FPS networked game to play Review: If you're into first-person shooters, use Macintosh, and want networked play, there are two big choices for you. Do you go with Quake 3 Arena or with Unreal Tournament? Which one is most fun to play on the network? Both games will have hundreds of people in open Internet games at any time. (If you want to play with thousands of other people, you have to go with a PC and one of the Half-Life mods like TFC.) Network performance for both is great: low ping times, gracefully degrading performance. UT behaves better when the net connection goes away entirely. UT's interface for finding networked games is just light-years beyond Q3's. Q3's is terrible. UT's is a window with tabs for picking game types and panes that show info about who's playing the game now and other game status. The nod goes to UT here. How about people without big network pipes? I pick UT as the better game for single-player play, hands down. UT has four different game modes: standard deathmatch, capture the flag, domination, and assault. Q3 has deathmatch and more deathmatch, and has nothing as interesting as assault. UT's bots are also way more interesting than Q3's. UT's bots will follow orders and genuinely help you in teamplay. I pick UT. How about the graphics? This is a matter of taste. Both games have great graphics. Q3 has more eye-candy, more of the cool-looking GL effects. UT has better modeled levels and more interesting organic textures. Q3 is more science fictiony, UT more gritty-urban. How good is the UT Macintosh version? Excellent. Westlake Interactive did the Mac port and did a bang-up job. And what's more, they continue to support the game with fast turnaround time applying patches. All the mods, mutators, and models available work on the Macintosh version. Download, run the included mod installer, and you're there. UT also has excellent support for third-party 3D accelerators like the Voodoo3. (Quake3 is an OpenGL game, and until recently OpenGL drivers for the Voodoo were questionable.) I've played both, and I recommend UT to you.
