Rating: Summary: Being a Single Mom isn't easy Review: Omar Tyree has done an excellent job with character Denise and allowing readers to understand the life of a single mother. Single Mom was very endearing and strong-willed. Tyree allows the reader to get a better understanding of Denise and her boys. The life she have to lead and the pain that she go through trying to teach her boys to be men, a job that she can not do. Her life is complicated but she still tries and lives her life but it is hard when she have her son's father acting irresponsible. Reading Single Mom allow for those who doesn't know about the life a single mother and also to appreciate the best things in life. Most single mothers can relate to Tyree's book. It is very hard trying to be a working single mother of boys not saying girls are any easier but in Denise case I felt her pain. Being a mother is a full time job in itself. Than her needing a man to protect and provide for her family is one thing. But to help to help her with her loneliness is another. I love and enjoy reading Omar Tyree books they you a better understanding of the character because Tyree writes it so will. I recommend this book because being a single mother isn't easy.
Rating: Summary: An Inspiring Read for All Parents! Review: (originally posted December 30, 1998)Regardless of your marital status, you will enjoy Single Mom. It is an inspirational tool for parents of all ages. Single Mom encourages single parents (Moms and Dads, especially) to empower themselves and their children. Single men can also benefit from the advice to become positive role models for children in single parent homes, "Be a father to a child." The title is somewhat deceiving... the book is primarily written from the fathers' perspective. Although their views of parenting are initially narrow, they learn from this amazing Single Mom, Denise Stewart. Denise is amazing as a strong Black woman who 1) loves the Lord; 2) is devoted to her family (teenage sons, Mom, trifling sister, and neice); 2) shares with her best friend and her children; 3) inspires young Single Moms in the community of all ethnic groups; and 4) desires to love and be loved by a strong Black man. Although many mothers in Denise's situation would have given up or neglected their families while climbing out of the rut, she maintains her focus. Her friends, family, and eventually the fathers' of her sons respect and admire Denise for her determination and responsibility as a parent. This strong Single Mom does not give up on men... she remains selective (NOT DESPERATE) in choosing a potential mate and positive role model for her sons. I admire Omar Tyree for his sensitivity to the issues and concerns of families (especially African-American families). WARNING: Eventhough this novel is categorized as fiction, it is FACTion... real life situations and characters with fictional names. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
Rating: Summary: SIngle Mom Review Review: Title: Single Mom Author: Omar Tyree This book is about a woman named Denise Stewart. She is a single mother from Chicago. She is now raising to sons; their names are Jimmie Stewart and Walter Perry Jr. They are ages 12 and 15. Their fathers decided to come back into their lives, one because of the million-man march and the other because they have basketball in common. Besides this Denise also has to deal with a man that wants to marry her, and she doesn't think that she is ready for the commitment. I thought this book was very interesting, it is another stimulating novel by Omar Tyree. I think a lot of single mothers could relate to the characters in the book. I know I could relate to the single parent home environment being from one myself. So, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy a good read about single mothers in today's society.

Rating: Summary: The single mother blues Review: Being a single mother myself I can understand the challenges. I myself have to juggle between my two children, a full time job and being in college full time. But this book is definitely missing something. Sure there are struggles with single mothers from the ghetto. But what exactly are the struggles? This book only gave sparse details. Nothing was told of what happened to Denise and her son when she was left at JD's mother's house after he was sent to prison. Was she put on the streets or did she just move in with her friend and her two kids? This book has too many holes that should have been filled. I mean as long as it was you would think that a little more information would have been included. This is the first book that I've actually read by Tyree but it seems like he tries to go in the minds of women and think like them. There was a good part of the book though. When all the men involved tell the story from their perspectives. But it still does not give enough info. Single mothers have to go through a lot more than what Denise had to. Being a single mother myself I know this. I have been through a lot more and I'm still striving, and I'm not even from the ghetto! There was just not enough spice to this book. It needs a tad bit more flavor. Or maybe Tyree should have actually interviewed a single mother and based the book on a true story or actual facts.
Rating: Summary: 2 Thumbs Up! Review: This was a good book, it kept me reading and reading. This is the 3rd book I read by Omar Tyree, and I really have enjoyed all three of them: Flyy Girl, For The Love of Money, and Single Mom. Now I am about to read A Do Right Man.
Rating: Summary: Single Mom Review: The novel Single Mom by Omar Tyree is a rather interesting book. I feel easily enticed into the lives of the characters in the story. I also feel as though I can relate to the situation of the main character, Denise. I believe this because a single mother rears me. I am glad that Omar Tyree decided to write a story based on the hardships of a single mother. Another thing that I admire about this book is the way the author describes the personalities and lifestyles of his characters throughout the entire book. Usually the author describes his characters at the beginning of the story only. In this novel, if you were to only read a segment you would not be capable of fully understanding the characters and their motivations. Though I have not yet completed all of Single Mom by Omar Tyree, I still feel that is an interesting book to read. I am enjoying it and I think that others will as well. In my opinion, I recommend that you go out and get it because it is very good.
Rating: Summary: PROVOCATIVE Review: This was the first book I read by Omar, and I found it to be exciting, inspirational, and very surreal. This book is so very personal and the story line is so concrete. It's a process in which an African American woman rises far an above in order to succeed as a woman, mother, student, mentor, lover, and a friend while raising two sons, and dealing with two different men with their own issues as well as not fully involving themselves in their son's lives.
Rating: Summary: Single Mom Waste of time!! Review: I usually can finish a book in a week but it has taken me 3 months to get through this one. Its is soooo boring. Nothing ever happens in this book. When I read the title I thought that there would be a few struggles like the ones I have dealt with being a single mom. Her life is perfect: Good job, good money, good boyfriend and good baby daddys. No turning point & no baby momma drama at all in this book whatsoever!! Nothing ever happend. Ever time I turned the page I got more and more aggravated. I can't believe this book was ever put out there for us to purchase. I don't enjoy bashing people but how the heck was this book published??? I don't get it......Boring Boring Boring
Rating: Summary: Single Mom Review: I think that this book was very good because it really showed all the problems and conflicts that a single black woman with 2 boys has to go through. Omar Tyree is really showing how he knows what people in this society go through everyday. In this book a single mom named Denise is raising two boys with two different fathers and she is also dating someone else. She ended up getting married to the new man she is dating and her sons are doing good now after all the problems that they have went through.
