Description:

EndNote 4.0 may be the cure for all that bibliographically ails you: this package is assuredly a one-stop source for researchers, students, and anyone else wishing to catalog some sort of library. Founded on the comfortable shortcuts and clicks that most Windows users are familiar with, text formatting and file functions are a breeze, and clicking does everything from sorting the indicated column to drag-and-drop copying from one library to another.

After a quick install, beginning a new library is a snap. Creating each new entry, or reference, has a nice rhythm to it. You'll maneuver through any number of fields (EndNote provides several dozen, and you may also add customized fields) by tabbing or clicking, and auto-completion will keep you moving along as the software recognizes past entries. EndNote allows for many reference windows to be open at once, coupled with a quick close-all keyboard shortcut. And no need to be manually saving after every entry: every time you change data, EndNote saves.

EndNote is well suited to handling professional bibliography work: each reference in a library can hold a total of 64,000 characters, or about 16 pages of text. Additionally, each library can grow to about 32,000 records, or about 32 megabytes.

After entering your references, you've created a venerable library for yourself, searchable and concise. You may also import reference data, which allows you to avoid rekeying any other bibliographic work you've already done in Refer, BibIX, ProCite, or tab-delimited data from spreadsheets, databases, and word-processing applications. Your library can also be exported to Word and WordPerfect documents and structured in any bibliographical format that you choose (complete with correct in-text reference citations). Options include standards like The Chicago Manual of Style and APA to lesser-known journal styles ranging from Advances in Agronomy to Yeast.

The only challenge when using EndNote is comprehending how powerful it is and exactly how much you, the bibliographer, can do with it. Additionally, using the connection files to search remote databases may at first feel awkward for those who have searched these sources directly. But once a connection is established, searching ensues through the EndNote search window, which is completely customizable. You can even add other databases as long as they are Z39.50-compliant.

A powerful application for academic, professional, and personal use, EndNote 4.0 is a complete resource for gathering and maintaining bibliographic references. --Emilie Dirks--This review was written for the full Windows version.
