Rating: Summary: Fantastic First Book Review: Resurrecting Mingus is the best novel I've read in quite some time. The author's ability to navigate sensitive topics with contemporary attitude combined with the fresh writing style really set this work apart. I applaud Mingus' decision regarding her lovelife and hope she is bold enough to make a similar decision regarding Eva. I look forward to reading subsequent works from this author.
Rating: Summary: Without a doubt .... A MR!!! Review: Resurrecting Mingus is without a doubt one of the best reads this year !! This is a novel that I would put on the MR list ! When a book touches my emotions I can not help but give it 5* !!! When the story end Mingus, Eric , and I had shed tears. I was literally speechless for fear of the tears failing . I was hurting for Mingus . Those few moments of pleasure cost Eric now a life of pain. Was it worth it ? You need to read to find out what happened! I truly believed Eric loved Mingus but....... he messed up ! She could not take him back !
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Debut Novel! Review: Resurrecting Mingus was a book that I wasn't really sure if I wanted to read or not. I've read interracial books before and I was thinking this would be a rehash. In any case, I figured that I'd give it a try anyway and I'm extremely glad I did since I was hooked from the first page! I loved the story and I love the writing. Mingus had a lot of issues to deal with, but so did her mother, her father, and her sister. To have parts of the story told by the different characters was refreshing since it allowed the reader to better understand each one of them. One didn't have to have grown up in an interracial family to understand some of the pain that Mingus went through trying to "fit in". This is an excellent book by first time novelist Jenoyne Adams which is also one of my favorites of 2001.
Rating: Summary: A moving story . . . Review: Resurrecting Mingus was an excellent book. Author Jenoyne Adams crafted a wonderful novel about Mingus Browning, a successful lawyer who struggles to keep herself from falling into a bottomless pit of depression as she attempts to deal with being jilted by her boyfriend, the recent news of her father's infidelity, and her witch of a sister, Eva. On top of all that, Mingus struggles with the issue of her identity, along with her strained relationship with her black father, and white mother. This book flowed with a poetic cadence that moved you from beginning to end. Jenoyne Adams, you did your thing! Keep the pen flowing, my sista!
Rating: Summary: VERY INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTIN Review: Shortly after I purchased this book, I wanted to go back to the store and exchange it for another book. I don't know why, I thought it was just something to read. It turned out to be a very interesting story. From the moment I started reading,I could not put the book down. I really enjoyed this book. but,the ending was kind of funny. I wonder if there's going to be a sequel. I think the best way for Mingus to get back at her sister, is to marry Eric. I don't think Eric was such a bad guy after all. The author did a wonderful job on this debut novel. I look forward to the next book.
Rating: Summary: Extra-Ordinary...wonderful....read Review: Taken from Jenoyne Adams debut novel "Resurrecting Mingus", set-up Eva talking to her sister Mingus....about her mother and father's life and how their decisions effect her life. Its my birthright. M'Dea messed up Carl's life by getting pregnant. Carl messed up M'Dea's life by marrying her. And I was the catalyst in all of it. That's the energy I was born into, wouldn't it make sense that my life would turn out the same way? If you can feel the negative emotion behind those words you have just gotten a glimpse of Eva Browning one of the characters in Resurrecting Mingus. Jenoyne Adams challenges issues that we are all familiar with if not in our own family then the family of a friends. Deception, hatred, jealousy, sibling rivalry and entrapment are all part of the Browning family. All Mingus wants to do is try to sew the loose threads that has unraveled within her family and have someone love her, b/c she has no clue how to love herself. Mingus finally does find someone to love her more then she loves herself...until...Eva's green-eyed monster slaps Mingus into reality. This is a wonderfully written book with issues you would not expect to be presented. Jenoyne Adams dared us all by putting them in black n white. She has done a magnificent job of relaying the pain, and joy that self-discovering offers.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: The best way to describe Resurrecting Mingus is "wow"! Not only was the book powerfully and beautifully written, but it also left me deeply touched. As a white woman in an interracial relationship, and as the mother of a biracial daughter, I could definitely relate to the story line! I related to it on a deeper level too, because I also was cheated on by a black man who subsequently had a child by the black woman he was cheating with. Reading about M'Dea's pain and feelings of rejection (because the woman her husband left her for was black) made me relive all of the pain I went through. At the time it happened, I felt all the same things M'Dea did. I truly understood how her character felt. My only complaint about the book is that it ended so unhappily - I felt that it was making the statement that sucessful interracial relationships are impossible (or at least unlikely). Despite this, I would love to read more writing by Adams. Hopefully, she will write a sequel to Resurrecting Mingus - the ending of the novel left me wanting more!
Rating: Summary: This book [made me mad]... Review: the first time I read it. The ending [made me mad] as it seemed against my instincts, Mingus pissed me off with her weak actions throughout the book... I was generally made angry at one point or another by everything in this book. ..and then I read it again. I laughed out loud unexpectedly. Eyes glistened wet while moving through a particular difficult chapter. I realized I was not angry with the book. I was angry at the characters. The characters in this book are human, painfully so. Were they my friends, I'd have to sit them down and give them a good talking to. They make decisions and do things that sometimes don't seem logical to me-- because they are human, and prone to error, and generally illogical. The characters were so well-developed I started taking up arms with the _individuals_ in Resurrecting Mingus, wanting to help them with their lives. If that's not a success in the writing style, I don't know what is. This book is about human flaws, and struggling to do right by yourself. It is about a woman who realizes all her material successes don't substitute for self-love. That the love of a man does not replace being comfortable with the person you are when you are alone. It is, above all, about becoming yourself. I think every character by the book's end commits to being more honest with themselves-- and that is one of life's most important lessons. This book has become a favorite, and I'm looking forward to more of Jenoyne's character explorations.
Rating: Summary: A TRULY MAGNIFICENT BOOK Review: The only thing i can say is BUY THIS BOOK!!! It's an incredibly well written story. Jenoyne Adams you are truly a gifted and talented writer... Much success with all of your future endeavors
