Rating: Summary: Change is Good!! Review: This book is a style change for Lolita and a good change it is! I am a big fan of Lolita's work and must say I was a little relunctant to read this one. Something about the cover of the book did not appeal to me. However, being the loyal fan that I am I started to read it and boy was I surprised! The characters in the book were well developed and their lives expressed so vividly that you could picture their faces, where and how they lived. This book really took me with the characters. This book has further cemented my love for Lolita's work. Keep up the good work, girl! Looking very forward to the next one.
Rating: Summary: Hooked for life Review: This was my very first time reading a novel by Lolita Files. I am hooked for life. The story of Ophelia and her family was very well developed. This was a story of love, lies, incest, betrayal but most of all PASSION. A mothers passionate love for her son. A fathers unwavering love for his daughter. A mother and fathers love for each other. Every character was life-size. Every scene was vivid. Lolita Files did the unimaginable...she was able to bring together Shakespearean themes and the Voodoo religion subtly but with substance. I recommend this book to everyone, especially my Circle of Friends Book Club sisters.
Rating: Summary: One of the BEST!!! Review: This was a very very good book. I was kind of relunctant to read it because I wasn't a big fan of Ms. Files' other novels. But once I started reading, I could not put it down. It was so unlike anything I have ever read. The characters were so real, I could feel their pain especially Polo and Coolie. She didnt have a chance to tell the man that she truly loved good-bye. Now this was one screwed up family to say the least, but I was glad that at least one person found true happiness. I would recommend this book to every reader that loves a good heart-warming story. Big Ups to Ms. Files!
Rating: Summary: OH MY! Review: This book had everything in it that you can think of and more. It had romance, family, incest, murder, mystery and spiritual beliefs. This was a very well written novel and my hat goes off to Ms. Files for going so far into her depths to write such an engrossing novel. I had no idea what to expect, but I must say that it took me a minute to really think of how to review this book. I could not put it down for one minute because it was so emotional and the characters were so real. This novel was a mixture of Beloved, Eve's Bayou, New Jack City and the Soprano's all mixed in one. Ms. Files, I believe you have put yourself into a new category and you are well on your way.I loved Ophelia and Walter in this novel and I was very happy that innocent and free loving were given life to live and that there was a happy ending. Every character in this novel got what they deserved and then some. This book was definitely a 10 star, not just a 5!
Rating: Summary: This is no Missy and Reesy story Review: But this book was oh so very good. Lolita Files outdid herself with this book. The reader is able to follow the Boten family saga from Downtown, Tennessee to Lansing and Detroit, Michigan. This book held my attention so, that I could not complete my days work as I had to keep reading and find out what happens next. The Boten family loves one another, incestiously (is that a word) and unconditionally. The stories of Grace, Walter& Sukie, Ophelia, Polo & Coolie, and Lay, will keep you turning the pages. There is voodoo, drug abuse, prostitution, homosexuality, and anything else you may want in this book. I have to mention Fire cause fire seems to be a essential part of the story. One thing for sure with this novel. There will be no sequel cause when their story line is finished they are finished. Pick up this one you will enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: An unforgettable tragedy Review: Child of God is a heart breaking tragedy that you will never forget. I cried throughout the book and was shocked by the various page-turning twists. The story flowed like a river, so I was able to read it in one day.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Read!!!!! Review: When I first started Child Of God I said to myself "I don't like this book" Why, did I say that...This book was excellent. Child Of God opens up Downtown TN.just like everywhere else in Child Of GOd everybody knows everybody's business. Most of the gossiping is about the Boten clan. In this Epic Family Saga, Files unveils the hidden lives of three generations of the Boten family. The family's past being rising to the surface when a mysterious fire takes the life of Of Ophelia's Infant son. the tragedy sets the family in motion all the members are are on a quest for self-discovery that will lead them to find out secrets of the family. Child Of God is just one of these books that you have to read from start to finish it is excellent. I would definitely recommend this book to others. I will be waiting for the next book. Blessings goes out to Ms.Files.
Rating: Summary: A Page Turner From Beginning To End!! Review: My nose was glued to the pages—simply stated I was fixated with Child of God from the first sentence in the novel through the end wondering how the whole drama was going to play out in Downtown, TN, Detroit and Lansing, MI. This novel has it all: voodoo/mysticism, murder, incest, family secrets, misguided emotion all wrapped up within primarily three generations of the Boten family. Files does an excellent job moving back and forth through time and giving each character their own history (even though a bit sordid at times). Almost everyone in the Boten family struggles with one emotion “love” – how to show it, what it means, what they’ll do to receive it, the effects of misguided love, etc. They are on a road of self-discovery where the truth is slowly revealed and ends with a semblance of resolution. The critic's reviews give a solid overview of the novel, so I won’t repeat it here. I must warn that this book is not for everyone…but I also think it’s a great work of fiction and I’m looking forward to Ms. File’s next novel.
Rating: Summary: Go 'Lita, Go 'Lita! Review: "Child of God" is by far Lolita Files best work of fiction to date. Spanning generations of the Boten family's trials and tribulations, their stories will snatch you up by the collar, pull you into the story , and plop you down on the sidelines as the action unfolds. "Child of God" focuses on family love both pure (in the case of Ophelia and Polo) and unpure (Ophelia and Lay are just one incestuous combination), as well as drugs, voodoo, murder and suicide. This is no "and they all lived happily ever after" story. Characters die in a multitude of graphic, violent ways - this book is not for the squemish - but the death toll never feels overdone and the plot twists feel authentic, not just done for the sake of theatrics. After reading this book, it's safe to say that Lolita Files was just playing with us with her three previous novels. "Child of God" shows her true talent for spinning a tale, and quite a spinner she is.
Rating: Summary: Lolita Proves that Change Is Good Review: Let me start off by saying that this book was fantastic! CHILD of GOD is so different from Lolita's other books and I loved it! Talk about issues-the Boten family has plenty of issues and readers will be enthralled with their story. A true page turner.
