Summary: Off the Hook!!!
Review: Lolita Files' latest novel about a Tennesse family plagued with the legacy of incest, murder and secrecy is by far her best. From the very first line I was hooked and could not put the book down until I turned the last page. The manner in which Files weaves in the backstories was masterful. In "Child of God" Files creates drama and suspense that will leave you craving for more.

Summary: Her best work yet
Review: The first line of the novel introduces the audacity of this spirited story of a rural family plagued with menacing deep family secrets and arduous dilemmas that leave an ominous cloud hanging over them. The Boltens teeter between aerious innocence and ignorant wickedness. Files unfolds their history of murder, incest, and deceit, expertly moving from past to present. Evil and sin run rampant through the pages interspersed through each character and successfully shaping the story.

Child of God is Files' best work yet. The blatant parallels of the novel to Shakespeare's Hamlet are ingenious. Files assembled a fleet of characters that are colorful, spirited, and unique. The characters are developed and delivered in their own entity where they project themselves into the unfolding of this lurid story.

This tragic story is full of capricious plots that will leave your mouth agape in disbelief, but will continuously grab your interest. This novel is very different from Files' previous novels; however, it shows acute intelligence and versatility in her writing. You will enjoy this story.

Summary: Incest, Betrayal, and Murder - Alot is happening Downtown
Review: Lord, Lord, Lord. I read this book in one day. I was drawn to all of the characters. Ms. Files depicted their lives in great detail. You learn of incest between brother and sister for two generations. You learn of people living lies and desperately hiding from the truth. You learn of the murderous rage of a brother, a mother, and a husband. But most of all you learn that everyone in this book just wants to be loved.

I warn you, you must be prepared to deal with graphic details of murder and ... I don't know if I will be able to wait for Ms. Files' next book. You go girl!!!

Summary: Nothing Outstanding
Review: There isn't anything outstandingly wrong with "Child of God", it just wasn't outstanding.

In the beginning of the novel, the author throws so many characters into the storyline that by the time you get to the meat of the story, the reader's got the characters all confused. By the middle/end of the book, I wasn't emotionally invested in any of the characters; which is a shame because the author uses every dramatic tactic in attempt to pull the reader in.

The story isn't told in chronological order. The multi-generational storytelling and over-dramatics makes this a draining read.

This story is a lazy mix of "Flowers in the Attic" and "Scarface".

I wouldn't prevent anyone from reading this book, I just wouldn't recommend it. What the writer's trying to do has been done already. In fact, it was perfected in J. California Cooper's "The Wake of the Wind".

Summary: Thought-provoking read!
Review: I read this book with my book club and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is one of those books that makes you think while you are reading it (a rarity these days). You have to remember how everyone is connected (and everyone in the story is) in order to get it. The writing was superb and did not fall into a predictable pattern. Although everything does not work out to a happy ending, it all resolves itself well. This book really shows how our family demons haunt our lives until they are confronted head-on. Pick it up if you are want an intellectual challenge.

Summary: A Definite Must Read!!!
Review: I bought this book from Half price books about a year ago. It sat on my shelf until this week. I finally picked it up and from the moment I started, I was immediately sucked into the Boten family drama. This book covers incest, murder, drug use, prostitution and most of all betrayal. I praise Ms. Files for writing such an excellent book! Words cannot express how much I recommend this book to others.

Summary: Deserve more than 5 stars
Review: This book was amazing. I read this book and I like to read urban ficiton, but this book was really good. I called it "old skool" it has so much drama in this book it ridiculus!

Summary: You Could Call This Book Everything But....You'd Be Wrong
Review: If you'll check the review date, you'll see that this has been one of the best books I've read in a while. It was also one of the most disturbing books I've read in a long time. Lolita Files has gone into a different direction here with "Child of God" and I liked where she took me. The writing was exquisite, the characters were incredible, and the story was gut wrenching. With each page, I was more horrified than the last it seemed. The motifs and symbolism woven into the book were perfect. I read this book voraciously and still wanted more when I finished. Forget the comparisons to Shakespeare. Ladies and Gentlemen, Ms. Lolita Files; DAMN GOOD WRITER!

Summary: You Want Drama???
Review: I was seeking a book full of drama with a capital D for my girlfriend who loves books like that. Well, after reading some reviews, I decided to pick this book up, and I don't think that she could have asked for anymore! The drama, sadness, loss, depression, self-discovery, unspeakable secrets and occasional friendships, courtships and joys weave together to create a story that you can't wait to finish. I couldn't believe what I was reading sometimes! I would actually gasp outloud. This story is definitely TABOO on various levels, and I think all in all, it served it's purpose and actually had a point and meaning behind it all. Maybe we ALL are children of God, regardless of how we got here and some of the choices we have made in our lives....well, all of us except for Sukie!

Summary: Who Was the Child of God?
Review: I got this one from the public library and so glad I did. I didn't understand which character (and there was so very many) was the "child of God." All of them seemed to be filled with demons. This is why I couldn't tell which one was the child of God. It was an okay read but I wouldn't put it at the top of my list.
