Rating: Summary: Triumph Over Darkness Review: This book was in one word, inspirational. An African American woman, living in the deep, and In poverty learns to become and individual. Celie over comes child abuse, spousal abuse, and having her children taken from her. The man she knows as her father rapes her and gives her children away. No woman should have to go throught what she went through. This book is ideal for an audience of ages 14 and up. There are some graphic details about her rape. As I read this book I felt anger and frustration for her. She is constantly put down and told she could never be an individual. Her husband doesn't love her. He just needed someone to raise his children. He has his mistress living under the same roof, though Celie becomes friends with her. Everyone calls her ugly and people just use her. The style of this book, written in journal form, gave the book a more personable feel. As I read the book I shared the same emotions as Celie. The diction was acceptable to the character being raw and misspelled, yet made it hard to understand what the book was saying. For example, "She ast me bout the first one whose it is? I say God's. I don't know no other man or what else to say." The book is so inspirational to me. She faces challenges and overcomes them and she still sees the beauty of life. I highly recommend this book to women, or to Anyone who needs an inspiration.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful writing, beautiful story Review: Alice Walker has a creative writing style and is fabulous at relating to her audience. I would say that the ideal audience for the book The Color Purple would be mature high school students and above. It appeals to all ages because of the deep content. Her writing style is interesting because of the diction she uses in the journals written by the main character. She talks in the fashion of how an uneducated women would have spoken during the time period of the book. This use of words helps to enhance the story as well as inform the readers. The diction enhances the story because throughout the book the main character's vocabulary increases and her grammar becomes better. It helps me to see inside of the story. For example, when the main character receives letters from her more educated sister, she takes the letters and uses them to educate herself. Her writings then become more advanced. The book is beautifully written and stirred many emotions in me. I felt like I related to the main character because of all of the decisions she has had to make. For example, she must gain confidence and learn how to fend for herself. She must also decide what and how she wants to live the rest of her life. Everyone has been faced with the difficult decision of choosing a path of life. We face choices every day that affect the rest of our lives. I learned that I need to search for what my passion is in life, and once I find it I need to go for it. In the book the main character uses love and the changes that it brings to lead her life. I would highly recommend this book because it teaches the audience so much about themself. Overall, it was a book that I enjoyed both technically as well as content wise.
Rating: Summary: Greatest Book Written to God. Review: The Color Purple is an outstanding novel by Alice Walker. It is written in diary form as a conversation between the main character, Celie, and God that takes place after the Civil War. Between her cruel husband, her estranged sister (Nettie), and the son and daughter she believed to be dead, Celie's leads a fairly hard life, but maintains a positive attitude about it. Then Celie meets her husband's lover - a flamboyant blues singer, Shug Avery, who cannot be ruled. Shug teaches Celie how to make herself happy and how to demand self-respect. Thanks to Shug, Celie learns to enjoy life, and begins making pants. Celie learns is that life is what she makes of it. Walker does an excellent job describing her characters' strengths and weaknesses. They are real and the story line is realistic. Walker received the Pulitzer Prize for this book, which shows just how remarkable it really is. This is an excellent book because, though fiction, you become involved with the characters.
Rating: Summary: Can't put the book down Review: The Color Purple was a great book, which showed that a woman can get through real tough times and find happiness. The way it is written, in a journal type of way, gets straight to what the character was thinking and gets to the point. i was unable to put the book down and got me to think that if you want happiness you make it yourself. this book teaches you so much and gets you wanting to read it again and again. The narrator goes through so much in the book, from abuse from her dad to her husband, getting raped, being pregnant and getting her children taken away from her, losing her sister and much more. But then everything turn around when she meets this woman, Shug Avery, who helps her find her voice and speak out. That's when she starts to find happiness. This is a truly great book that everyone should read.
Rating: Summary: How to Love the Real Color Purple Review: Who ever thought one could learn so much from others? Alice Walker, author of the fiction book, The Color Purple believed, "'Even though I write books and believe very much in books, the truth is, as you all know, we have become a fairly illiterate culture... In order to communicate real things that you need to say to people, you also need to think of something visual and I do this with films'" (Alice Walker, talking to Julie Mills in an article entitled Walker Shares Personal Moments [1996]) Walker portrayed the color purple as something that needed to be communicated to people and through her novel and films she did so. The Color Purple is a heroic story of two sisters Nettie and Celie whom were separated by their father, and both who look for courage in life. The novel begins, "I have always been a good girl. Maybe you can give me a sign letting me know what is happening to me." (Walker 3) The story is written in diary form beginning with Celie writing to god. Celie and Nettie enjoy each others company, both of whom grew up together and were beaten by their father. Celie is taken away and married after her father chooses Mr.___, and unidentified man. Celie begins her forced marriage with this man. Celie comes to visit her and is then turned away and they are forced not to ever see each other again. Then the pages begin to turn, Mr.___, Celie's husband goes and picks up the towns prostitute, Shug Avery. This is the time in the novel in which Walker decided to let love take over and where Celie finds the true passions of people and life. As Nettie and Celie are living their own lives, they continue to write to each other, sending letters but not receiving, because Mr.____ will not allow Celie to read the letters. Walker does a great job to keep the reader turning those pages, his diary format keeps the reader reading, because Nettie would write to Celie and then the following letter would be Celie writing back to Nettie, etc. The story continues with struggles of everyday life of the character Celie who is beaten. She is then changed from two characters Sophia, Harpo's wife ( Harpo is Celie's son) and Shug Avery. Both of these ladies show Celie to love to laugh and be herself. Walker portrays the theme and message of communication through the love of the a color, and being able to love everything in life, just as much as one would love the color purple. The author, Walker, compares Celie and Nettie's life to the color purple. She compares them in the way that they both love each other and want to love, live and laugh just as the color purple is loved. Walker did an amazing job in tying in the color purple with the way that the girls wanted to live their lives, with courage and hope for their future. If you like the fast pace, page turning type of juicy novel, this is possibly the book for you. Both sentimental and disturbing at times, this novel truly leaves a message clear to all readers.
Rating: Summary: The Color Purple a Colorful Classic Review: I haven't read many books in my lifetime, probably because reading seems boring to me, but The Color Purple held my attention until the very last word of the very last page. Alice Walker really outdid herself on this one! The Color Purple has sex, lesbianism and violence, what more could you ask for? The story makes you cry as it rips your heart out but then just when it seems so bad something funny makes you laugh and you continue reading. This award wining novel of 1982 gets a high mark in my opinion. The Color Purple was set in the deep south at a time when whites felt superior to blacks. Life was anything but easy for Celie but she knew how to survive. Celie never knew what it was like to be loved and the one person who did love her and whom she loved, her sister Nettie, was taken away from her. All that changed when Celie met one flamboyant blues singer called Shug. When reading this book I found that it was very easy to get caught up in the character's emotions and feel for them. I found myself hurting when the characters hurt and being scared for them because I could actually develop a relationship with each and every character. The plot seemed as if it were all tangled up in the beginning of the story and slowly it untangled itself until everything made sense and fit together perfectly at the end. As the plot unraveled it revealed a story line that would seem nothing short of miraculous. The way that the book is set up is extremely creative. The entire book is written as if it were a collection of diary entries written by Celie, the main character. No real chapters exist, only writings. This style makes the book fun to read because the book keeps my attention. On a negative note the book was sometimes very hard to follow however, the language of the book did have its positive side. Because it was written with improper English and slang terms from the deep south, it was very common to read a series of sentences and have no idea what the author was trying to say. I was somewhat unfamiliar with the way people talked in the south during the time this book was set in. I found myself pouring over one word for ten minutes trying to figure out what it was. The form that the book was written in does, however, help to develop the characters in more detail. Sometimes I could actually hear a character speaking a certain line of text in my head because I got so used to that particular character's language. Over all the color purple is a heartwarming tale that any African American or anyone for that matter can thoroughly enjoy. It's no wonder that the book won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the American Book Award for Fiction when it was first published back in 1982. It was the award winning novel of the year. I would definitely recommend this book because my reading experience was very enjoyable. I would recommend the book to a mature adult because it contains some sexual content and bad language. I feel that a female would enjoy The Color Purple a great deal more than a male would, simply because I believe that a female could relate more to the main character.
Rating: Summary: The Aspects Of The Color Purple Review: I have recently finshed reading the book, The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The book its self had a very emotional impact on me because it shows how a young african american women was treated in the early 20th century. I took a second to realize the diffrence of how an african american women was treated then and how an african women may be treated now and in some aspects it really is not too diffrent. The book is mainly about a young african gurl by the name of ceily who practicly had her whole life tooken from her as a little girl to nearly the age of thirty. The Color Purple takes place in the south and spans thirty years in the life of Celie, a poor southern black woman.Alice Walker portrays the life of an innocent girl who is put through rape, physical abuse, teenage marriage, child birth and emotional abuse. Celie started out as a slave to her own family. Her mother is killed, and Celie and her siblings are raised by their father. Celie haveing to go through rape, child marriage, child birth etc. was mainly caused by the actions of her father. The words and text used in the book put you in the mind frame of living in the south in the the early 1900`s.Its as if the actually took ceilie out the book and marked her word for word i was definetly moved by the book. I was more so moved by the strength of ceilie because i can compare her life to a life of a modern day citizen.I recommend this book to anyone who can handle explicit use of words and the quality of a good author. I can definetly see my self reading more of Alice Walkers books in the future.
Rating: Summary: The Color Purple Analysis Review: The inspiring book The Color Purplw is about a young gurl forced to live a life that she is forced to live. This novel shows the harsh treatment blacks of any sex had to endore. The story takes place in the early 1900`s where blacks were forced work long hours just to make ends meat. The book starts of with a young girl by ther name of ceilie who is burdened to cooking, cleaning, and taking care of many children all at once.To take her mind off of the surroundings she wouyld often write letters to god. Ceilie grows up in georgia and some would say she was quite illiterate but she would soon prove them all wrong.Ceilie was forceed to live in a house with her father who craved sex almost at any minute or any time. It was oubvious to use the word incest when you think about Ceilies father. Honestly, i feel that this book made me appreciate the world that we are living in today.Having to have lost a mother ands live with a father such as him must have been extremly hard. I feel anyone who is into books whick are long and time consuming will enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: An excellent novel!! Review: I have to say I really enjoyed reading this novel. It was well written, although a little difficult to get used to the deliberate bad grammer (which is part of the plot). Once I got the hang of it, it was an excellent book. Very unique!! I found that this novel created a mixture of emotions in me. In the beginning, hatred and anger, and throughtout the novel joy, happiness and pride for the main character, Celie. I have to admit, this novel had me almost crying, and I don't often cry in novels. But this wasn't a sad cry, it was on overwhelming sense of happiness for Celie. I don't want to spoil the novel too much, so I'll let you experience it for yourself. The only thing that I was disappointed with, was about 2 or 3 of the letters (they are letters instead of chapters) became a little boring to me. Just hold out, until you get past that part and it gets good again! I recommend this novel!! I really enjoyed reading it and I think it shines a light on the strength of each and everyone of us in the world. The power to make our lives better for ourselves, and to enjoy life, no matter what we have gone through. Well, I hope this helps a little, on a more personal experience, instead of the plot line (because that just gives stuff away). I hope you take the time to read this and enjoy it as much as I did!!
Rating: Summary: Walker creates a tone challenged by no other author Review: Alice Walker's ability to convey the hardship felt by Celie throughout the novel is incredible. Walker is capable of putting the emotions Celie feels, keeping a realistic quality but allowing for creativity and for a storyline to develop. Walker clearly demonstrates her talent by creating such an emotionally powerful piece.
