Summary: GREAT READ
Review: I'm a big fan of Lolita Files, but looking at the description of this book I thought about not reading it for a while. Fortunately, it was my book club selection for the month because I absolutely love this book.

It's well written, beautifully paced, grabs your attention and never lets you go. It's a very difficult story to tell and in the hands of a less talented author it could be too very dark and disturbing to enjoy. Some of the characters are so sinister it is amazing that Ms. Files is able to breath life into them and force you to actually care what becomes of them. We know the characters so well we are forced to understand how very bad things can happen to good people. She's tackling though subjects here Incest, Voodoo, Obsession, Betrayal, Sexuality but somehow we always know there is light at the end of the tunnel and hope for future generations.

Summary: Vivid, amazing writing! Bravo!
Review: Child of God by Lolita Files is by far one of the best reads I've indulged in during the past two years. Instead of studying for exams, I read this novel from cover to cover in one breathtaking sitting and was treated to a delicious gumbo of life with the ill-fated Botens. Ms. Files has truly perfected her craft and honed her skills and has created a spellbinding tale with vivid, three-dimentional characters that will stay with you long after you close the cover on this lyrically-woven family saga. I loved each of her novels, and Child of God simply shows the depth, span, scope, and range of her abilities. Look forward to seeing more of her work, whether it be literary or contemporary. She does justice to both tenants of writing. Keep it up, gurl! Peace and balance, Tracy Price-Thompson, author BLACK COFFEE.

Summary: excellent. 10 thumbs up
Review: In this epic family saga, Lolita Files unveils the hidden lives of three generations of the Boten family. She introduces us to Grandma Amalie, a mother so fiercely protective, she will quietly sacrifice everything for her son. There's Grace, who conceals the identity of her child's father for more than twenty years. There's Aunt Sukie, whose strange power over her husband, Walter, is matched only by the strength of her dark magic. And then there's Lay, the bad seed, whose secret betrayals will cost his family dearly.

The family's past begins rising to the surface when a mysterious fire takes the life of young Ophelia Boten's infant son. The tragedy sets the family in motion, its members on a quest for self-discovery that will lead them to the drug world of inner-city Detroit, a midwestern college campus, the jungles of Vietnam, and back again. Ophelia sets her own course, one that will ultimately bring her into the arms of a caring and benevolent lover. But before she can embrace her new life and begin a family of her own, she must fully understand and accept the Boten clan's tormented legacy.
this is the first book i read by lolita files. it was very good. i read this book in 2 das. this book is about 3 generations of the boten family who is corrupt and does things that "normal families" wouldn't do. Its is truly a page turner and you will enjoy. i dont want to tell you about the book because i encourage you to go out to buy the book.i give this book 10 stars instead of 5 and i give it a A+

Summary: "God Bless the Child Who's Got is Own..."
Review: I have often been told, "...ain't no mess like a family mess", but Ms. Files takes that statement not to a different level, but to an entirely different universe. This is my first time reading from this author, and I already can't wait to see what else she has out there. The way she manipulated time to deliver this family history was very well done, and how she made the ridiculously deviant seem alarmingly human, shows her true talent. A few parts of the plot were a little over the top, but her writing talent and character development more than made up for those minor flaws. This one is a must read...its fun, meaningful, and shows how love puts folks through so much.

Summary: Look...Lolita did her thing with this book.
Review: I haven't shed a tear reading a book, since reading a J Californa Cooper book. So when I found myself about to cry, I stopped reading and called my girl in Chicago and told her what I am telling you...girl you better read Lolita Files new book. It had everything in it from greed, lust, incest, drug dealers, pimps, murder and so on and so forth. I haven't read a really good book since "The Haunting of Hip Hop" (will reivew later)so I was overdo a good read. "Blind Ambitions" was a book we had going around the office and this is going to be the next one. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Peace

Summary: Story-telling at it's Finest
Review: This was an excellent story. The pace wasn't as fast as the usual Files style, but it didn't have to be. Each character was a savory dish full of emotion and depth.

Summary: What a story!
Review: I'd have to say that out of all the books I've read in 2001, only two fall into the category of stories that were so unusual they were unlike anything I've ever read. The first book that fits into that category is The Absence of Nectar, and the other is Child of God.

To me this was a book in which the writer didn't follow prescribed rules of how characters should be portrayed. It seems (and I could be wrong) that she just went for it, let herself feel everything the characters felt, and allowed herself to tell this story no matter how strange it was, or how wretched the characters' behaviour.

It is very difficult to give a synopsis of this story but I will say it is an examination of a family's history and the tragedies they endured, the pitfalls of generational curses, the horrors of voodoo, and other such unusual elements.

If you enjoy a story that includes atrocity after atrocity, with unforgettable and at times, EVIL characters, you may want to read Child of God. While I wouldn't call it literary fiction, I think a better term is comm-lit (commercial literary) because it combines the two elements and does so successfully.

Summary: A little Shakespeare, a lot of drama
Review: This engrossing tale is full of so many ingredients of a Shakespeare play, say Hamlet which this book is lightly based on. The elements includes, incest, suicide, voodoo, and homosexuality.
In Downtown, Tennessee, the Boten clan is known as that crazy family. Walter and Grace are brother and sister but the bonds go deeper. Later on Grace has three children and she sees them repeating the same pattern of her lifestyle. Ophelia, her daughter withdraws after her baby, Hamlet is killed in a fire. Death by fire is another reoccurring theme.
When Ophelia moves to Michigan and goes to college she is exposed to whole new experience and the possibilities of what she is able to accomplish. But she cannot forget her brother Laertes (Lay) who lives in Detroit and has cut his self off from her but still under the influence of their evil Aunt Sukie who practices voodoo.
Polo, the other brother goes to Detroit and enters his brother's trade but soon finds out that is not the lifestyle for him though it is too late for his girlfriend, Coolie who gets caught up in the fast life.
The secrets that have been passed down from generation to generation is the cause of much pain and anguish and when Walter decides to make a change, the climax is explosive.
I applaud this author for tackling some controversial subjects and weaving a tale that satisfies both the literary and contemporary/commercial tastes of her fans.
