Rating: Summary: Waaaaaaaaay too long Review: Yes, the book had an interesting storyline, however, it could have been told in about 250-300 pages. There was NO need for the book to be as long as it was. Sometimes, when you have too many details, you lose your audience and your audience forgets what your point was in the first place. I mean, did I really need to visualize exactly how Vonette's house was decorated? Not really. That information was not relevant. There were constant examples of too many details that I actually started skimming my way through until I got to something relevant. I even read another book while trying to finish this book. The ONLY reason I finished this book is because my job is very slow during the summer months so I had a lot of free time. If you have lots of free time with nothing to do, by all means, read this book. If you're looking for a quick read that holds your interest, keep looking.
Rating: Summary: Awesome, well-written, and worth it to the very end! Review: My book club selected this book as our June '03 selection and I was dreading the 500+ pages. I finished the book in 2 1/2 weeks and it was worth it. It's been awhile since I've read Bebe Moore Campbell, but I forgot how well she writes. There's a lot in the book (love, reparations, friendship, relationships, forgiveness, and addictions). Her writing style is awesome. Bebe takes her time with this novel and, rightfully so, the characters are well-developed. She bridges the generation gap that is throughout the story, making the ending powerful. I just thoroughly enjoyed this book. There's a lot of fiction being published these days targeted at African-Americans and some of the novels are written without much thought or substance. Bebe Moore Campbell continues to deliver well-written novels, great characters, and a great story.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Read Review: A fan of Campbell, I passed over this book on mnay trips and now i regret it and wished I would have read this book much ealier. This book has a wonderful lesson with characters that seem as though they are part of your life. This is a must read for everyone.
Rating: Summary: Worth The Read Review: You are going to love this book. It's a very complex but you can understand it. I Love the characters. It takes you back to the 60's and 70's. You will definatley learn the errors of your ways. This is a well written book. It's worth the 600 n something pages.
Rating: Summary: Interesting though not her best Review: This book started out promising, however took somewhat of a nosedive about 200 pages in. The reason why this book moves at the rate it does is, and why its so lengthy is because there are about 8 different character plots that Campbell painstakingly tries to develop and eventually tie everything together.Overall not a bad read. If you want a great Bebe Moore Campbell book, I would suggest Your Blues Aint Like Mine - her best in my opinion.
Rating: Summary: What A Great Book Review: Pages' book selection for the month of March was Bebe Moore Campbell's What You Owe Me. In this novel, she takes a deep look into the lives of characters connected through career and friendship. Ms. Campbell invites the reader to look honestly at relationships and offers an open portrayal of life issues that transcend time, gender and race. The book considers the similarities and differences among racial groups as they confront racism and the demons of their past. Members of the Pages Readers Group found this book to be intriguing although a bit slow at times. Overall Bebe Moore Campbell's ability to detail the inner lives of her characters engages the readers and provides a thought provoking opportunity to explore race relations, the definition of family and the true meaning of success.
Rating: Summary: A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR LIBRARY COLLECTION Review: This book is well written. It's one of those books that you don't want to put down because you feel like you'll miss something. It makes you feel like you were there and towards the end, when you know it's about to end, it makes you want more. Very enjoyable book.
Rating: Summary: Good Read Review: This was a very well written book. It makes you really feel that you were there. It is very lengthy but it was worth reading.
Rating: Summary: Can't finish it!!! Review: I'm at page 150 and have decided to take a break from this novel. I can't keep going. The novel starts off slow, but it is interesting when Hosanna's character is narrating the story. When Matriece's character takes over the story seems to go downhill and I'm bombarded with substories which are boring and seemingly irrelevant to the central theme of the book. Maybe I'll come back to it later or slowly try to finish it, but for now I'm moving on to another book!!
Rating: Summary: Bebe Owes Me More Than This... Review: I read this book when it 1st came out. I was on a cruise and it was one of the few books in the ship's library. This book is entirely too long. You can pretty much predict what is going to happen next throughout the story. I continued reading it only because I felt that it would pick-up. It never did. I'm in a book club and when it came my turn to pick the next book I told them we shouldn't waste time with this one.
