Rating: Summary: decent reading Review: The book was good. The ending wrapped up kind of quick and was a little unrealistic, but overall the story was well written. The prose is kind of like stream of consciousness. It takes a little getting used to. After awhile you feel like the character is really talking to you. It's good for any woman who has gone through a tranistion or made an assesment of their life. Stella goes and does what we all wish we had the guts to do sometimes.
Rating: Summary: Stella's voice stays with you longer than book does Review: While the book is quick summer reading, Stella's voice resonates in your head for days after reading it. I still find myself thinking thoughts in words and phrases that Stella would have used. While I did not like her character - who seemed insecured and angrier than needed - her way of speaking grew on me and I was enchanted by her run-on thoughts and streams of consciousness. Wonderful job, Terry!
Rating: Summary: Groovin' Review: This was not one of her best books. I definately liked the movie more than I did the book. When I first started reading it, that whole stream of consciousness thing got on my nerves. Then the way she constantly berated herself over and over and over and over and over (annoying, isn't it? That's how it was in the book)got on my nerves. Out of all of her books, I found this one the most difficult to read. However, it did have its moments. But as I said, the movie was better.
Rating: Summary: It's an ISLAND HOLIDAY!!! Review: Want a brief fantasy escape? That's my desription of this thoroughly enjoyable book. LOVE IT!!! If you are dreaming of an island getaway, but dont have the money or time to get away right now - here is your alternative. It's fun, light, dreamy and seductive. It's a blast! Thanks Terry! I am instant fan and have already raced to pick up her Day Late and a Dollar short! (Which I guess describes me for not getting to this great read earlier)
Rating: Summary: I NEED TO GET A GROOVE Review: This is the story of Stella Payne, a successful and stressed stockbroker who needs a break. She and her best friend take an island vacation where she becomes romantically linked to Winston, who just happens to be more than 20 years her junior. While Stella has her own doubts, friends and family continue to give a variety of unsolicited opinions. Joblessness and the loss of her best friend also play into the story line. This book is filled with the realities of success, comedy, sadness, grief and confusion. HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK is a good read, but not too deep. It's one of the few books where the movie was better.
Rating: Summary: Shallow Stella Review: This book is so tiresome, it will put the reader in a rut. Ms. McMillan is far more concerned with being a label snob and a preoccupation with materialism and brands, then she is with character development. The characters were BORING BORING BORING---even in their brand name clothes listening to Seal, etc. This book reads like a commercial. ----unfortunately it is much longer than a commercial!
Rating: Summary: decepcionante Review: HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK TERRY McMILLAN Esta novela esta escrita para salir del paso. Luis Mendez
Rating: Summary: A good escape! Review: Although I like the movie better, I enjoyed the book also. If you're looking for a thought provoking, insightful book, this probably isn't what you're looking for. But if you're looking for an escape, this is a decent choice. A good vacation book.
Rating: Summary: O.K. Book Review: It was O.K. They got points for the cover.
Rating: Summary: An ok Read an even Better Movie... Review: It's amazing that Angela Basset was cast in this role. I didn't picture as the main character of the story. I believe if the story was written with her in mind, the book would have been a more sensual and inviting read. The author's main character rambled a bit, and even though Jamaica was vivid...the pictures I had in my head when reading the book differed greatly from the movie. The movie (although a bit choppy) I would give 4 stars. The book gets an over generous 3 stars.
