Review: I tried the live CD version to see if any hardware problems I would have. Only the sound card was an issue. The manufacturer only had a driver for RH 7.3. No problem got it mostly for the server functions and it is going on a spare PC. It has more packages than you can count.

I would use Partition Commander or System Commander to safely resize your windows partitions if you have no free partitions or drives. I have been in the Linux/Unix OSes for a year now and this works well. I have used Knoppix, Red Hat Enterprise Server, Fedora Core 2, FreeBSD, Solaris, Mandrake, and others. This had an easy install and has many things to get you up and running. I would recommend this for advanced OS users. If you just surf the Internet and play games this is not for you and you can stay with Windows and be ok. Being the best maybe not. But the real good secure OS are definitely harder to configure than this one.

Summary: Very nice!
Review: I'm actually writing this review on Suse 9.1 Pro. Best money I've ever spent. Most of my computing is done on a Linux box even though I'm getting an MCSE. 9.1 is by far the best yet and I'll continue to support SuSE and Linux.
The base OS is freely downloadable, but is really a demo version. The huge amount of software you get, the hardware support, and the manuals are definately worth it. Amazon even has a good price on it!

Summary: The worst Linux distro ever made
Review: I've installed and tried many Linux distros as Linux hosts to create minimal Linux (only kernel and busybox, and that's it) to have better undestanding of Embedded Linux. They are Redhat 7.3, 9.0, Mandrake 9.1, 9.2, SUSE 7.3, 8.0, 9.0 and now 9.1. I found SUSE 9.0 flawless and the best among distros above.
I purchased SUSE Pro 9.1 from Amazon in expecting kernel 2.6 is much faster than 2.4 due to its preemptiveness.
Unfortunately, it's unable to configure desktop with white font color on dark background, like 9.0!
Seriously, it took too long to open YAST (while I expected it's fast), I had to reboot, then
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
This is the first Linux crash I ever had after so many Linux installations. I had to install several times for each Linux distro above.
Certainly, this is my last SUSE.

Summary: SuSE Linux Professional 9.1
Review: If you are considering purchasing SuSE Linux Professional 9.1 as an escape from the corporate shenanigans of Microsoft, save yourself the trouble. At least Microsoft wears the wolf's clothing. Whatever you do, DO NOT buy SuSE Linux 9.1 Professional for the documentation or support. The support service is on par with the industry standard, which in the case of tech support is not a good thing. They respond to any request by pointing you to their online support database. At first glance, the database may seem great. However, only a tiny chunk of its information is new enough to be relevant to this product. Likewise, they are incredibly picky about the technicalities of which topics are covered. Most of the topics covered by free support are simple enough that they can be handled without their help. Then, they keep trying to sucker the customer into using the chargeable advanced support.
Meanwhile, the user's and adminstrator's guide provide almost no worthwhile information. The user's guide is nothing more than a brief description of the simplest features of various applications. The adminstrator's guide, on the other hand, fails in the opposite regard. It is overly technical, yet it remains incomplete. I have no problem with having a manual that's so vague as to of minimal help, and no problem with one that's too advanced. I would absolutely love an extremely advanced manual if I had one with enough relevant information for the technicalities to matter. Likewise, I understand how other users might need a simpler manual. The lack of an intermediate manual compromises the value of the other two.
Unhappy with the responses to my requests for support, I filed a complaint. Several days later, I finally received a response. They simply told me that they had done nothing wrong and my complaint had no justification. They informed me that my request was not covered by their free support service. I fully understand that some of my many questions were not covered, but that does not excuse their ignorance of other questions. For example, after abandoning any hope of configuring my current network card, I asked if a different specific network card would function properly without difficulty. This question remained unanswered, and I had to ask again before receiving only a tentative and insulting response. I do not have time to wait for two responses to receive one simple answer when I need to order a new card as soon as possible.
Obviously, when dealing with Linux, the user must be careful which hardware is used. SuSE includes a supported hardware database on their website. Unfortunately, they fail to clearly define the terms used in the database. This is why I had to inquire about the network card. I feared that by "full support" they simply meant that they could actually answer my question when I asked about a problem with it, and would simply tell me, "Sorry. It won't work."
The software itself seems fine to me, and I'd love to be able to use it. I'm waiting for my network card and hoping that I can access the internet with it. However, the complete arrogance of their complaint and support departments absolutely infuriates me. Rather than offering the freedom of Linux combined with the security that accompanies association with a large corporation, SuSE Linux combines the hassles of Linux with those typical of evil faceless corporations. At least amazon.com had a good price.

Summary: Suse Linux 9.1
Review: Installed easily, was on the net within 30 minutes, which i thought was rather good since it was the first time ever running linux of any kind. it does seem to be a chore to get wireless networking to work but thats more of a problem with the manufacturer of the wireless equipment . they dont support linux.But my over all expierence with suse is good, yast is impressive a really a plus for new user as myself i feel if your a windows user the graphical interface of suse kde will be a plus as far as other drivers they installed flawlessly. I recommend for a first time user.

Summary: 2.6 Kernel!
Review: It's easy and solid distro with 2.6 kernel. You can go minimux installation to keep system simple for server, or install Full to play like MS Windows. If you are using linux or want to start to learn linux, this could be good one for you. I liked Gentoo and FreeBSD but takes too much time to maintain. Red Hat puts too much stuff and feels like MS Windows. This one is easier to maintain but still you can see the what's going on.But if you don't care about OS and just want to use PC to improve your life, stick with MS Windows. It's easier and as stable as X Window.

Summary: Pay no attention to the MS kiss up (1st post)
Review: Linux a tried and true OS that is more stable and more flexible than Windows. Linux isn't for everyone but if you decide Linux is for you or want to give it a try...SuSE is very easy to use. Installing packages on SuSE 9.1 is as easy as using MS's Windows Update and you have complete control over your operating system. As Linux distro's go SuSE is very user friendly and comes some great software for playing music & videos (might have to a little tweaking due to DMCA laws to get your free DVD codec(s) but that easy -- lots's of HOWTO's available for just this thing), burning CD's and DVD's, email, chat, word processing, finances, photo editing, games, web surfing, scientific programming, look at star maps, etc. This list goes on and on. Using SuSE linux is no more difficult than using Tivo or your VCR (probably even less so these days) and really less complicated than other highly technical tasks that you every day (like drive a car). If you are interested in Linux, then give SuSE 9.1 a try. If your not too interested in server applications or some programming, scientific apps then you might to consider Suse 9.1 personal which is about $30.

Summary: An unbiased review
Review: Most of these reviews I see here are very suspicious. Either 5 stars and you love it or 1 star and you hate it worse than the plague. Maybe Amazon can post your IP addresses again, and all will become clear. I have downloaded the LiveEval disk from SUSE, and have installed 9.1 on no less than 3 completely different systems from the same CD... they are: My home-built work system -
abit IC7MB, 3.0 Ghz P4 w/ Hyperthreading, Seagate SATA HD, 2 EIDE HD's, CD/DVD reader, CD/DVD Writer, HP scanner, Sony monitor, USB mouse and keyboard, 3COM NIC, ATI Radeon 9800. My wife's Gateway My Compaq at work Each and every install performed flawlessly. I had no problems with any of the included software, and every piece of hardware on all systems was found and configured correctly with the following exceptions: Sound cards were not always recognized. However, after telling Yast to re-probe the hardware (one time) everything worked correctly. Also, still working on finding video drivers from ATI, however, you can download them free on ATI's web site. I was very pleased with the installer, KDE interface, the software included, and the overall experience of all of the installs. In summary: 1) I am not in any way affiliated with Microsoft OR SUSE., and
2) I WILL be purchasing the professional version of SUSE 9.1

Summary: One word frustration
Review: Ok, I can purchase a machine with Windows on it for free. But after listening to all the buzz about this one thinks he might try it out. If anyone thinks they are getting easy to use software and programs that actually work they are wrong. Most of them are totally useless and some don't even work. Just getting cut and paste to work right is a chore. Another problem is hardware detection, if it does not like it then you are just out of luck. Do yourself a favor and just use Windows XP Pro, it has to be the most polished operating system I have ever purchased. This linux software I thought was sposed to be free...
