Summary: Fine Digital Enhancement Utility
Review: I used PhotoShop 6.0 briefly before upgrading to 7.01. The possibilities with 7.01 are near endless with this program for creativity. It's relatively fast and 176 MB in HD storage. Although, most of my time with PhotoShop is spent tweaking digital photos, which it does extremely well.I highly recommend buying. First-time buyers - Once you've bought the initial version of PhotoShop, the upgrades are not as painful to purchase. Buy still a 'must have' for photo (both film and digital) professionals and enthusiasts as well as Web and graphic designers.

Summary: Good product if you want to work in 8bit color
Review: I wish Adobe would get off there a** and upgrade the product to start working in 16 bit color. I am very disappointed in Adobe for not upgrading most tools to 16 bit color. The worst part is that the layers still do not work in 16 bit. The New healing Brush is a must have. I can only give this upgrade 3 Stars, due to the very small number improvements in the software. If you own Photoshop 6, this is a hard to justify upgrade, except for the Healing brush.

Summary: Warning: Windows version slow! Get the Mac OS X Version...
Review: I've had to evaluate Photoshop 7 running on Windows XP and Mac OS X. It runs significantly faster on OS X and offers more keyboard shortcuts, better color control, etc. Also, the ability to use AppleScript to automate events and processes makes the Mac OS X version the obvious choice for use in a production environment. Overall, it's not worth it to upgrade from Photoshop 5.5 or 6 unless you want to run it as a native app rather than in Classic mode on OS X.

Summary: Photoshop, as usual... the best!
Review: I've used Adobe Photoshop since day one and have tried and worked with all the versions that ever came out.... I can honestly say that they really outdid themselves this time. The new features make the program even more user-friendly than it already was and the interface is also very appealing. I'd recommend it to anyone who is serious about computer design. I know I am! Kudos Adobe!

Summary: YAWN!
Review: My favorite is the ability to save tool presets for every tool. Nothing much is new unless you are a professional Photoshop Illustrator (the brushes are much fancier). The healing tool is nice (but not much faster than experienced use of the Stamp). Mainly it is OSX. That is important and the reason why I bought it. However, there are no OSX drivers for any of my scanners (seven of them). So, be careful!

Summary: Verne REPENTS... re:pointless upgrade, 6 was better
Review: Ok, so I was wrong. Not the first time. After 3 months using 7 it has grown on me and now I like it. It is still "just Photoshop" so what's the big deal? But maybe the following review, written the first week I had the upgrade, was unwarrented. I'm sorry. PREVIOUS REVIEW: I make my living with Photoshop and this 7.0 upgrade is a joke. On some machines I went back to 6.0 by uninstalling 7. This has become like 1950's car styling--only difference year to year was different fins...Adobe did this for one reason; to bring in cash--not to make a work horse product any better.

Summary: Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Upgrade
Review: Photoshop remains my favorite painting program. I'm a Photoshop 6.0 veteran, been using it since it came out, and I've learned my way around pretty well. As an upgrade, I give 7.0 four stars. Why? There's just not that much more for that extra star. I was expecting a jump in features like the one between versions 5.5 and 6.0. Pretty much, they give you a new tool for repairing photos (this is great and worth it if you're interested in digital photography, of course: but for a web designer, it's useless), a few upgrades, and a prettier interface. As a web designer, I didn't find a whole lot more that's useful, so for the fellow web designers out there, it might not be worth it at all. But for the digital photographer with the extra money, grab it. That brush will probably be very useful to you. As a new program, without a previous installation of Photoshop, FIVE STARS. GET IT NOW. I can't stress this enough. Photoshop will be worth it if you're looking to do this professionally; it is THE graphic design program out there right now. If you're just a home user that wants to fix up a photo or two, I don't think it's worth the $600+ just for that.

Summary: Compelling new features
Review: There are tons of new features in Photoshop 7.0. Here are a few of the coolest and most compelling (admittedly, from the perspective of a web application developer). Note that this puppy is a resource hog in its default configuration. If you're running Photoshop 7.0 on a workstation with limited memory, you'll probably want to change the default settings so that it doesn't grab everything for itself. You can use the new File Browser to easily filter, rank and browse images on hard drives, CD-ROMs and removable media. File Browser combines the classic tree-view of folders and files with new thumbnail, preview and metadata windows. Yes, there are new brushes and tools. There are several aimed at making advanced photo retouching techniques easier for non-professionals, as well as some neat new brushes effects. If you use Photoshop a lot, you'll love the feature that allows you to save tool customizations as if they were separate tools. For web graphics folks, Photoshop provides cool new functionality for working with transparency in GIF files. Arbitrarily select a color and then make it transparent with a single mouse click. In addition, Photoshop 7.0 now offers dithered transparency, which makes it much easier to blend images with any background. Finally, ImageReady (included) now makes creating graphical rollovers and animations easier through the new Rollover palette. Plug-ins? We love plug-ins! There is an enhanced Liquify so that you can warp to your heart's content. The new Pattern Maker plug-in can be used to generate background images that should seamlessly tile. My experience with it is mixed. It is way cool when it works, but you may have to try several times to get the selection just right. There are lots of other new features, as well. All-in-all, Photoshop 7.0 represents a solid upgrade over version 6.0. -- Scott Loban
