Summary: Maybe I should buy Dummies for StarOffice
Review: I read the reviews, loved the price, and bought it. I don't like it. I guess I should stick with Unca' Bill.
I used Netscape for 3 years before going to Microsoft IE. I did not have half the hard time switching gears with those two.
I deleted StarOffice from my desktop, but changed my mind and wanted to reinstall it. It kept telling me I had the application already loaded and running.
Well, du-uh to me...maybe I am getting too old to switch gears again. Hey, I can use FTP, write HTML, and work critical care without difficulty, so who's the problem child here?

Summary: Super Product
Review: This is one of the best products that I have ever puchased! I installed it on a system that I built, running Win XP. Within 10 minutes I was expiermenting with the highly powerful image editor. I am a student, and have the need to send and recieve documents in many different formats, and StarOffice does it all. It opens and saves Word files perfectly, without any sort of formatting errors. The only downfalls of this software are the scant documentation and rough user interface. However, once you become accoustomed to it, there is every tool that you could ever need, and many more than you could ever use... :)

Summary: Got a corrupted Word doc? Fix it with StarOffice!
Review: .
GENERAL COMMENTS:

I first tried StarOffice 5.1 on a very unstable Win98 machine, with mixed luck. Version 5.2 behaved much better on it. Now I have StarOffice 5.2 on a WinXP machine, and it works well.

I would have given it 5 stars, but the learning curve for someone used to MS products is rather steep, unless you're doing plain vanilla stuff, and I must admit I haven't had the time to really learn the various components yet.

I do plan to learn to use it well and hopefully replace the equivalent MS products with it --the only thing keeping me from doing it right now is that I'm heavily dependent on Office macros and templates, so it's faster to just use Office for now. But the moment I have the time to figure out how to fully import or re-do all my macros and templates in StarOffice, it's goodbye Word!

FIXING WORD DOCS:

What I use it for most of the time is to fix Word 97 and Word 2000 documents, which have an unfortunate penchant for becoming corrupted, specially when you use both headers and footers with automatic insertion of page numbers, date, and time (as many of us "baldies-from-pulling-our-hair-out-with-MS-products" know).

If a Word or .RTF doc has become corrupted, rather than spending hours dinking with it in Office, I import it into StarOffice, then do a "save as" back into Word 97/2000 format - lo and behold, I then have a perfectly healthy Word document!

WORD OF CAUTION:

You WILL have to dink with some of the formatting once you're back in Word, as some things can be lost at times --for instance, some table settings like spacing between cells (and it's easy to fix). But the time spent tweaking it back to the way it was is WAY less, and far less frustrating, than trying to fix the corrupted document in Office!

CONCLUSION:

If you find that your Word or .RTF docs glitch fairly often, then do try out StarOffice as a cure. This alone is more than worth the asking price!

Summary: With a little time...
Review: This is an outstanding product at an unbelievable price. It is easily as strong as MS office, and considering that it is an all-in-one application, probably stronger. It works on virtually any platform and can read and save to any file format with something like 99% compatibility.

The only drawbacks are a not-so-user-friendly Help agent and a marginally high learning curve for some parts of the application. Some of the vocabluary used is different from what most MS users are used to, so the transition is a little tough. I also purchased the StarOffice 5.2 companion, which answers every question that has stumped me, though.

Once you get used to the desktop and working environment you will never go back to MS.

Summary: Good Product, Who Knows, 1st You Have to Install It!
Review: I purchased this full program from Amazon.com. I have tried for two days to install it (from an experienced user). I have had others who are very experienced in installing and running software on several different platforms. Nothing works. I am trying to install it on a Dell Latitude with Windows 98.

I have downloaded the patch available at the Sun Web site, no good. I have followed all the instructions over and over and over. No good. I have deinstalled, reinstalled. No good. I have read through reams of other similiar problems at the Sun Web site, no good.

I would love to be able to use StarOffice5.2. I did my homework first. It appears to be a great program. But what a hassle it has been trying to install it.

Again this is from an experienced user who has installed hundreds of other programs of ALL kinds on several different platforms and systems. But THIS installation has me stumped.

What happened to purchasing software, dropping in the CD, installing it, and simply running it. That's all I wanted. Instead, I have had one endless headache.

Summary: Easy and does it all.
Review: I loaded StarOffice5.2 on a Windodws 98 PC and love it. It takes a few clicks to get the hang of it, but it does anything you want, and it does it all from the same interface. I am writting this after simply typing in the web address to Amazon.com in the address bar, which opened the built-in browser window, boom! so it is like having all of the programs you use in one.

It has an Explorer sidebar, plus plenty of function specific button bars for wordprocessing, html editing, or spreadsheets, etc.

This is NOT a hard program to use. I thought it would be a hassle but wanted to try it, and I am glad I did. Matches Word in functions and features, and you don't get that "M$ overcharged me again because they can" feeling. It comes with a good manual and the price is GREAT. Enjoy.

Summary: What to say?
Review: Well I know a lot of people who have Star Office on their computer. They either still end-up buying Microsoft Office or uninstalling Star Office it self. But the price it-self is astounding. This product is for people who are doing essential things such as writing letter, and short documents. Most of the persons I talked have said that its little bit difficult use but you kind of eventually get the hang of it. But I'm really not into that, I would put that [money] aside and save put it towards saving for Microsoft Office or Works Suite which offers a lot of software for just [money]. But if you are using some other operating system apart from Windows such Linux, go for it because Microsoft won't be making any Office XP for this any time soon. Put it this way, Linux people buy it, Windows people it's optional.

Summary: Almost...
Review: Staroffice is a wonderful product. Free to download, works with the major filetypes (microsoft word 95/97/2k doc), and pretty bugfree. Only a few minor annoyances, like the Integrated environment, and some strangeness that makes my fonts larger than they should be on the screen (though they print nicely). I have confidence that staroffice 6.0 and openoffice (the opensource version of staroffice) will be fine products. They're already working very well with only a few bugs that I could see. All in all, if the financing, and interest in it remains, I don't see why anyone would continue to pay hundreds of dollars when a very good working one can be had for very little to free! I highly suggest this product, or downloading the free version.
