Summary: An All-Time Favorite
Review: Alas, this is out of print and it had a fairly disastrous movie adaptation, but it's one of my favorites for a good laugh. Sarah Bird is by far my favorite author, though her books are hard to find nowadays. The Boyfriend School is really the perfect romance novel, both following and flaunting the genre. A reporter goes to cover a romance writers' conference and discovers a lot more than how "the wine country's been done to death."

Summary: Loved the humor, loved the plot, HATED the heroine
Review: Although this book was consistently laugh-out-loud funny, and the plot was smart, quirky, original, I hated the heroine almost from the point of introduction, and never grew to like her. Why not? She's spineless about how her boss treats her, embarrassingly tolerant of a philandering 'boyfriend', and superficial in her judgment of men. Although her attitudes change somewhat by the end of the novel, I still never felt she deserved happiness, and could never believe that such a paragon as the hero could ever have fallen in love with her. As the book is written in the first person, this means I hated the narrator and thus never got 'into' the book. If only the heroine had been someone I could have liked and respected, this would have been a GREAT book.

Summary: It's like reading my own mind..
Review: Gawd...I love this book.
I think I've probably read this book more than I've read anything else in my entire life...and I'm one of those book devourers.
I've recommended this book so many times to so many people, especially guys(!), that I'm still surprised its out of print! Sarah Bird perfectly nailed the quirky charm that is Austin, and the manic glee that invades you when you are newly in love.
...and its so nice to see an Austin writer talking about Austin!

Summary: One of my favorite all-time romances
Review: I also have read this book several times and absolutely love it. I know two romance authors who say it's their favorite romance. It's non-traditional and quirky. Sarah Bird has a unique style. I haven't seen anything new from her since 1993, and I wish she'd have something new out soon.

Summary: Where are you, Sarah Bird?
Review: I am not a person who usually rereads books, but I just read THE BOYFRIEND SCHOOL for the third time in ten years, and it's one of my absolute favorites. Funny and yet touching, as well. I'm so glad that this book was recommended to me years ago. What I'd like to know is, what happened to Sarah Bird? After 1993, I can't find any record of her having written anything.

Summary: A Very Engaging Novel
Review: I am thrilled that his book is back in print!

This novel is very engaging. The humor is subtle but the characters are fully fleshed out and it's the secondary characters that really make this book sing. It was fun watching Gretchen be "educated" about romance and the genre. It is a nice spoof of the genre. There is a romance but it is not the focus. Only about the last 1/4th of the book is devoted to the romance. But don't worry. You won't miss it. I had some LOL moments from this book. It is a great book. I'm buying another copy.

Summary: Why is this book out of print?
Review: I first read this book in excerpt form in Cosmopolitan. I laughed out loud, which is something I rarely do when reading books. I searched all over and finally found the book. I have pushed this book on every female friend since. I don't know why more people don't know of Sarah Bird and her wonderfully funny novels. I check the 'b' section of the new releases at every bookstore I enter. This is my all time favorite book and I wish she'd write more.

Summary: I've got a Masters degree in English, and I ADORE this book
Review: I read this book right after it was published and bought paperback copies for all my friends. Sarah Bird is someone I would like to know personally. The humor and wisdom in The Boyfriend School make it a classic. I don't understand why more people don't know about it. I thought I could could recognize a plot twist a mile away, but Bird really surprised me. I think the theme is timeless, and I really enjoyed her clever send-up of the romance genre. The movie didn't measure up to the novel.

Summary: One of my favorite stories...still laughing!
Review: I read this book several years ago when a bookstore owner in Albuquerque NM suggested it to me. It's one of my favorite stories...I just love the characters and the humor. Shelly Long and Jamie Gertz starred in an HBO movies based on the novel, but it just doesn't measure up to the book. I'd love to read it again, but, unfortunately, I lent my copy to someone who never returned it. If you come across a copy, enjoy it!
