Rating: Summary: Terry is the bomb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: This book, as all of Terry's books is real. You feel the characters.
Rating: Summary: Learn how Stella comes of age inspite of family objections Review: How Stella Got Her Groove Back is a coming of age novel that erases the lines of propriety drawn by families. This book is about knowing what is right for you and throwing aside the insane rules that society places on relationships. Fun, romantic, and poigniant. Stella will warm your heart and open your mind.
Rating: Summary: I thought it was great Review: I also broke the rules and fell in love with a younger man. It was like reading about myself and my sweetheart. I can relate to stella, I got my groove back much like she did. go girl.
Rating: Summary: a major disappointment Review: This book was an insult to Terri's readers. compared to her other works, this was trash. full of run on sentences and a shallow and predictible plot, it seems that McMillian was in this one for the $ more than for the story. just because something interesting happens in real life does not necessarily mean that it'll make an interesting story. this certainly didnt.
Rating: Summary: You go girl! I'm so very proud to be a black woman! Review: Words cannot express the way I feel about Terry McMillians book. When I first read her books, Disappearing Acts and Waiting to Exhale 10/93 in Brooklyn, New York, I thought she was the bomb then and I think she is the bomb now! You go girl!
Rating: Summary: Try again, Terry! Review: Up so far I have read all Terry McMillan books - and I liked them all. They were fresh and young, this one was a snore. It seemed McMillan does not really have to say anything and keeps on trying over hundreds of pages. Yes, it is okay for a woman to fall in love with a younger man - we all know this. Sometimes it feels as if the author tried to solve her own problems by boring the reader. The story is kind of flat. The reader does not find out what is so special about this young man, besides he is good in making love. McMillan has a tendency to write on love and sex that isn't entertaining anymore. If you should think about getting the book - buy it for vacation on the beach.
Rating: Summary: Once you get in Stella's groove, the book will grow on you. Review: "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" tells the story of a 42-year-old woman who falls in love with a 20-year-old Jamaican man. While not quite up to par with author Terry McMillan's previous work, "Waiting to Exhale", "Stella" still provides the perfect summer reading experience. It's lightweight entertainment, easily understandable, and lots of fun. When we first meet Stella, she is complaining about how much work she has been doing and how badly she needs a break. Yes, she wants to get her "groove" back, and all her complaining becomes......well, frankly, it's annoying. Stella rambles on for pages at a time (often incoherently) about her problems, and by about page 50, I was thinking about giving up on her completely. Thankfully, Stella goes to Jamaica and meets the aforementioned "younger man", named Winston Shakespeare. It is at this point that the novel begins to take off. We can practically feel the passion Stella feels for this "boy", and the descriptions of the Jamaican backdrop are so enticing that I wanted to pack my bags immediately. The novel continues, with Stella contemplating the logistics of her relationship with Winson, and although her he-loves-me-he-loves-me-not routine gets a little old, her emotions seem totally honest. On a side note, McMillan also does a wonderful job portraying the loving relationship between Stella and her son, Quincy. "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" is not a perfect novel. It's a bit too long, and some of the subplots could have been easily removed without changing the course of the story. Overall, I wanted "Stella" to be tighter and snappier. As it is, however, the novel is great entertainment without being deeply dramatic. Take this one to the beach...it's great reading for a summer's day!
Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC!! Review: I absolutely loved it!! I think that it took a lot of courage to use the particular writing style that she did. The fact that she used it quite successfully is a great accomplishment. I though "Stella" was well written and very tasteful. It proves that Terry McMillan is still one of the world's finest authors.
Rating: Summary: run-ons are a bit hard to follow... Review: I loved waiting to exhale. I LIKE How Stella Got Her Groove Back. The run-on sentences make it very poetic, in a sense, but a little hard to follow. I like her bold use of language and her honesty. I really enjoy how she ties in all of these time markers. For example, the music, news, and books, as well as the current fashions/styles, and of course the way we speak...
Rating: Summary: Don't knock it unless you've tried it! Review: I truly loved McMillan's book! As a fortish white female whose life has run parallel to the story depicted by McMillan, I found her book to be very enjoyable. The emotions, even though they may seem "shallow" to someone who has never had a similar experiance, were right on! I am still with my "Winston", proof that fairy tales do sometimes come true! Great book!
