Rating: Summary: An excellent book with "beware of whirlwind romances" theme! Review: A page turner that examines the relationsip of a well-to-do couple with a horrible secret - domestic abuse. The author skillfully shows how this whirlwind romance evolves into an abusive relationship. A must read, the author's best in my opinion. If you liked this book, also read Mary Higgins Clark - A Cry in the Night, it has a similar theme of a whirlwind romance with a seemingly prince charming that turns into a nightmare.
Rating: Summary: fairly realistic, but does the beauty always win... Review: An excellent novel that I very much enjoyed, but the ending did not agree with me. I don't understand what it is with authors like Belva Plain that feel that their novels always have to follow the same course: there's a bit of adversity, everyone feels sorry for the main character, they find true love in the end... blah, blah, blah. Life isn't always like that. Everything doesn't always end happily, look at ROMEO AND JULIET.
Rating: Summary: Whispers . . . Review: I found Whispers to be a wonderfully written book. This book shows that it's not the stereotypical poor women with drunk husbands who beat them. The couple in this book, the Fegusons, are a wealthy couple who are admired by many in their community. The husband, Robert is a possessive man who blames his wife for things that are out of her control. He expects Lynn to live by his rules. In this book it is evident that the children are affected by his cruelty as much as Lynn is. There are a few twists and turns in this book that keep it interesting. You are on the edge of your seat waiting for the next rampage to occur just to see if she will finally leave him. The ending is very interesting and suspenseful. A wonderful read!

Rating: Summary: I loved it very much, though I read it by chance Review: I happened to read this novel during a "Brush Up your English Language" course and I spent a whole weekend "eating" it. May be because it sounds real, everyday story, I don't know. What I do know is that I will recommend this book to my best friends. It is worth reading. Bye !

Rating: Summary: A GENTEEL DESCRIPTION OF A BRUTAL ISSUE Review: I loved this book. The characters were very believable. Robert Sr., the husband of the protagonist is a spouse batterer. He also verbally abuses their daughter because of her weight problem. The protagonist unfortunately and unwisely stays with this verbally, physically and mentally cruel man because she sees no other options for herself. The daughter wisely runs away after her father has belittled her one too many times. She travels out of state, which makes her a more affluent and resourceful runaway than many. I loved Bruce and despite what another reviewer has written, was glad the protagonist found a loving man instead of settling for that beast Robert, Sr. I was sorry she did not protect her children sooner and I also wish she had not named their son after his cruel father. I wouldn't have named a donkey after him! Belva Plain's books are a treat for me. Unlike another reviewer notes, I am glad she steers clear from tired, cliche bedroom scenes replete with graphic descriptions of physical intimacy. Hers is the gentle allusion to physical contact and her books are, in my estimation, entertaining, thought provoking and extremely well written.

Rating: Summary: MOst of it was predictable and I didn't like the ending. Review: I started out liking the book, but at about the middle, I was disappointed in it. I felt the husband really should have been given another chance, and I wanted them to go into counseling and stay together. I do believe he DID really love his Family, and it would have been much better to show the triumph of working it out in the end, and him overcoming his fear, and anger. I did not like Lynn ( the wife), and the fact she went with Bruce! Why must EVERY book have to mention SEX??? Can't we once read a moral book where people do not cheat on each other. Robert didn't cheat on Lynn. She abandonded HIM!! And that he was NEVER heard from again was a total disapointment to me! I sure didn't like the ending.
Rating: Summary: Reasonable light reading Review: Rather stodgy account of a battered wife and her struggles to come to terms with her situation. Predictable ending. Nevertheless, if you skip some of the tedious passages, a good story which compels you to read on andsee how it all actually turns out.
