Summary: Lame and annoying
Review: 1) Not only is the program core so old that it is a 640x480 pixel graphic, it will only run in full screen mode on XP. If your note book has a 1028x768 display, the fonts are all jagged and *very* difficult to read.

2) The credits role at the end of every session and lock up your computer for over a minute. The only way around it is to Ctrl-Alt-Del and click on End Task. REALLY ANNOYING.

3) You have to have the CD in your drive every time you start up. If you are on the road, have a spare minute to practice, and have left the CD at home, you are out of luck with Mavis

Make your voice count in the battle for decent software. Don't buy this program.

Summary: Not "Adult" Enough For Me
Review: Before purchasing this, I read the reviews and I read the software description. Unfortunately, the content wasn't 'adult' enough. This is good for kids to teenagers. The games are like video games. The music drove me nuts & I turned it off, but then when the lesson went to a game, I had no music. One of the games is to type with rhythm - couldn't hear the music. Turned sound back on; couldn't figure out rhythm & I'm not musically challenged. Also, we have a large monitor & I found the system's onscreen font difficult to read; it was not all that clear. I was "bleeped" for typing a 'one' when the 'l' looked the same. Drove me crazy. But, like I said, this would be a good program for the younger set & the beginning typist. My goal is to maintain my 65wpm and possibly increase.

Summary: complaint --- rules about space between sentences
Review: Dear Broderbund:

I am in a computer training program and we just installed Mavis Beacon 12 in our computers (7 in our lab). My first complaint is the fact that we have to leave the computer disk in the disk reader in order to be able to use Mavis Beacon. If you take the disk out of the tower, even though you have downloaded the disk,
Mavis is not there to call up and use.

Another complaint is the rule about 2 spaces between sentences is not followed. Mavis consistently has only 1 space between sentences. This is a little irritating to say the least.

Also, it takes a lot of time for a game to come up. You spend a lot of time looking at a black screen and you lose your momentum.

I do enjoy using Mavis Beacon to improve my typing skills and speed but feel these problems should be addressed.

Thank you for your time.

Summary: The cover doesn't lie!
Review: I bought this software on 8/16/2002, in effort to boost my typing skills. I type primarily with one hand due to my disability; and I needed to refresh myself on the techniques of one-handed typing (which I learned when I was a junior in high school 5 years ago.) Before purchasing this software, I was at a speed of a mere 12 words a minute, I needed to get back up to at least 30 wpm, which is half the speed I was in high school. Today, 8/20/2002, I am up from 12 wpm to 30-35 wpm! I am confident that within the next few days I will be back to 60 wpm! The promise of "Better typing guaranteed' is no understatement! Buy this software if you need to improve your typing skills! Included on the software is a manual for one-handed typing techniques written by Lilly Waters, so if you are one handed typist in search of good software this is for you! I have tried other programs and nothing compares to this! It is worth the price, hands down!

Summary: Review of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 12
Review: I have purchased two versions of this program - Mavis Beacon 10 and Mavis Beacon 12 -- and have encountered the same problem with each. That is, both programs froze at the same point --the last beginner quiz before advancing to intermediate. In spite of the work by 2 computer service technicians, including email exchanges with the the parent company, the problem could not be solved. This is a defective product. I am in the process of requesting a refund. I have now purchased Typing Tutor 10 and am hoping for better results.

Summary: Don't waste your time!
Review: I was so relieved to read other reviews here about the bugs in this program!

I'm a home schooler and bought this program last summer to teach my two daughters how to type, but it has been nothing but a headache--constant crashes make it impossible to go much further than the first few lessons. Look elsewhere for typing software!

Summary: A Poor Typing Tutor Program
Review: I was very disappointed with this program. Problems:

1) You have to put in the cdrom each time you run the program.
2) You have to watch the intro credits and exit credits each time you run it - there is no way to bypass them. This adds almost two minutes of useless fluff to every session.
3) The graphics and sound are distracting, and are not helpful in any way. There are 3D graphics showing finger placement that I found confusing. I just couldn't tell which finger was doing what. The program pauses every so often to give fairly useless comments.

After a few lessons I gave up. I've tried other typing tutor programs in the past, and I'll go back to them.

Review: If you started with mavis 5 and your still buying them through mavis 12, maybe you should just give up on learning to type....

Summary: Defective Software
Review: Like the other reviewer Mavis Beacon 12 froze at the last beginner lesson. Rather than mess around with this obviously defective product I'm trying another developers'. My computer is an IBM T40 running the latest version of XT Professional.
