Summary: I couldn't wait to breath
Review: This is a very relaxed story of 2 African American women and one teenager. Moxi a divorced mom trying to raise her daughter Zadi, while teethering on the brink of depression.

Norma, wife, mother and bestfriend of Moxi since college face some very hard truths that puts hers and Moxi's friendship on the line.

Zadi, Moxi's daughter has to deal with peer pressure. Making a decision about sex, she would not normally make under different circumstances. Zadi tells us her story from her diary.

One incident changed the lives of six people, infidelity caused a strain on a friendship, lies dampered a relationship, and depression caused a suicide.

I think as a debut Patricia did a good job of writing about the things that effect us all: sins of our mothers, growing up and learning the power to forgive.

Summary: Captures Life
Review: This is one of the best books I have read this year. This book is for all teens and sistahs everywhere. This book has a lesson for everyone. Moxie lets readers know life of a single mom and how divorce can affect a sistah. Norma teaches us how to lose love, find love, and how to restore love. Zadia lets our young sistahs know what could happen if you do decide to go over to the rough neck side. Zadia displays life from a real teen point of view. She also lets girls know exactly the feelings you experience when you decide you are ready to leave the "v" world and become a woman. I highly recommend this book.

Summary: Debut Novel Breaks New Ground
Review: Using a teenager's daily journal to tell a large part of her insightful story of the sacred bonds of friendship between women, debut novelist Patricia Elam breaks new ground. Fifteen-year-old Zadie, her thoughts, dreams, joy and pain, is one of the most credible characters in this emotionally-wrenching story of the power of female friendship.

This authentic peek inside the head of this sensistive, contemporary teenager gives the book a unique flavor and should prove a valuable asset to anyone, parent, teacher, etc. who deals with adolescents on a daily basis. Using Zadie as a vehicle to tell her story, adds a vivid quality to the lives of the two main characters and makes us invest ourselves fully in their captivating tale. Breathing Room is a welcome addition to any 2001 list of innovative literary fiction!

Summary: LOVED THIS BOOK!
Review: Wonderful novel!!! I'm from DC and loved reading a book that vividly (and truthfully) described where I live. The story was written well and I just did not want the story to end. It's one of those books that you savor and you enjoy it to the last page. I would love to see what happens with all of the characters (esp. Zadi) in a follow-op/sequel.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Hope the author reads this
Review: You better be working hard on your follow-up novel because this one was so enjoyable. I feel it transcends age, gender, and racial lines as I initially felt I had little in common with these three women. As the narrative grew, I just KNEW them and mourned the end of their tale.

Although I'm constantly reading, this is the first time I have taken the time to offer any sort of review. Thanks for the wonderful time.
