Rating: Summary: A Must Read For Every Black Man and Woman Review: Lolita turned it. As Mama would say, "She put her foot in it. Threw it on the floor and just stomped all up in it." I was a fan prior to reading this book, but sista girl stepped up and hit it out the park. This book touches upon so much in the Black family and who we are that I highly recommend that this book be read by every Black man and woman and a huge discussion should be had afterwards. The characters are flawed, but real. These are family members, and even if your family life is not as dysfunctional as the Boten clan, you can relate to what they are going through. Through pain and tragedy to secrets being exposed and revelations being realized they put you through the motions. I love how each section is broken up and how the quotes apply directly to that story. As in the case with Eric Jerome Dickey and his book, Thieves' Paradise, she has graduated to another level in her writing, and I look forward to her next novel. Plant me down...
Rating: Summary: BRAVO...SIMPLY SAID, IT'S ONE OF THE BEST Review: THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ. I UNDERSTAND THE SUBJECT MATTER IS NOT FOR EVERY ONE, BUT THIS BOOK WAS INTRIGING AND WELL WRITTEN. THIS BOOK IS A GUARANTEED PAGE TURNER. I LOVED IT AND I KNOW YOU WILL TOO.
Rating: Summary: Great Editing! Poor Proofreading Review: I could not believe this book was written by Lolita Files after reading her other novel which was written no where near this level! The writing in this book was awesome! It's obvious that she has an excellent editor! Whomever the editor is---hats off to you! On the other hand, however, there were many typographical errors. But gripping and compelling, to say the least. However, I'm still not sure who is the actual main character of this book. I love the voice of Lay---very realistic for that time (and this). I could see Ice Cube playing this role. The story of incest was graphic and regurgitating. It wasn't like they didn't know that they were related is what makes it puke-sickening. This story was overwhelmed or overboard with incest, murders and house fires. It seems like the author has taken several previously written books/movies and created this story. In this novel, you will hear voices from "The Color Purple," scenes from "Boys N The Hood," and characters from "Beloved." I found it unusual for a father AND his two sons to all have been homosexuals. Homosexuality is not hereditary as the author may suggest. It is a chosen lifestyle. None of the characters seemed to have found redemption in their lives and since the story is being told by a fourth/fifth generation voice whose own life has yet to be told, this leads me to believe that a sequel is soon to follow. I give it a 3.5 stars for the overall storyline, but a 5 star rating for the editing. Ms. Flies you should stick with this editor---she'll take you places.
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: I recall my high school days of reading Hamlet when I read this book. It was carefully and concisely pened. The action was gripping but not too fast paced. Files makes the reader feel as if they are actually a member of the family or even a close family friend. This book is filled with tragedy, love unfufilled, and heartache. Tears ran down my face when I finally closed the back cover. Great job Lolita Files.
Rating: Summary: Lolita Flies commands your attention! Review: In this descriptive page turner, Lolita Flies captures the internal strife of incestuous secrets mixed with deadly outcomes. Page after vivid page, I found myself in awe of her ability to create depictive scenes given the horrific subject matter. Highlights include a poignant relationship between Ophelia and her love interest. Despite the turmoil in the book, if you can stomach the subject matter, this is a must read! Hats off to you Lolita Flies.
Rating: Summary: Very dark Review: When reading this book - I could feel the gloomy setting. I found this book to be a pageturner - but still kind of depressing.
Rating: Summary: Sisters & Brothers Review: This was a good read I have read Ms. Flies other books and this one was totally different. It was some nasty stuff going on in this book but overall I could not put it down without wondering what is going to happen next.
Rating: Summary: Now This is a Novel Review: Lolite Files really out did herself with this one. This story had everything that you could thing of and more. Incest, voodoo, murder and drugs. Ms. Files bring the characters to life and when reading you feel like you really know the Boten family.
Rating: Summary: Not bad.... Review: After reading the first novel from this author, I was very shocked by the talent displayed in this novel. It was so beautifully written, I kept looking at the cover to make sure it was the same author! I was enthralled by the story, however, I felt there was some serious overkill in the endings of each story line and would have liked to have seen more thought go into the conclusions of each. I also found it disturbing that the author seemed to insinuate that there was some type of genetic disposition towards incest and homosexuality. Because each generation had no real inkling of the sins of the past generations that was the only conclusion I could draw. I think it would have been easier to swallow if there was a culture of incest within the family that was known, but not discusses...just a thought. Overall, a very good read.
Rating: Summary: The Best Adult Novel I Have Ever Read!!... Review: I LOVE this book. It's really suspenseful and sad at the same time. Lolita Files has a really talented mind for writing. The ending was good and the characters were unforgettable. My favorite characters were Grace and Coolie. They both had lives filled with tragedy. Regardless, I love this book and I'm going to read it again sometime soon.
