Rating: Summary: HARD TO PUT DOWN!!! Review: This was my first Lolita Files book and I finished it in one day. The opening line of the book was "There is nothing like the smell of a burning baby." The book begins with the fire that killed Ophelia's baby. First we are introduced to Amalie, whose abusive husband leads her to kill him, Grace(ophelia's mother), an innocent pecan-tan colored girl with long hair and the object of her mother Amalie's hatred, Lay, the only thing that Amalie loves and the most cruel person in the story, Aunt Sukie, the mysterious creole woman capable of Black Magic, Walter, Aunt Sukie's husband and Ophelia's father(grace is Walter's sister), and Big Daddy, the big kind man that knows nothing of the family's horrid past. This story reveals a family deeply rooted in sin and deceit, and the surprising twist at the end will have you falling off the edge of your seat!!! Please buy this book becuase you will NOT be disappointed!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Put It Down Review: This book is wonderful. At first, I thought I was going to have trouble keeping up with the characters and plots, but it all wove together into a very interesting tale. The book was both disturbing and satisfying. I have never written a review before, but felt so strongly about this book that I felt compelled to write this. I have never read Hamlet, but would consider it now after reading this novel to see the similarites in the characters.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: This book is a great read. Words cannot do justice to describe Child of God. Lolita Files just keeps getting better and better. You go Girl.
Rating: Summary: not bad indeed Review: I just finshed reading this book after purchasing it less than 48 hours ago. I just couldn't put it down. This book was in deed like a talk show involving one family in a twist of weird happenings and secrets that many would indeed keep to themselves. This is the first book i have ever read by Lolita files and i have to say once again "not bad indeed."
Rating: Summary: One of My New Favorite Authors Review: I have read previous books by Ms. Files, but "Child of God" is my favorite. "Child of God" is the story of the trials and tribulations of the Boten Family. If your looking for a book about family drama, you have picked the right one. There's incest, voodoo, drug abuse, prostitution, and all of this is in just one family.Ms. Files did an excellent job telling the Boten's story. She tackled the dark topic of incest without making it sound explotive. Even though my family is no where near as messed up as the family in the book, I could relate to the characters. And I really enjoyed the ending. I read Files' "Scenes From A Sistah" and "Getting to the Good Part" before I read her lastest and you can really see Files' growth as a writer. I can't wait to read her next book. I strongly recommend this book to all serious book lovers.
Rating: Summary: Oh My God! Review: It was a fast read because you couldn't put it down want to know what was next. I will tell you this much you must read this book. Then you would never want to live Downtown. I was really surprise by the ending who was telling the story. I can't tell you much more it will give away the enjoyment of reading. I'm a fan of Lolita Files sistah I think you out did it this time. I have read all of her books they are great. But this one make you say Oh God.
Rating: Summary: No Stone Left Unturned Review: This book seems like it has "too much plot", but it is all tied togeter, and woven nicely. I didn't care too much for the recurring incest/rape plot, but I couldn't put the book down. From the first few sentences, I was hooked. I love character development in a book, and I think everyone, especially Ophelia, was fleshed out beautifully. The book is certainly not for those looking for a humor, or a happy ending, but I'd recommed this book if you like intrege, drama, suspence, and a story that spans the over several decades.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely breathtaking! I wish I could give it more! Review: I've read all of Ms. Files' works and have always considered her to be a strong and talented writer. However, with Child of God she has moved into an entirely different league. Reminiscent of Toni Morrison's Sula, Child of God is a major literary achievement. Anyone who has placed Lolita Files in the "bubblegum Black fiction writer" category will be forced to reconsider once they read her latest work. Kudos to you, Ms. Files. I have a new book to add to my list of all-time favorites!
Rating: Summary: Lolita Files' best one yet! Review: I love the description of the characters and how they were all woven together throughout the story. This book definitely shows Files growth as an author - although I loved her past 3 works, this way is by far one of my favorites.
Rating: Summary: Talkin' bout a GOOD book! Review: This was my first time reading something by Lolita Files and I must say I was very impressed with this story that was told back in the day. I was hooked from the first page. So many things happen in this novel that my mouth stayed in the shape of an O! Child Of God had me talking out loud and even shedding a few tears at times. This book is a true page turner! I HIGHLY recommend book lovers to get this book TODAY! (PLEASE!) Child Of God is about lies, deceit, incest, betrayal, love, loyalty and SECRETS all in one. Watch out for the secrets in this book because they will blow you away! Lolita Files you get two thumbs up girl! You did an excellent job!!!!!
