Rating: Summary: Entertaining! Review: I liked this book - I think it is a "Bridget Jones" for the married with kids set. If you enjoy books written for single girls, but sometimes have a little trouble relating, you'll love this. Entertaining and easy to read!
Rating: Summary: gotta like a book where a heroine admits she's not nice Review: I liked this book a surprising amount, when I was sure I was all "Brit-chicked out". Clara Hutt is big and fat, mother of two boys, wife for 8 years. She's smug that she's married, but she is jealous of her unmarried friends. She is a part-time freelance writer (of course --- no other careers allowed in England) and mucks up an interview with a primo ballerino Sam Dunphy. Her mother Kate is getting married for the 4th time. Clara loves her husband, but she's not in lovce with him. She also misses her old "pre-wedding" self and wonders how she'll get it back. But she's not an idiotic sniveling whiner either. She doesn't launch massive campaigns to overhaul her life. She just IS. That's what makes her likable and entertaining. That and the fact that she lets you know she is not nice -- more than a couple of times -- right from the beginning. Read this book. You'll forget it's supposed to be Brit-chick-lit -- because it's so smart and real.
Rating: Summary: HILARIOUS Review: I made the mistake of starting to read this book on thebus to work - i could not stop laughing, and eventually had to give up as i could feel myself becoming hysterical. it is HILARIOUS. I loved it. had just about given up on the "funny, clever, modern womens life" style of book as I found them all really similar, but this one really was exceptional..... have already recommended it to my friends..
Rating: Summary: Very fun read! Review: I really enjoyed this light comedy. Clara is married (NOT a book about singletons, for a change!), and views her husband as somewhat of a mystery. She's happy and yet . . . her marriage has not really brought her a happily ever after. It doesn't help that her neurotic mother nags her about her weight (and how wonderful to have a plump heroine who really doesn't give a fig if she is overweight), and that she feels she has to compete with super moms who get all dolled up just to drop their kids off at school (with gourmet lunches and home baked goodies, natch). Clara is funny and likeable, and I really identified with her. Every other book about twenty or thirtysomething women seems to deal with finding Mr. Right. This book is about what to do when you've already found him . . . and life still isn't quite what you expected.
Rating: Summary: Was promising but failed to deliver Review: I started to read this book and I just loved the main character Clara. I loved her outlook on parenting, her honesty and her spunk. This book had some great one liners and out out loud moments. In the end, I felt like the finish of the story was rather boring and nothing really good/exciting ever happened. I really liked India Knight's writing style and humor with an edge. Although it wasn't the best story, it was still somewhat enjoyable in areas. Good for a quick read.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: I strongly recommend you read it. I laughed out loud more than I have with any other book. I was constantly bugging my roommates to listen to me read funny pieces aloud.
Rating: Summary: time to clear the table and wash the dishes Review: i was somewhat disappointed with this novel. it seemed long and draggy at times. i guess after seeing the cover i was expecting it to be a lot more fun and not so downtrodden as it was. clara seemed displeased with most of her life (right there was a downer). there were some funny one-liners throughout, however this was not as light and airy as i expected. i found clara's relationship with her mother quite sad. her mother was a domineering, sarcastic, critical woman. clara tried hard to please her mom, but to no avail. i thought it was sad, as well, what happened to her and her husband. everybody seemed so complacent, but we found out differently. for me the book started to pick up with about 40 pages left. anyway, it was not a light read for me and i have decided to stick with only the hysterically funny novels, as life is too heavy as it is, and since i read for fun i don't need to read about it.
Rating: Summary: Waste Of Time Review: I've had this book on my bookshelf for awhile, and finally decided to read it since I was in the mood for something light and quick. I am pleased to say that My Life on a Plate ended up being such fun to read. I thought the main character was hilarious, and her take on marriage and motherhood was as honest as it gets. My Life on a Plate is more of a portrait than a novel. Author India Knight provides a winning character study of a wife and mother and the things that happen to her day-to-day. Clare Hutts is a part-time magazine writer who has been married to her husband, Richard, for the past eight years. And while their marriage doesn't seem so bad, Clare can't stop thinking that something is missing. Not kids -- they have two small boys -- and certainly not the fairy tale lifestyle -- financial security, a beautiful house, and working from home. Maybe it's the fact that Richard doesn't ever feed the boys breakfast, or perhaps it's because they aren't romantic anymore -- whatever the reason, Clare's journey throughout this novel is eye-opening at best. I really enjoyed reading this book. Clare is a hilarious character, and her insights on marriage are as honest as they are funny. I felt the tone of the book was consistent throughout, and by the time the last page rolled around, I knew it couldn't end any other way. India Knight did an excellent job with this one, and I look forward to her future books.
