Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great gothic
Review: I really enjoyed this Susan Howatch book. Despite the formulaic plot, the characterisation of the heroine and the hero are slightly out of the ordinary. In the midst of the murders and detection, the romance is nicely developed. The heroine is quite young and childish but the hero, Axel is approriately mysterious! A well written Gothic read and the only historical one out of the six short novels that Howatch wrote before her masterpiece Penmarric was published.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Gothic Classic- Synopsis
Review: Marianne's letter never reached her brother. It was stolen & destroyed. Ever since Marianne had married Axel Brandson, strange things had happened. Theirs was no love match. Axel needed to be married to inherit his father's fortune. But it was not until Marianne arrived at the isolated family estate in Sussex that she realized the inheritance was clouded by murder.... and that the murderer was still nearby, waiting to strike again.
