Description:

If you're looking to go to graduate school, you know you probably have to take a standardized test. Even if you're not sure which test to take, the good news is that with Kaplan's Higher Score series, you only have to buy one package. Perhaps if you sample all three tests, your decision on which field of study to enter will be that much easier. While you're at it, Kaplan will try to make the experience fun.

Regardless of the test you'll take, the program starts out with a tour of the features. These features include a personalized study program, sample tests with as-real-as-can-be test-taking environments, games, flash cards, links to Kaplan's Web site, test-taking hints and strategies, and admissions information on choosing a school and submitting your applications.

For example, if you're preparing for the GMAT, you'll start by taking a diagnostic test and entering your probable test date. From that point, Kaplan's program sets up a course of study based on your weak points, and provides lessons and test-taking tips. All along the way, you can skip lessons, retake lessons, or take a practice test. For the GMAT, Kaplan offers four simulated CAT tests, nine math practice tests, and nine verbal practice tests. You can also study using more than 200 flash cards, 15 math review lessons, and six question-type tutorials. With a detailed scoring analysis that shows not only how you did on each section, but how often you changed right answers to wrong ones, this portion of the program offers exceptionally strong coaching.

The admissions section has really come a long way from your days of applying to undergraduate school. Brimming with current selection statistics and more than 400 links to graduate schools, it may even help you find a school you never considered or never thought you could get into.

The deluxe version also comes with Kaplan To Go GMAT and GRE prep software for Palm OS, and Newsweek business and law school admission guides, with expert advice on getting into the business or law school of your choice.

After taking the obligatory diagnostic test, Kaplan puts you on a set course of study, or allows you to deviate from that path and spend time on the subjects that appeal to you. While the cartoons, music, games, puns, and guides may seem more appropriate for a small child, we have to respect any attempt at making a standardized test something less than dull as dirt. Any student can appreciate it, and you can turn the sound off if you want. --Kendra Hayden
