Rating: Summary: sappy Review: This book was very flat. I can appreciate an older woman snagging herself a younger man, but I thought that the story line was weak. This is the second incredibly stupid novel that I read by Terry McMillan and I will never read another. I don't know how Waiting to Exhale could have been such a good movie, but I won't read the book to find out.
Rating: Summary: A nice book Review: I liked this book. It wasn't the best book by McMillan that I've read, but it wasn't all that bad. The run-on sentences in the book was what kind of turned me off to it. But it makes sense because Stella is a woman always on the run. I guess the sentences reflect her thoughts. To me, the book was about fantasies. Everybody has their fantasies, and going to Jamaica and snagging a man half your age can be one of them. It's just a great book to read at the beach while eating chocolate--pure entertainment.
Rating: Summary: You GO Girl ! Affirmative, Renewing and Powerful story Review: I read this back when it was first released by Ms.McMillian and had the pleasure of meeting my homegirl back in Detroit,MI. during her book tour. It's a moment I'll never forget. She's an awesome woman and a powerful writer. Terry takes you on a reading journey that's sure to leave an impression on you for days, weeks and years to come. I've been a fan of Terry's for years and eagerly await each of her novels. In this story Stella Payne is in search of a renewed life. She's a successful Black woman and a single mother of one. She's decided to take a trip to Jamaica to center herself and gain a new lease on life. However, when she meets a younger Jamaican born Winston Shakespeare her life will never be the same. She in for the ride of her life with a man who sees beyond their age difference. Winston shows her a new way of seeing life and it's possibilities. The love they share is AWESOME and HOT! This is a refreshing story about a younger man longing to love and be with Stella, who's an older woman. It a celebration of love. What I loved about the story and movie was the beauty shared by Stella and Winston. Their story shows that love can survive regardless of age. I also enjoyed it because so often we hear of older men with younger women and their stories run like a flood gate. How Stella Got Her Back lets us know that older women are glorious, beauitful and "ALL THAT." This story shows us that older women can be just as, if not more beauitful than their young counterparts. I applaud and celebrate these women for their true beauty and integrity. Thanks Terry for giving a voice to these women and men and their love.
Rating: Summary: first and last time I will read a book by this author Review: boring book, racial references were distracting, and they made this into a movie!!????
Rating: Summary: Romantic novels are not the forum for this author Review: Much like Waiting to Exhale, the story line was somewhat weak. The characters seemed were too perfect and mature. Obviously the author has done a lot of deep thinking about life and wants to express her conclusions. As such she conjures up these characters with so much maturity that they have no growing to do. Perhaps a fiction novel is the wrong forum for this author to express her views. On the other hand this story was a light pleasant read and a little inspiring.
Rating: Summary: Stella's groove's are very SHALLOW! Review: This book was so boring I had to force myself to finish it. The characters were shallow, the story...wait a minute, was there a story? The style of writing reminded me of grade school students in need of serious editing. My book club voted it 'best book NOT to finish!
Rating: Summary: pure sassy fun Review: I loved Waiting to Exhale -- this book is not as "deep" psychologically speaking, but it's a fun romp in Jamaica. No one gets inside the upper middle class black mind like MacMillan. She's not going for Shakespeare here, so give her a break -- this is a fun book to be enjoyed and savored. I think more readers should be happy that for once we have positive and strong black literary characters who are financial successes. I hope both black and white children will learn something from these books alone the lines of there are plenty of successful black women -- not all black people play basketball or deal drugs! The sexual plot is throughly enjoyable -- I think MacMillan must have had a ball writing this one. For an enjoyable read, pick it up!
Rating: Summary: Older women, younger men, Big deal... Review: again, the writing left much to be desired...i've seen the graduate, even dated older women...and i wonder, what's the big deal?...the last older woman i was with was 52, i was 31...she was a nice woman, but i always felt like i was with my mom...
Rating: Summary: A GREAT LOVE STORY Review: I THOUGHT THE BOOK WAS GREAT, BUT NOT AS GOOD AS WAITING TO EXHALE! PEOPLE WHO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH AGE DIFFERENCES IN A RELATIONSHIP SHOULD READ THIS LOVE STORY..
Rating: Summary: Superb! Review: I read this book in 1998 and have yet to put i down, i imagine i will read it about 30 more times before i put it on my book shelf. i was so caught up in the characters that i imagined that stella was myself. I would recommend this book to everyone!
