Rating: Summary: House Under Snow Review: House Under Snow is a hauntingly beautiful book that explores the conflict between expectation and desire in a family of women. The tension of opposite forces constantly at work--a young widowed mother who cannot escape the desires that shaped her, her daughters'subsequent struggle to come of age, the juxtaposition of their troubled house against suburban expectations--makes this novel wise and compelling, sad and triumphant. As a poet, Ms. Bialosky fills her book with rich, lyrical language and the power of her observations which are sharp, knowing and profound. I loved this book and narrator Anna's voice stayed in my head long after I'd finished it.
Rating: Summary: House Under Snow~ Review: House Under Snow is the story of the Crane family, told by the middle daughter Anna. This story is a look at Lilly Crane, the mother, who is leading a life of depression after she loses her husband when he is only 30, and how Lilly attempts to go on with life and raise her three daughters, Ruthie, Anna & Louisa.Unfortunately for Lilly, she can't seem to recover from her husband's death, and thus creates a very dysfunctional home life for her 3 girls. I think Jill Bialosky has true talent as a writer as she succinctly captures the emotions and pains that her characters experience. I think the negative to this book is that all it is about is a huge cycle of dysfunction, which some may find rather depressing and the ending left me somewhat unsatisfied. That aside, it was an easy and entertaining book to read, the writing was well done, and I would certainly read other books by this author.
Rating: Summary: House Under Snow Review: I am in the middle of this one right now. The characters seem realistic, particularly the mother, Lilly and the feelings of Anna the daughter with regard to her mother- BUT, this is a tad of a slow moving book for my taste. Certain themes keep cropping up over and over, and I'm not sure where the book is headed. I still have 100 pages to go, s maybe it will pick up. So far it's average. I just finished "The Lovely Bones" though and that's a tough act to follow.
Rating: Summary: Stunning and Tragic Review: I enjoyed this book. The story line was easy to follow and the characters were easy to get to know and like/dislike. It makes you stop and wonder just how many kids are surviving in the same dysfuntion the Crane girls grew up in. Great book to take on a plane or read before going to bed, as it's easy to pick up and start again.

Rating: Summary: Stunning and Tragic Review: I finished reading this book several weeks ago and I find that it still haunts me. I loved it and could completely identify with Anna. There is nothing more horrible than the "ultimate" betrayal. The betrayal of one's own mother. For those readers who did not give the book favorable reviews because of the editing and grammar....get a life and learn to enjoy things just for the entertainment. It is too bad that you live in a world that is not perfect. You must be exhausted from correcting everything around you!

Rating: Summary: One of the Most Boring Books I've read in years. Review: I read this book and thought I'd read it before. It is a genre book: misery in the family. On top of that, the book is repetious; the same thing happens again and again. The mother rallies, then falls apart. I always finish a book I start, but now I'm reconsidering that rule.
Rating: Summary: One of the Most Boring Books I've read in years. Review: I really enjoyed this book. After starting the book, I didn't think I would like it, but I soon couldn't put it down. The story goes back and forth in time very smoothly, making it even more of a page-turner. The language is beautiful and modern at the same time. The characters are very real and I could relate to each one of them in a different way.
