Rating: Summary: The Drowning Season Review: A page-turner and hard to put down. The characters in this book are both mysterious and loveable. Esther is the kind of woman you hate but are forced to like. It's definitely hard to put down once you start reading it.

Rating: Summary: Lyrical, poignant Review: Alice Hoffman creates a novel whose cast of characters shine. From a tempted husband, his panic attack phobic wife and their bewildered son, to a confused teenager and the reclusive giant who loves her, the frailty, vulnerability and humanity of these people will leave you aching. It deftly recreates the moments in our lives when we were young, scared, and longing to connect and be loved, and those awful hours when we realized the need to be strong, even if it meant sacrificing our desires.
Rating: Summary: A LITTLE GEM OF A BOOK Review: Having just discovered Alice Hoffman, I have been reading all of her books and I am amazed that I never read them before. This is a quiet little jewel of a book, I highly recommend it, along with Practical Magic and especially Seventh Heaven.
Rating: Summary: I am never disappointed in an Alice Hoffman book. Review: I always feel, when I pick up a book by Ms. Hoffman, that I am in for a treat and this book was no exception. I love the descriptive almost poetic style of writing. From the beginning, the reader is taken on a magical, mystical journey that is not easily forgotten. There are parts of this book that seemingly come from a children's fairy tale or fableyet hey seem entirely plausible because, I think, Ms. Hoffman really cares about her characters and what happens to them. The reader will enjoy this story of a modern marriage, a young woman who is trapped by her fears, a high school girl that is at the heart of all the sin and passion of the story. This is a good story of myth, magic and reality

Rating: Summary: Starts off good, then goes downhill Review: I am a fan of most Alice Hoffman novels, but I was not thrilled with Illumination Night. The beginning of the story is good, but the middle and ending go downhill when dealing with Eddie, the giant. I do not think that a giant should have been written into this story. If Eddie had been a regular guy with a dark side, the story would not have been as bad, but the fact that he was a giant made me feel critical toward the storyline. However, it was not a horribly written book, and it was fairly quick to get through. It intertwines the lives of a wild teenager named Jody, who is caring for her grandmother on Martha's Vineyard, the family next door, and Eddie. I read the 1987 hardcover version.

Rating: Summary: sad and touching Review: I liked this book. I like all that I have read from Alice Hoffman. this book is a sad book and takes a twist that I did not expect. She adds a sense of fairy tale to what is a very real life situation. Its a quick read and I recommend it.
