Rating: Summary: A performer's life; true to life and not what you think..... Review: well....i picked up the book due to its lively cover. i was initially intrigued by reading the front and back jacket. i was also excited because the author is a comedienne. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK EXPECTING TO LAUGH ALL THE WAY THROUGH. it is touching, sad, true to life, humorous at times.i laughed out loud twice, cried twice, and was somewhat amused and entertained throughout most of the text. the book starts out pretty heavy, with the main character losing her mother. she then continues on her journey to "find herself". it takes you through all the trials and tribulations of "hollywood life" from new york to california to florida and back to new york again. mindy's relationships went from shallow to meaningful, the one constant being her best friend ursula (until the end). her father was also there for her, throughout. this was touching. this was a journey from start to finish (full circle) of a young woman's life, bringing you through every audition, through each show, through ups and downs (it seemed mostly downs) and then finally to where it all made sense to her. it was okay. i guess i expected to have a good laugh all the way through and was disenchanted. i am not going to seek out other books whose authors are comedians. i have tried a few times and have been disappointed. a lot of it has to do with the delivery of the material, and so i expected too much on paper.
Rating: Summary: Hurray! Review: What's not to like? Rita Rudner is funny and generous and warm, altogether engaging. I caught her act in Las Vegas last year and she is freakin' adorable. (And hot. That's right, I said it so there.) AND a snazzy dresser. Rita delivers her signature zingers in spades, and the reader gets a good overview of what it must be like to come up through the ranks in the comedy circuit. But you know what makes this book so good, so appealing? It's the voices Rita gives her characters. Each one is distinct and resonant, so gravid with character is seems to carry the entire life of the speaker in it. A writer must be very tuned into people to do that, which explains why Rita is able to make her comedy relevant and liberating to the audience, and why the audience seems to like her at once. Rita, if you ever read this, please note that three stars is a lot for me; four stars means a book changed my life and five stars means the book changes my life and the author comes over to paint my house. Mozel Tov girly-girl, the book is sweet and low-down.
