Rating: Summary: Can you HANDLE it? Review: The Color Purple is a fantastic novel that uses great literary devices. I would not recommend it to many students that are forced to read it by the government because of the graphic nature of the book in the dealings with rape and homosexuality. I do recommend this to anyone who is mature enough to handle the literature and who can understand the greatness of the work.
Rating: Summary: Alice Walker has the artist's touch. Review: Magnificent! The characters undergo human metamorphosis like I've never see before! Every character is fully developed and each one plays a significant role. From the beginning Celie has your sympathy, but by the end pride and joy are all you can feel for her. (You'll have to read the book to find out why!) This book, however, should not be read by children who cannot handle the depictions of sexual and physical abuse. I don't want to give too much away, so here's one last statement: If you like novels with realistic, reviting plots; characters you feel like you've known for years; historical significance; and an amazingly human depiction of the ever present hope in life (even in a society ruled by injustice) then log out and race to your nearest book store!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful trip to the past Review: The Color Purple was a journey in itself, back to when women had to fight for what they wanted...it is a great expirence seeing it through the two sisters, Nettie and Celie. I recommend this book to anyone that is mature enough to endure the sexual and graphic content. It is a MUST read.
Rating: Summary: This is an excellent book Review: One of my friends suggested that I read this book. I didn't think that it would be very interesting because it was set in the early 1900s, but I was mistaken. This book is a must read.
Rating: Summary: The Color Purple Review: Alice Walker is a master of bringing her readers into her work! This story defines what black women of the 1930's had to endure. Walker's character detail and vivid cultural settings come across extremely real. I found myself cheering Celie on, and traveling with her through her journey to escape the man who ends up being her hero in disguise. A must read, for sure!
Rating: Summary: Unforgettably Unique; Must Read Review: The Color Purple, by Alice Walker, is a superb book that you absolutely must read. Ms. Walker uses two unforgettably unique styles in writing this book. The first unique style you'll notice is the old "southern black" dialect because it's evident on the very first page. You'll also see the second unique style on page one; however, it will take a few more pages before you notice the entire book is written in the form of letters. The letters seem authentic as you're reading them because the author uses the dialect so effectively.Although the main character, Celie writes the vast majority of the letters, there are just enough letters to Celie from her sister, Nettie. Nettie's letters to Celie make the story much more interesting by adding some excitement as they describe Nettie's missionary life in Africa. Besides adding excitement, the letters from Nettie provide a break in what would otherwise be Celie telling the entire story. The sisters' letters are brilliantly written in a first person perspective that draws you closer to the characters as they share with you their thoughts and feelings. It's almost like the letters were written to you and you've known the characters your whole life. Once you start reading this book, you will not want to put it down. The story will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride. Be forewarned there are several hills on this ride because Alice Walker is full of surprises. For example, you'll be lifted to the top of the tallest hill when Nettie runs away from her abusive father at home to come live with her beloved sister, Celie. Hold on tight because the rapid descent comes suddenly when Ceilie's husband kicks Nettie out for not giving in to his frequent sexual advances. The two sisters did not know that this was just the beginning of a very long and emotional separation. I would recommend this fine book to anyone who is mature enough and open-minded enough to read stories containing a few, sometimes graphic, references to incest, rape, and lesbianism. Please note that I said a few references to these illegal and controversial subjects because they are infrequent. These sexual acts or preferences are not what the story is about. If you're mature enough and open-minded enough to get past the occasional sexual content, you'll thoroughly enjoy reading this fine book.
Rating: Summary: Very enjoyable, capturing book Review: This book brought tears to my eyes, made me laugh, made me a little sick feeling, and left me with a good feeling at the end when Nettie came home. I enjoyed reading the book and couldn't put it down at some points. The book makes the movie look dull and sometimes boring. I like the book a lot better than I liked the movie. Even though Whoppi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey do an excelent job in the movie. If you also liked the book, please e-mail me!
Rating: Summary: C'mon... gimmie something with substance..... Review: Yeah... it is a book like a narrative journal. Yeah... it discusses "culture." Yeah... it makes me sick. It was tolerable.... but after awhile, it got old. Somewhere around page 30. If you have something else to read instead, don't read this one. Just another example of how pop culture tries to infect what quality is.
